I Like your confidence. I read the exact same thing and cant help think we will be blinking first.

And, to be honest, I hope we do if that's ultimately to be the case.

Hibberd is a bloody good player and pick 29 for him is hardly paying 'overs'.

He will add a lot to our list and I expect he will quite quickly become a required player for us.

I hope they just get the deal done - perhaps also insist on a later pick coming back as well and we can let Jason Taylor weave some magic with it.

Lloyd just said in trade radio the deal will get done today for this years 2nd rd pick...

Could just be Lloyd being an Essendon man saying what he wants to happen.

It's interesting because Damo is saying the opposite.

I heard that.

Maybe Mahoney, Taylor and co have a plan over the next 24 hours to trade back into the 2nd round some how, so maybe that's why we'd be willing to give it up.  Otherwise it may well just be a Essendon mouth piece thing which Lloyd most certainly is.

I reckon we may play Russian roulette and have him go into the PSD.

Put a price on his head and have him declare he refuses to move interstate.  Essendon wont re-draft him, and after that he will need to get past Brisbane, Fremantle, Gold Coast, Carlton, Richmond & Collingwood

He's contracted

I really hope we hold firm on this one... I really would hate to give in. Clearly we either have someone in mind in this years draft or another trade for this years pick lined up.

No reason they won't. They have some very good players back this year, and while they've been out for a year they will get an easy draw and could pinch 8th

Im not even sure this is possible but would we be able to offer a future 2nd round and a future 4th round? gives them 2 picks (because we should improve and 1 isnt enough) still allows us to keep this years pick.
follow up would people even want to do that?

Why? And cut off our nose despite our face? We actually want this player.

Essendon initially wanted more than a second rounder for Hibberd.

People seem now to be getting caught up in their (legitimate) hatred for Essendon and are losing sight of the fact that pick 29 for Hibberd is a fair deal.

Sure he's had a year out of the game, but, unlike O'Meara who's essentially had 2 years out, he's not been injured. O'Meara's commanding insane trade value.

Hibberd is a very, very good player and he'll be a great pick up for us. For pick 29.

Ron you disappoint me, the last thing I expect from you is to be the voice of reason, but I have to agree, get it done Dees.

There is also a chance that we knew we could always do the trade for this year's pick, and were just waiting until late in the period to do it in case a really interesting opportunity came up in the meantime.

They struggled to play finals before they were all suspended. And while some will get right back into it easily but some will probably take some time to get back to AFL level. I would think they have a chance in 2018 but not 2017

My take on it as well, Essendon are in no hurry either, we have till lunchtime tomorrow, only have to lodge papers if the deal is already agreed to, reckon like Ron it may be this years pick

So is a future 2nd Round Pick though, especially in what will be a stronger draft.

Oh its very clearly a fair deal as an isolated player for pick. But as a whole our trade period would look much better with Hibberd, Lewis, 29 and 57 than with Hibberd, Lewis and 57. But when push comes to shove an established player is better than a 29 lottery ticket. With over 24 hours left I would say we still have time to negotiate

Yeah, but we want their player. They therefore have the whip hand on this.

We need to get a 3rd club involved to keep our pick

Possibly, it might help but who?
Tis is the order as it sits around us.
27. Richmond
28. Collingwood
29. Melbourne
30. Port Adelaide
31. GWS
Richmond, Collingwood and Port all have no intention of drading away from this years draft if anything they want to trade up the draft and the new pick count rules messes with our chances to trade with the Giants for points

Ah, cheers for setting me straight.

If we use this years second rounder, that means we are out of the first and second rounds, which hurts our chances of picking a decent player that we may have had our eye on, who could be that Forward/Ruck type we have been after.

Just a thought

2017 second rounder and Dunn to colonwood

Colonwood 2nd rounder to ess

Pig to us.

That works (unless the Pies are desperate to stay in this years 2nd round...)

Posted

That's because we doubled up last year to get Oliver and Weideman.

I see Weideman's as our first rounder this year. Any idea what he'd go for if he was in this year's draft?

And, as an aside, we're stacked with high end young talent unlike several other clubs. We need to infuse some harder, more experienced bodies into the mix - hence our desire to get Lewis and Hibberd.

Sure it'd be nice to retain pick 29 this year, but I think recruiting Hibberd is more valuable to us - and I suspect the club thinks this as well. Relevantly, I strongly suspect Essendon knows we think this and that will ultimately be reflected in the trade that gets done.

Nah Pies need their picks for their 2 father sons they want to pick up...

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
