Alex Rance

Jon Ralph (who has connections with Richmond), mentioned this morning on SEN that there's starting to be some whispers about Alex Rance possibly wanting a trade. Said it would be a small chance of happening, but even so, if you're Josh Mahoney you're on the phone today to his manager surely.

How could we get him? I'm thinking next year's first rounder and maybe someone like ANB? Richmond need some young talent desperately. The other more controversial option of course is IF Hogan has told the club he wants a trade at the end of his contract then we ship him off to Freo for pick 3 and a player and then use that pick 3 to get Rance.

Thoughts?

I am just as happy to get Hurley and Hibberd (especially if we can swing something regarding their breach of contract with Essedrug). I am one who suspects that Hogan and TMac will both re-sign.

Hibberd and Rance are different types though, Rance is more the key position back we need.

Hurley I would love, but think it's about an equal chance as Rance and I rate Rance higher.

Would take Rance in a second. 2017 first rounder plus a player would be about par

My thoughts are that:

1) we might be able to secure Hurley for minimum expenditure (as an outcome of Essedrug);

2) l am hopeful that Hogan and TMac will both stay (meaning we won't secure a first round pick for them) and

3) we might need trade collateral to secure Prestia from the GCSuns ( as he couldn't possibly entertain RichmondFC after yesterday's performance)!

His 'defection' was discussed on KB's show a few weeks ago and KB conceded there was noise at Richmond re Rance wanting out.  Also, It was mentioned that his teammates are upset because he negotiated extended holiday period and would have a later start to the preseason.  Unhappy teammates is what happens when clubs give a player special treatment (eg GCS and Ablett, WB and Boyd).

To me Rance is a 'prima donna'.  We have one as our key forward we don't need one as our key back.

Future 1st round + Salem.

They wouldn't take someone like ANB. To get someone as good as Rance, we have to give up for what he is worth. I would hate to part with Salem, but I think a deal like this would get it over the line and beneficial for us in the long run.

All good points mate. I just think Hurley is most likely to re-sign, hence why I think both he and Rance are the same chance of leaving.

I've thought all year both TMac and Hogan would stay, but as the year has gone on I've become a lot less confident about it. Would love both to stay ideally, but just talking about options at this stage should they ask to leave.

Prestia would be great, really rate him, but if it came down to choosing between a gun mid and a gun key defender this year, I'd take the defender.

Yeah thought it may be a stretch, was just thinking of a young talented mid I guess and probably still consider Salem a HB.

To me Rance is a 'prima donna'---  I think we already have our fair share of these

He's also an All-Australian. We don't have any of those.

Stuie, I was not contemplating Prestia over Rance, just suggesting that we play the trades so that we get a good key defender and can get Prestia as well (especially as I suspect that the odds on him going to Richmond have now somewhat lengthened)!

Rance coming to Melbourne might set his conscience at ease after thumping Watts in the back of the head.

He's already made noise about retiring from footy altogether. Too fickle for me, although would improve us massively in a heart beat. In a perfect world he was committed to playing out a full career, I'd have no hesitation handing over a Salem type plus a pick. None whatsoever.

Gee that would be a dream! Not sure we have the trade currency though. How could we get both done?

We will in 5 weeks... but a ruck, not a key back

Unless that player was a Hogan, Brayshaw, Viney calibre player, we'd be getting away with murder with that sort of deal. 2017 1st rd + a player like ANB won't cut it

What about a Kent or similar. Would hate to give up Salem, he is just the sort of class we need

I don't think we'd be wanting to mess around with contracted players. Salem will be a gun and has been extremely unlucky with injury in the last 18 months.

He's the best KPD defender in the league and the Tiges would want a truckload for him

Would be seriously mad not to consider Rance.

One of the best defenders in the game right now. Love watching him play in full flight.

I heard that on KBs show too and if teammates are upset about it, they are kidding themselves.  He has (with Dusty) been their best performer this year by so far that he can decide to come back whenever he likes!!  It's not compromised his performance so what's the issue?  It's the other spuds on that team that should be taking a good look at themselves.

And whilst I wouldn't be surprised if Rance left, I just can't see him wanting to come to us.  He'll want someone who can contend right now - I reckon it will be the Eagles or nowhere.

The Eagles can barely content with us.

We could contend if we had a player like him

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
