6 Watts (I have to say it was his most complete game yet. Smart with his disposal as always but finally looks aware of his ability and now plays accordingly. He won't ever win the tackle count, but he now contests)

5 Hunt (You had to be there to appreciate what this guy did. His goal reminded me of KB and his defensive work was a bit like Sean Wight.)

4 Jones (A few errors but kept working and easily had Scott Thompson's measure before a reliable last term in defence).

3 Jetta (Clean as ever and when on Betts was the most likely to beat him. But he spent much of the day on Cameron - who is seriously quick)

2 Harmes (Really seemed to enjoy his new role down back and being such a lovely kick helps. Can see him becoming a permanent fixture in the backline).

I had a lot of difficulty finding the sixth best because the above were our only four quarter players, but after much prognostication went for:

1 Garlett (Along with Stretch, he really seemed on his game in the first half and was a major factor in us being two goals up at the main break. Faded after that).

That is huge praise for a young kid who some wanted to delist

Well done

Seems like our two stars today (Hunt and Watts) and our disappointment (Dawes) all graduated from the Robert Shaw / BGS Football Academy. (Salem is our other Academy graduate.)

BGS has had a great senior football team for a few years now.

They've won the  APS championship two years in a row.

They certainly punch well above their weight for (I think) the smallest school in the AFS.

Not certain but I think Shaw came after Dawes and possibly Watts

Forgot to get mine in....don't know if it counts but anyway

6. Watts - Easily our best. Is this his first undisputed BOG for the Demons? Arguably now the best utility in the AFL. Never thought i would see him playing at this level. Ben Ken get out of his road bro, that was probably another goal coming up! Biggest yardage gained for us for the match.

5. Hunt - Gave us the spark and space as well as some fantastic pressure acts and intercepts. Also saw him at and under the contest a number of times. The desperation is there, the run is amazing, the read is improving and he is now starting to finish off his good early work a little better. Quick learner!

4. N Jones - Jonesy still needs to work on his passes i50 as he missed a few easy and obvious ones, but overall that was a solid game from our Captain. He was in everything and had to compete against Thompson most of the day which is no mean feat. Had the better of him IMO.

3. Harmes - A four quarter effort. Lacks a little polish at times but cleaned up alot of ugly fumbles and solid work rate saw him on the receiving end of much of the good work inside from the likes of Jones and Viney. 2nd biggest yardage gained for us. Nice.

2. Kent - what a fantastic 3 quarters providing the outside link man and also some fantastic pressure acts in the first half. Went missing in the last for all but the last 5 minutes and tried to take a few too many on on one or two occasions. If only he had a right side!

1. Garlett - Welcome back mate! Jeffy at his best.

apologies to the Hulk (those handballs wow!), Tyson (sloppy at times), Nev and Viney (who got better as the game went on after a forgettable first quarter).

Might as well just scratch them off the score then eh?

Both free kicks were definitely there and genuinely inhibited him from contesting.  You couldn't be sure they wouldn't have been goals anyway had he not been illegally blocked.

Hogan waved his arms around at every opportunity to get free kicks. He dropped at least 4 marks on the lead within 40 metres of goal (criminal). He was beaten by Hartigan on the day.

His lazy clanger kick across goal to Gawn leading to an Adelaide goal was a shocker.

Hogan is the future of MFC but Sunday was not performance of the player we are hoping for.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
