I'm 29 so in terms of what I saw of him with his involvement in football it's confined to coaching at the Sydney Swans. What I know or feel about him is that his legacy transcends clubs and relationships.

He's a football legend, and I'm glad he's wearing Red and Blue.

I've been reading the book Time and Space which goes through the evolution of the game/tactics etc Fair to say he didn't "invent" the Ruck Rover position but he did perfect.

Interesting to note in the early days there were usually two rucks with one acting as a "blocker" for his partner. Also interestingly from the late 20's for about 15 years they had a "last touch" rule with a free kick given against the team who last touched the footy if it went out if bounds  (similar to what the afl want to bring in now).

Cheers everyone. I'm in the youngish brigade also and strangely never knew much about RDB until prompted by this thread to get on a do a little research. It was if I just accepted his legend status and uncontroversial playing record as all I really needed to know. Anyways, love the extremely direct lineage of some of our club champions. Smith mentoring Barassi as if family and Barass bringing us Stynes.

And if you really want to stretch things, Barassi coaching Roos at Sydney for one season.
