Strong and rarely loses a contest when the ball hits the ground. We're a better side with him in it.

I think in Dunn's case he can. Maybe not in that instance though. One criticism I have of Dunn is that he's too willing to put the ball over the boundary line when he could otherwise win a 50/50 ball.

Easy to say when you are sitting in the stands with a nice vantage point. On the ground it is less certain. An d you can't hear your teamates because of the surrounding noise. Happy for a stoppage when uncertain about what is around. Cut these guys some slack. They are like bomb defusers. One wrong move and bang a goal is scored.

Put what value you wish on stats but here are a few for what it is worth  :

League (averages) rankings:

5th in rebound 50s

8th in  one percenters  --  often an unnoticed stat

8th in effective disposal %  (90%)

Can't believe this is even a thread.  We are immeasurably better with Lynden in the side.  He is one of four elite kicks in the team (Vince, Jones, Salem).  Is there a stat for one on one contests?  He'd kill it.  I asked Andy Mac if it came out why he was left out from the initial teams but didn't see a response.  I hope there was a seriously good reason because we were noticeably poorer without him, particularly against Essendon.  Switch footy is such an important facet of the a fast offensive game.  Well, he's the best switcher in our back half....can hit a target at 65m consistently.  How many others in the AFL can do that?

I assume you have elite and super elite categories and have Watts as the sole MFC player in the super elite category. So far the best kick in the team its not funny.

I have Wattsy as an elite finisher / set shot but not always an elite field kick under pressure eg Hobart.  Lynden and the others are very composed when the heat's on.

None of the players you have listed are always elite under pressure, no player is. For example Salem shanked the ball a number of times under pressure in that Roos game.

Watts is the best kick in our team, both under pressure and when shooting for goal. No one else i rather have the ball in at a vital moment in a match.

He is technically the best kick and weights the ball to leading players better than anyone in the team and as good as anyone in the league.

Well, Wattsy goes at 78.4% (including his set shots), Dunn goes at 90.9. Jones at 70.5, Salem at 75 and Vince at 66.7.    Always good to throw out the ABC (assertion based conversation) but to state that Watts is indisputably the best kick in the team doesn't withstand scrutiny of the stats and probably not the subjective aspects either....

What's Jetta go at?

Towards the end of the game on Sunday I realised I actually like him, and my feelings about Dunn have been unsteady for many years.  Starting him on the sidelines this season might have been a mistake but it's probably made him hungrier than ever. They may not be the cleanest duo but a defence with T-Mac and Dunn is definitely a solid one

These stats are a nonsense as so much of disposal efficiency depends on where and how you play.

Jones and Vince play inside games - so their D/E would always be a little lower than Dunn for example who gets his D/E number up as the backline switches and chips and that is an easy kick.

Watts has definitely improved his contested ball which would lower his D/E as he is kicking more balls with heat on.

To me you should judge disposal efficiency with your eyes rather than stats - Watts is a great kick as is Dunn and Salem. Jones has become much more reliable over the journey and Vince is also good by foot ( with the very rare fluff).

To back up this argument you only need to look at Tom McDonalds D/E of 81% and tell me who you would prefer to have disposing the ball  - McDonald or Watts ?

SO if we all know Dunn is good why the hell didn't the club play him?

Watts the story behind that decision? He wasnt injured (not listed) didnt play at Casey. Was is some kind of discipline action for breaking some rule? very very interesting

I'm not convinced. Old-style full back, stuck in a rapidly evolving game. Game gone past him?

Um.  no.

Will all be replaced at end of year by Wagner, %wise                                                        perhaps.

I've never been a big fan of Dunn but I can clearly see the value he is adding to the team and to our defence.

There's no obvious replacement for him on the list but even if there was I'd be picking Dunn over him right now.

I've never liked his faux aggression but he's reduced that. I also didn't like how often he called for the ball in poor positions on the weekend, but that got better as the game went on (as did the rest of the team's decision making).

I like statistics as evidence to back up a point but DE is a meaningless waste of space.

It was a big mistake not include him against essendon.

...presuming that he was fit to play.

We never really heard why he missed the preseason and rounds 1 & 2, did we?

Rank him 7th in our best up to Rnd 5 (weighted stat averages). Best  averages ranking of all defenders. Last game was a gem. Keeper. Next victim? ^_^

Yeh, on reflection you're probably right. It's the whole ensemble, the vibe.
