Some fence they erected around the MCG in an overreaction to terrorism.

 

The fence itself had nothing to do with slowing people's entry. It was the lack of gates and lack of staff available to wand people. 

If they are still wanding people the busy gates will still be very slow moving. 

Personally I liked the thinking behind moving security away from the entries. It saved lives in Paris and it alone doesn't increase the invasiveness of the security. But the temporary fencing was a terrible eyesore and not well planned. 

Time will tell, I really hope it's always something we won't have to worry about.

Though it was a thread about Sidebottom re-signing......

Sadly , it is something we need to worry about. We are in a very different world where public spaces are potential targets. We have to live with it and keep doing the things we like doing and that includes going to the footy at the MCG.

I agree Hemingway. Change your way of life and you have given them what they want. 

I'm living and working in Beijing at the moment and here bags are scanned when you enter the subway and water bottles are tested to make sure you're not carrying volatile liquids. Occasionally you will be physically frisked as you enter. Around some areas in central Beijing there are often machine-gun toting soldiers so a fence at the G is not too much to complain about. 

Can't wait for next weekend. I've got my AFL Global Pass so I can watch every game live. I've also found a bar called Paddy O'Shea's that serves great beers and sensational French fries and screens AFL on the big screen. Won't be the same as being at the G but it will have to do.

Calling it a "ring of steel" flatters chain link fences.

The terrorists must be having a huge laugh at the west....billions of dollars, millions of man hours annually into "fighting / preventing / detecting terrorism" at events, at airports etc.. yet if they are determined / sneaky / innovative enough they will inevitably carry out another successful attack somewhere.  A win - win for them. A big loss for our freedom of movement.  ??☹️

And it isn't like a temporary fence would have stopped anyone if they wanted into the G anyway.

Reminiscent of Moonshadow when it's time to shout. Like a fish.

The irony of course being that when the 'ring of steel' was first implemented (for the boxing day test) it caused a massive cue and backlog of thousands of people.  Lumping a massive crowd of people together pressed up against a fence is kinda what a terrorist is looking for.
