Jake Spencer's foot injury?

Maybe I've missed something but can someone enlighten me as to what is happening with Jake Spencer? Hurt his foot at the intra club game and hasn't been sighted since. At training ATM and pretty much a full turnout other than him. Would be a concern if Gawn goes down and Jake is a long way off.

Dave Misson on 10/3 said Jake was running well and doing stuff on the treadmill and they would just monitor him for a week or so. Not verbatim but that was the gist of it. Hopefully he will be fit and firing all season and gets to play alongside Max a few times like he did at Geelong. Fingers crossed that he has a break out year.

He has Plantar Fascitis  which is not an easy thing to get over especially if you are an athlete. Joel Selwood at Geelong did not train for 8 weeks last year.

I have heard nothing since the match he pulled out of but would not be surprised if he is out for sometime.

Thanks for that. It's a worry that we didn't really  recruit a back up/3rd ruckman in the off season. Frost/Pedersen/Dawes can all pinch hit but we'll get mauled over an extended period. Fingers crossed that Maxy maintains his form and fitness.

If he has plantar fascitis I suspect that he will be able to play whenever needed if Gawn goes down but they are resting him now to try and get over it before the season starts.

Having had it a few years ago, it is the type of injury that causes pain in the morning,  When you stop for a break and horribly after the game but once you are warmed up and going you can play through it.

At AFL level that may be difficult for a sustained period of time but it is possible. It is a strange injury, excruciatingly painful and you can't weight bear at times but somehow you can play through it. However recovery is a long process involving staying off your feet or worse

I'm looking at the positives. A lot of time in the ruck at Casey for Max King. If (and it's a decent sized if) his own body can hold up to senior VFL footy then his match fitness and development should get a good kick along.

It is a shame the Spencil is out but he's a pretty tough character, if we need him hopefully he's rested up enough that he can front up and play. I think that would be a situation where we'd play both Pedo and Frost as well and use a lot of 3rd man ups. Get creative with Frost playing as an extra on baller in a lot of ways.

Maybe it's time our on ballers learned to rove to the opposition ruckman, it seems at times that the opposition have no problem taking the ball away when Max is rucking. Hit outs to advantage last week were well in favour of the opposing ruckman last week

so you think we should ruck aaron pederson,  & place Gawn in the forward pocket most game ;)stretch put their defence on the rack,  as it were

than our sharks could shred the opp's ruckwork.

Aaron Pederson is an A grade ruckman.

Max King is capable of playing in the ruck and indeed, he played there on Saturday at Casey without setting the house on fire. It was my understanding that he was being groomed to play as a key forward so if he's ever called upon to take the first ruckman's position, it would be a stop gap measure at best.

Let's hope Max Gawn stays healthy and Jake Spencer makes a speedy recovery.

No. but just because you don't have a dominant ruckman all day is not the end of the world, where Max is great is his ability to gather the ball on the ground and take a pack mark, but ruckwork at times gets over rated.

Sorry

he is hugely important to our chances. Not for some years have we had on ballers getting a clean run at the ball due to adroit palming

Unskilled ruckwork is overrated.  You may as well have a journeyman as a defensive ruck & rove to the opposition.

Clark Keating is one of the most effective rucks I've seen used in big games.  His damage was done crashing & bashing thru the opponents,  palming the ball,  & taking heavy marks around the ground.  An aggressive ruck.  He is exactly what we need in the pocket.

Yes as we saw at Geeling, they do work well together, and it also allows us to have another strong marking forward to help Jesse when Max rests up forward. There were also occasions last year when Jake showed considerable agility around the ground for a big man which was good to see. I think having Max AND Jake in the same team considerably strengthens it in many areas, particularly now there are limited rotations.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
