Pick 26 was pretty good for Jack Viney.

I see similar in Kalani to Jack, in so far as he has grown up loving the club, wants it to succeed and being mentored by one of it's greats. I know Taylor and Co do highly value attitude over talent and I think Kalani has alot going for him in this respects.

Similarly, I don't think we should undervalue father son players being invested in the club, as opposed to being just the first team that drafted them out of the U18s.

The draft can be something of a lottery anyway.

The whole qld academy access for father sons is an absolute farce. Just reading luke Hodge's kid is part of Brisbane lions academy. Can't imagine hime going anywhere other than Hawthorn, just like Kalani shouldn't be anywhere else but the dees.

Thought the academies were about growing the game to people and areas that aren't traditional... as opposed to hoarding players that are destined regardless

Father/Sons and Academy players are all romantic but in an equalised competition with 30 players picked before you get to Round 2 of the draft it's now ridiculous.

Collingwood have three top 3 picks and Brisbane two. In the absence of these rules Brisbane's first pick would have been much much lower

Father-son is pot luck, we'll get our chance at some point. White may make it in the end but I think it's fair to say he's not going to be a game changer for us given his output in the unders right now.

in fairness, when he was selected max gawn was yet to be the cultural and game-changing force that he's been for over a decade now

give kalani time to grow into his body i reckon

Kalani White may take 2-3 years to fully mature but he has footy IQ and natural ability on his side, he will develop quickly once in the DNA and standing 200cm with a great spring could play fwd/ back or ruck.

Gawn had injuries galore in his under 18's year which is why he went as late as he did so it's a very different scenario.

As I've said, I'm not writing White off as a player in general. What I am writing off is that he will be the game changing top pick we all had hoped. I mean he's potentially going to be taken in the fourth round at this point. And this is after a full year of 18's without injury, the advantage that comes with being part of an academy and having a father who played AFL.
