It's not a sport. It's a vehicle for gambling. The horse results should be in the comics section of the paper next to the Keno and Tattslotto results.

One of the biggest employers of labour in the country. Try riding a half ton beast at speed and see just how fit you have to be. This is as much a sport as anything we have in this country. It has created legends and stars and it's part of our folklore and history.

Of course, you don't have to like it and you are entitled to your opinion, but to say the thoroughbred industry is not a sport is simply ludicrous.

Stephen J Peake is a lawyer?????

Mind boggling.

Did he get his education as an articled clerk to Dennis Denuto maybe? Or that guy on the Simpsons.

he sure is...

Bloke wants to be The incarnation of ""Uncle" Doug Elliot.

I am waiting for him to expode on air mid rant.

His defence of Essendrug and Hird since 2013 is just incredible

I understand all that. And I am not advocating the end of the racing industry.

But ...

If there was no betting on horses, the racing industry would cease to exist.

It is a vehicle for gambling.

Gambling will exist no matter what the endeavour. There have been far greater match fixing episodes in what one may term mainstream sports, where people have gone to gaol as a result.

I can't stand this station. Not so much for the presenters, well a lot of them I can't stand actually but Andrew Gaze is probably the worst. How someone can trade on this lovable goofball schtick that he constantly puts out is beyond me. Very irritating.

But the real problem is the gambling advertising and innuendo. It is so pervasive that you don't realise how much they do it. If you are a gambling addict, recovering or on the precipice this station is very bad for your situation. Save nothing for the amount of ads in general but the gambling stuff is really bad.

Which is a shame because during footy season it is a great source of information - I guess I'm glad for stereo controls on the steering wheel so I can mute it or switch back to 774 or PBS!

It is a total turn off for me too - so much so that I switch stations immediately it comes on, either to ABC or AW or basically anything else, sometimes iPod (same as I do whenever that tiles man comes on whichever station).

I seriously find the all pervasive gambling advertising a total blight on the AFL - you get it at the game and on TV.

It is turning me off watching footy altogether. I rarely now watch entire 'neutral games', in part because of this barrage, or if MFC is getting a drubbing (all a part of history now of course)!

Interesting that the Ox copes. Good on him for overcoming that terrible curse.

would not call it barbaric either..

Forcing a horse to run a set distance with a whip will always be barbaric to me.

Jockey's who eat mostly air for food to be under wieght is just sick.

But each to their own

Online Gambling will bring down many people who will then turn to crime

The Underworld loves it...

So Healthcare is the largest employer in this country, I wouldn't consider that a sport.

As a wise man once said, "when the jockey carries the horse round the track is the day I'll call it a sport".

I rarely listen in the evenings but on the odd occasion I have, that Mark Fine has done his nut at some caller who dared question him.

Absolutely tears strips off them. The guy's odd.

As far as the others:

Andrew Gaze = Bill Brownless

Andrew Maher = Sounds like Julia Gillard with a deep voice.

Kevin Bartlett = Stubborn old coot

Mark Allen = So easy to wind up. Light weight

Don't mind Harford and Francis Leach will be great. Unfortunately he'll be dumbing it down for the audience again.

3.00 - 7 PM - Daniel Harford and Mark Allen ( Harford new this segment and Allen current )

Andrew Gaze will remain as a contributor on Basketball.

And another thing

Listen hard for KB's loose fitting dentures..... sounds like he has a lolly in his mouth all the time.

Once you hear them you can never 'unhear them' ...annoys me to hell

Enjoy OX, though how he tolerates the gambling ads and 'infomercial chat' about the the odds i don't know

Dont mind Viney (Its Finey 'axxx-wipe!) !... Angry fella isn't he

Francis Leach is clever and pulls out good original stories sometimes, doesn't just read the paper

A selective and spurious quote, which takes the my argument totally out of context. I have had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with many who are hands on in the industry. You will not want to meet a more genuine set of people who love their jobs, their horses and the people they work with. Throw stones from the outside, but until you experience the true thrill of thoroughbred racing, you just will never understand.

They can be as nice as they like and I'm sure many of them are. I've ridden horses for years and love it as a past time.

...but the thoroughbred industry is an agricultural business not a sport. You could argue that the jockey's are sportspeople, but the rest has nil to do with sport.

Motor racing is probably similar, you could argue the drivers are sportspeople but the rest of the industry is part of the car or auto industry and really nil to do with sport...

They may train horses or build racing cars but it's Keith Richards that's the musician (arguable in some peoples eyes) not Leo Fender...

The only animals I can think of in such a business are generally slaughtered to put food on our tables. Another spurious analogy.

Not at all, some are bred for food others for wool.

You really should not bring slaughter into the conversation, we don't need to get into this.

The thoroughbred industry is part of the wider agricultural industry is it not?

Not from my experience. Sheep for wool, lambs for Sunday roasts. Of course, you have Alpacas and Llamas, but they are a very small niche agricultural business.

The day reporting on horse racing includes things like race times, splits, records and the like rather than "payouts" is when I'll believe that anyone really believes its a sport.

You think these breeders & trainers are sports people, I don't so lets leave it at that.

...back to SEN, I'm missing Rita

She's a pain in the backside but at least she brings a different point of view and a bit of colour.

You must be reading the wrong publications. There is plenty of that info around if you look for it.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
