NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS 3 & 7

Featured Replies

We obviously have someone targeted for pick 3...

Maybe Robbo's little video with Parish was a trial run for Dee TV

With 3 and 10 I'd assuming we'd be thinking about Parish, Curnow, and Weiderman. Assuming that us and Essendon will knock out GWS' 7 and 8, that leaves GC with 6 (Francis), Adelaide 9 (Mileria).

All depends on what happens with Ess 4 and 5. We might have the choice of Curnow and Weiderman at 10.

The others around there are Tucker, Balic, Matherson, with an outside chance of McKay coming up to 10. He is only a few days from being in the 2017 draft. So for a key forward thats a good sign.

This has surely all come about as a result of being unable to attract the 'A' grade midfielder? So we have to develop our own but I plead ignorance in regard to how we'll now use those picks in a "shallow" draft?

Very good trade for us!

It's amazing that we don't leak at all!

So much Josh Mahoney bashing this week too...

Terrible deal. How the [censored] do we expect to get Prestia now!?!?!?

Thats what I thought

great trade, who knows yet who might get the edge in this one, but thank you Gold Coast for possibly a win/win and being a decent club to trade with in contrast to some others

Thats what I thought

Don't think GC would accept 2017 first rounder + 2016 2nd rounder.

I guess we'll worry about that next year.

Could we still trade pick 10 or nah?

We could trade our 2017 first round pick for him. Or trade in another 1st rounder and on-trade it to GCS. I'm sure the club knows what it's doing.

Hogan for presita straight swap?

Note; A future 1st round selection. I presume that could be pick 18 which we could trade for if we don't earn it.

Well done Mahoney and the MFC

There had a few cracks at Dion maybe there sick of it and are moving on they know best

On future picks, does anyone else find it strange, not only that the AFL has introduced this situation, but several clubs have already taken to it? How can you deal for something unknown? How can we allow an element of pure gambling into the system? Bloody hell we better not be regretting this one year from now... on the other hand, if we finish in the bottom 4 again we might as well close up shop anyway so why not go 'all in'

This years draft has now become slightly more interesting.

I like it. Makes finishing higher next season even more important now. Imagine if we finished last and meant we were coughing up pick 1, but obviously, hopefully, that won't happen.

Exactly.

Trading picks is about leveraging on a position you expect. We obviously think the corner will be turned.

What i like about this deal is that is shows we had a backup plan in case the Howe deal with GC fell through. We are obviously keen on no. 3 and we got it.

BTW, if you are one of the many who have prattled on about what we did and failed to do and how Mahoney sucks and how you are a better negotiator and waawaawaa... this would be a good time to stick your hand up and admit you don't know WTF you're talking about

Anyone still think we got screwed on Howe? We plugged pick 29 directly in to a trade we were going to use Howe in. That was his market value.

Anyone also still care that we used 25 instead of 29 for Melksham?

Anyone still reckon they'd do a better job than the amateurs at the club at the moment?

I'm feeling so smug right now. Hehe.

me too mate

Regardless of how this deal works out - I'm happy that we got it done despite Howe's flip flop.

Obviously targeting high selections this year.

My concern is around the talk of how weak this year's draft is...

Is the weakness in terms of talent or depth?

As in - good talent high in the draft which then tapers off more rapidly than previous years?

We might not be finished yet. That p10 could attract another player eg Aish with other picks thrown around. Opens up numerous scenarios.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?

After kicking the first goal of the match the Demons were always playing catch up against the Saints in Alice Spring and could never make the most of their inside 50 entries to wrestle back the lead.
