I guess one of the outcomes of Sunday is that us long suffering Demon supporters dare to dream. I think it is very interesting the media reaction to the win on Sunday which has been universally positive - seen almost as a "turning point" or "a line in the sand". Whatever, most commentators seem to see it as much more than simply another victory.,

I guess as much as anything it was the way we won, and the emergence of exciting new talent who showed their wares (Brayshaw, Stretch, Neal Bullen) and the not-so-new who are showing up as major talents at last (Watts, Gawn, and the return to form of Tyson). Add to this the addition of the wunderkind Hogan, and the yet to appear Pettracca (supposedly better than Brayshaw which I find difficult to believe), the recent resigning of Jack Trengove (who must have a positive medical outlook or he wouldn't have been resigned - we must all remember his first and second years, he was seen much as Brayshaw is now, an outstanding talent, and someone who would emerge into one of our top half dozen players), and the return of proven performers like Garland and Grimes, and emerging talents like Vandenberg and Salem. Add to this the vast improvement of players like McDonald, Viney, Vince, and even veterans like Dunn, and the consistency and brilliance of Captain Courageous Jones, we have a lot to be excited about.

In effect, by next year, we have four "new" top ten picks to come into the side from Sunday (Petracca, Hogan, Salem, Trengove). But I think in the long term, the most significant performance to emerge from Sunday, and the most promising from our ability to become a top 4 side, is Maxy Gawn's breakout game. It is something a lot of us thought Max had the capability to do, but the fact he did it in such a dominant way, not only in the ruck, but also around the ground and his dominant marking, makes him a player of a level of importance akin to Jeff White in Neil Daniher sides of the early 2000's. It was an awesome performance, and one which will make a number of sides cringe in fear. Max after all is the second biggest player in the AFL playing in the seniors, and on Sunday's performance one of the most dominant.

Paul Roos has set us up wonderfully for the next ten years. Let's all enjoy the ride.

Matt Spangher is a premiership player, and Kyle Cheney would have been if the timing had been slightly different. It's hard to imagine either of them getting a game (or a spot on the list) with us, either.

That's the way footy, and the draft, works. There's not enough a-grade players to fill every list. Every list has some NQRs. I'll grant you that we have a few more than is ideal, but we'll never be "NQR free". No-one ever is.

Ummm nuttin to do with picks, but I hope the Dees dont expect to many from my home town of Myrtleford.

Melbourne players were in town today ( capt jones ,brayshaw,to name a few ) out of roughly 200 kids only one came out when jones called for demon kids to come forward, the one boy was my great grand child and he got a photo with jones ,hey one excited young lad and loves his footy. We are watching ch7 local to see him with jones.

Sundays game was amazing. But our list still has enormous development in front of it

What sunday will do hopefully is make the fringe players like Matt Jones keep cracking in

You can have a fantastic 22 and [censored] all depth - as soon as a few injuries come along (and they will) your team isn't looking so good anymore.

I do not understand this obsession with recruiting another tall forward. We have hogan, Dawes, as well as the rucks/forwards Gawn and spencer. We cannot fit in all of these. In addition we have Fitzpatrick, King, and Pederson. I would have thought tall forwards are the least of our problem

Worried about Michie. Seems to be going backwards and from all accounts is very introverted. He may be struggling with confidence and it's hard to see where any improvement will come from.

Hope he makes it but I have my doubts.

I agree with the possible exception of Dawes, but all teams have second and third tier players. The point I was making is that we are better of than many of us think and have the basis of a very competitive, extremely talented young team. This does not mean though it cannot be improved by further recruiting.

For me though, what the Roos era has shown is that we have a lot of under developed talent on our list, a lot of then high draft picks, who given time and great mentoring and coaching, will allow them to develop. We have a great base. We need to nurture it, not go for magic solutions.

Riley, although has started sub, shows the traits Roosy loves - he always cracks in. He only had the three touches in the last qtr, but they were all effective from memory. One that is definitely a depth player going fwd. Hopefully has a good 2nd half of year if gets his opportunity.

Spangher is in a very different category than Cheney (or our own Steve Armstrong who is a fortuitous WCE Premiership player). Spangler was very unlucky not to be a three club Premiership player: IIRC he was emergency in both Swans and WCE flag teams.

Other than that - yes, every list has some NQRs. It is called depth.
