Shite thread. Well done Picket

As picket fences are generally white, I take offence at this.

And...down the rabbit hole we go.

I suspect neither you nor Dunstall have been subject to systematic racism throughout your whole life.

It's no coincidence that it's always the white, heterosexual males who say things like this

Such a generalisation!

We get a bad rap from the self hating Matt Damon types.

To be honest, I don't carry any white male guilt.

I dont hate Goodes either.

Just his stupid little teeth.

I'm also tired of "awareness raising campaigns" and tokenistic media glibness.

I'm over minority causes and pressure groups yet i despise the mainstream.

I watch porn from all over the world , except India, where they can't even hold a camera steady despite having the biggest film industry globally.

all of them? no

most of them? no

some of them? yes

How would you know?

You have been chiding other posters for aligning the booing with racism but you would seem to know no more than them to make an assessment,

Interesting

Read all my responses above and after, which are to other people. I'm not going to restate them just for you because you are too lazy to read my posts in the thread.

I'm sick of being labelled a racist because I don't like Adam Goodes. It's reverse racism in my opinion, of the people labelling me as such.

You're not and that not what racism is about.

Ok Moony, he is a great of the game, but that doesn't give him a free pass to be aggressive and inconsiderate to opposition supporters.

Right...

Reverse racism does not exist. Unless you can go back and magically halt Europe from colonising black and brown countries and change institutions and governments that have privileged white people for hundreds of years.

Besides this, everybody has a right to dislike Adam Goodes AS A PERSON.

Pretty handy having courts to air grievances, the rule of law, sewerage and water systems, built roads and a system

of government.

Despite this, the white convicts who built Tasmania and NSW probably never thanked the Brits .

Yet some are slaves to the idea that whitey started destroying the native populations of the world.

There are plenty of arrogant players who do thuggish things and stage for free kicks. Why is it that they don't get booed as much?

I haven't followed the Goodes stuff that closely, but who was it that first asserted the booing was race-related and what was the rationale? Unless it is well-founded, I fear there is an element of racism from the person claiming it. Ie. "Adam Goodes is indigenous, thus he is 'different', thus the crowd must have interpreted him as different, hence the booing". It is bizarre logic that I can't believe has gained traction in 2015.

If, say, 5000 Hawks supporters were booing him, maybe 50-100 neanderthals might have been doing so with a racially motivated bent. It's not acceptable, but not illustrative of everyone's motivation. I recall booing him a decade or more ago after he destroyed a Melbourne player from behind in a marking contest in a very poor act. I'd like to think booing is directed due to on-field behaviour but I guess there is no code of conduct for this.

As for tonight, I'll wait to see what comes out in the interview wash-up. Indigenous war dance in indigenous round - classic, go for it. Directing aggressive behaviour towards opposing fans just invites abuse though, and I would expect that if someone does that, they would anticipate and enjoy to an extent the vitriol that comes their way afterwards. Again, I'll wait for the wash-up. Who knows what's been said over the other side of the fence prior to it.

There is zero doubt that it is racist. Zero.

"Unless it is well-founded" are you kidding? Think of the decades of research abotu bias, unconscious bias, racism and Australia. you are aware of this literature, aren't you? Because, it would be pretty daft to be talking about a subject in an unfounded way, wouldn't it? I'd be concerned about your thinking on this issue were you to be speaking from an - dare Ai say it - ignorant position.

The "it can't be and if you think so, maybe you are" argument is, well, it is the equivalent of "I know you are, I said you are, but what am I?" My god. That sort of dodgy rhetoric is best left out, don't you think?

And the war dance! Darling, sweetheart. Seriously. Who cares about a war dance. It is a dance FFS. A dance, from a man regularly racially abused, on the round that celebrates his race - a race that has been pushed into what will probably be a fatal decline. And we are a bit sensitive about hurt feelings of the crowd? Precious much? Maybe missing the point just a little?

Lewis is a sniper but doesn't get booed.

Fletcher is a spiteful jerk, but doesn't get booed.

Selwood plays for frees constantly but doesn't get booed.

Lindsay Thomas dives and gets booed. Whoops.

There is no doubt this is about race, fueled by race, denied because of race and bubbling along because of race. Just got to get big enough to admit it.

Come on Song, that's just not true. So I guess calling Goodes a monkey or King Kong isn't racist? Regardless of what people think of the incident with the 13 yr old girl, the boos are definitely related to that. Or should he just suck it up and accept the racist insults, like generations of Indigenous footballers?

So mooney why dont other indiginious players get booed as AG does

Posted

I think Goodes hears boos mostly because he seems like a shite bloke.

I think any sort of racism is abhorrent, but I truly do think Goodes looked like King Kong on the poster, in a way that I don't think all indigenous people do.

Just like I don't think all white people look like John Candy.

But some do.

Eddie is a twit for saying it though.

I wouldn't boo Goodes, because it's not my thing, but I don't like him, because he's racially divisive. Launching into commentary on "our very dark past" and other divisive remarks designed to colour our history as poorly as possible, while being feted as Australian of the year was self-serving, horribly opportunistic and ill-considered. It was all designed to taint our past. Rather than uniting Australians and embracing togetherness, he used his role to continue the divide.

I also loathed how he publicly humiliated a 13 year old girl. The girl saw a huge man with a beard running towards her and called him an "ape". Later she said she didn't even know who he was or that he was aboriginal. She just reacted to his appearance. Why are people so quick to condemn a 13 year old girl or eagerly dismiss her protestations of innocence ? I find it quite plausible that she wasn't making a racist remark. And who am I to disbelieve her ?

And when Goodes made his public "stand" against the girl he knew exactly how old she was - "Racism has a face - and it was a 13 year-old girl". Disgraceful.

If you read Henrietta Lumbago's post it's because he doesn't "blend in", which is the same line of logic Allan McAllistar used when president of Coll before Eddie took over. If you don't know of this incident it's worth checking out. Frightening stuff.

Adam Goodes is a huge role model for indigenous players, he stands up for indigenous issues and calls racism and bigotry for what they are, probably more than any aboriginal player who has played. He is proud of his race and is the face of indigenous australian sports. He's also widely respected amongst the afl community, hence he is the chairman of the AFLPA. Sure he has been known to stage for a few frees, like many, many players (Brad Green anyone?) but they don't get booed remotely the same amount. He's also arguably in the top 10 players to have played in the last 20 years, with 2 brownlows, AAs, premierships, B&Fs, etc. Champion player for sure.

I think the core of why Goodes gets booed is because he's a vocal, proud and well spoken Aboriginal man who has a large profile. Many see this as arrogance, other just as him standing up for himself and his people, especially given it's Indigenous Round.

I also think there are a large number of 'sheep' who boo at the ground because others are booing and it's now a trend at Sydney games. Dumb supporters. Stick a cute kitten on the field, get someone to start booing and they'd probably join in for the hell of it.

Perhaps because they don't take such a public stand on the issue of racism.

As for the 13 year old girl incident, I'm surprised how confident some are that AG could tell her exact age in the circumstances and then condemn him. If I have a quick look at a crowd I doubt if I would be able to judge age well - and I'm not exhausted from running around, getting bumped and haven't been abused.

You want boos -I'd have the "lads" stomp the kitten, just like they do foxes.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
