My point was it is very easy to be carried away with good performances from a young player, a point I think I exemplified by mentioning Gysberts. He averaged around 20 possessions per game in his first season. Good judges nominated him twice for the rising star.

I rate Hogan, he could be anything, John Coleman, David Schwartz, Paul Salmon, Alan Jackovich, Max Bailey, Luke Molan if you get my drift.

The Lockett and Dunstall comparisons are clearly tongue in cheek.

Anyway, each to their own. I don't feel the need to keep a lid on it in this case, the guy has all the attributes to be a genuine star of the comp and I think he will be.

Some of us were desperate to get Hogan in the 2012 Mini Draft and have been entirely unsurprised by his showing at Casey in 2013 and AFL performances to date. Others, perhaps like yourself, are still coming to grips with the talent before you. I just smile.

I think he's great, and will get better. I suppose I am gun shy after Scully, Blease, Trengrove, Watts, Gysberts, Cook, must I go on.

I hope he is a star and plays a long and successful career for us. I am seeing what you are seeing and I'm excited, but i'm trying to keep a lid on it.

Don't think anyone would - but the reality is of course that he would never accept such a deal. So much can change in the course of a decade, who knows what shape our club will be in ten years from now, we certainly don't have the runs on the board to project any type of stability, let alone chance of on-field success. Additionally, it may well be the case that 5 years from now, the elite players of the comp will be commanding far more than $1M per year, in which case he will be short-changing himself considerably.

Is it possible for AFL players to put a team performance clause in their long term contract I.e. after 4 years must be playing finals etc? I know it can be done on other sports such as F1.

Although could be seen as the player holding the club to ransom and might not be popular with the other players...

Club needs to create a culture of long term players.. Though the current free agency has changed the rules.. I think if you commit to long term with kpp you develop a strong spine which you can build a great club ....

With the advent of free agency, list management is coming into a new age. I wonder how certain clubs will deal with it.

The thing to consider is this club doesn't have a heap of credibility, i know that's harsh but we've had so many false dawns where people have thought we've been on the way up and it just hasn't happened,

i know for a fact Jesse loves the club but he isn't going to sign a massive long term deal, it's our job to convince him before the end of 2017 that we're on the way up and it's not all just talk, if we can do that he'll recommit, if not i think we can probably guess what's going to happen.

I love my job - but I'm not going to sign a 10 year deal to stay here.

I'm still going to work hard, enjoy it, perform well, and who knows, maybe I will stay here ten years!

But I'm happy to just keep working like I'm working, and talk contracts when its time to talk contracts.

He's already extended his contract once, let him play football for a while.

Doggies forked out $1M per year for Boyd and on current projections Hogan will be a better player.

Please don't berate me about how early it is in their careers either. It's the closest thing to apples we can compare against.

Yes but Boyd's contract goes until 2021, a 10-year contract for Hogan would mean it lasts until 2027 which is a huge difference in terms of the amount of forseeable change to the landscape. Just sayin.

Cancel the current contract and offer him 7 on big $ from next year and take him through to 2022 by which time he'll have multiple premiership medals.

The facts are that Hogan has asserted his dominance for 6 games straight when you could almost excuse a young key forward to have one or two unsighted games in there. Has fought hard and found a way to get involved. I'm confident he's gonna be a really good player, barring injury

And this is without the one or two easy goals per game which most big forwards get given by their midfield, Hogan would be getting some big numbers if he was playing with Freo's midfield.

We average 40 inside 50's a game compare to the good teams who are getting around 60 inside 50's.

Clearly we need a better midfield and the game plan needs to be more direct.

31 inside 50's against Sydney just shows how bad we actually were.
