One of the papers suggested that there were issues mid year and were working with him.

What's the link ?

Hogan has the chance to be the difference.  He knows it, the players know it and the coaches know it.  I suspect he's the type of character to see what this evolving group can deliver.  Will he take ownership and responsibility for what he can contribute ?  Champions usually want to put the team on their back and show the way.

If Hogan goes post a premiership so be it, but for him to leave before the club has made significant inroads it would be a disaster, because he's the type of player that will help make us a destination club.  But I suspect he'll stay.

And if he ever does leave I think he'll remain in Melbourne, which is why I'm confident he won't.

I agree. I think he's firmly within the talented younger core of this club all of whom I reckon have made an informal pact to stick together and seek to achieve ultimate success together.

They know it's in their hands: the club finally has the coaching, recruiting and development staff, the infrastructure, the back office, the financial resources etc to enable this to happen. In short, the MFC is as good a vehicle as any other club right now. Much is in their hands, as a group and individually.

And I don't really fear losing Hogan to Freo. He seems to like living in Melbourne. The threat of Hawthorn or Collingwood concerns me more, but this threat will be minimised if the team starts to perform as we hope it will.

It's a great story for this group if they can take this former basket case of a club to a flag. Hogan would be spearheading that charge - not a situation/narrative easily replicated elsewhere.

So you just remember reading it somewhere at some stage through the year?  From whom, was it GWS saying it or a jerno assuming it Robbo style and after the fact?

Anyway, my fears still stand, the players have all the power.

It was the paper quoting GWS. Call it what you like but there is something definitely "fragile" about McCarthy. Compare him to Trengove. Injured for the best part of two years, almost shipped off to Richmond. Does nothing but knuckles down and gives it his best shot at making it back.

I do agree that players have more power than they have ever had but not all - if you are a free agent then definitely, Not that I like the game of "Chicken" but with Hogan, if he wanted to leave and go to Freo - either Freo would have to meet our demands or Hogan can agree to our terms or if there is a complete impasse and he wants out and we want play ball he would have to take pot luck in the draft ( although we are disadvantaged by this). It is a rarity that players sit out because they didn't get to their destination of choice. However it is now a rarity that if players truly wants our that the trade is not done.

The players that don't have power are the fringe dwellers - Ro Bail - thanks for your efforts - contract expired - see ya !

I still think he is being a little brat.

Agree with the fringe players point.

If it did happen (and FWIW I think he'll stay a Dee) I'd be gutted, might even throw a few tantrums, however I'd never stop watching AFL. It is quite funny though, last season I found myself saying "I cant wait to watch Hogan this weekend", instead of "I can't wait to watch the Dee's this weekend."

I know what you mean Ethan. I appreciate that Hogan is a very different case but I used to feel the same about Jurrah's 36 appearances in the red and blue, the Wiz at the height of his powers, the shooting star that was Allen Jakovich and the head-banded Ox.

They were all players that had more talent than any one else on the field and there was an anticipation as to what they would do next.

Not in the same class is Jeff Garlett but, for me, there is that anticipation when he is near the ball. i love the Hogan/Garlett combination

I love the anticipation of Jeffy running full tilt inside 50 and wondering if he's going to (a) shank one sideways to Hoges unexpectedly or (b) kick a goal or (c) miss. We're definitely improving, so many options!

I'm the same. I am fully invested in all our players but with the understanding that it is now "here today, gone tomorrow".

I love Mick Malthouse for giving him to us for free (sorry, I realise this is a Jesse thread).

The moment they found out Howe broke his hand playing frisbee with his dog......

Glad that pic came up the day after I said Jesse would be a  1 club player

Thats the smile of a man that just signed a long term deal :pj::roos:

it would also mount a case for hawks - or any destination/powerhouse club - to poach him on massive dollars too.

Franchise tag would only apply to the players current club. A franchised player could not be poached by another club in FA.

Yep sign here for a 1 year deal, and here's next year's contract for you to sign as well as our 'Franchise' player for stupid money that will last a lifetime, by which time we will have signed the one after you...... easy to get around that type of rule

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
