Instructive about where the Club's at now compared to the past.

PJ came in and his first comment was what a lack of experience there was in all areas of the Club. Neeld put together a bunch of raw coaches many of whom hadn't even been in the AFL system. That means in turn none of them had a broad network of contacts. PJ brings in Roosy, he has a massive network of contacts himself. He brings in experienced people around him, including George Stone who's been around as long as anyone and obviously has a huge network of contacts that stretches to this scenario. Those contacts contact George, he tells the Club, the rest is history.

Another example is Dane Rampe at the Swans. Couldn't get picked in any Junior NSW Rep teams, went to Melbourne played with Williamstown, Dogs said they liked him but didnt' pick him. Went back to Sydney, gave up on the dream, played at UNSW. Roosy's son was playing in the same team, he sees him, tells the Swans and bingo they get another unbelievable recruit because of the network.

Clubs like the Hawks have these networks and have been using them for years. We are just starting to get ours and its starting to reap rewards already.

This is a really good point 'It's Time', and one I hadn't considered. The network of contacts is so important and expands the resources of the club.

One of the recruits of the year (league-wide). Just a mean looking player that bulldozes his way through the opposition. Not the most skilled player out there but doesn't need to be.

An absolute machine.

Thought pre game who was going to stand up and fill in Tysons class and smarts around the ball.

Well Vanders put his hand up and blew me away.

The beast

Imagine another pre season into this guy and what he could become....

Love him. The pressure he brings is already so important for us. He's a real barometer.

His best games this year, we win. Spot on.

vandenFyfe.

Can we not call him VandenFyfe. His name is VandenBerg.

Why do we feel the need to slap on the name of a player who has absolutely Jack [censored] to do with the dees.

Give the guy some respect

Can we call the Freo guy Fyfeberg?

This coming from the same bloke that disrespected the whole footy club by saying we should apply for a priority pick??

Let's not put limits on skill level. Am happy with him, but he certainly has deficiencies in speed and skill that will be worked on. One of Melbourne's recruits of the year, but not league wide. Perspective please.

always derailing. This thread is about VandenBerg, not PP mate.

Actually it's vandenBerg.

Who has provided better 'bang for their buck' than vandenBerg across the league then? There probably are some, but I said he was 'one of' the best.

Dennis Cometti was marveling at him all game and I'd like to think he's seen a few players come and go over the years.

He's like a high possession Max Rooke. You'd love to play next to him. I wouldn't mind Riley on the other side of me either.

Remind me - who is the recruiting guy who discovered this gem? He deserves huge accolades.

Were you there today? I believe my eyes at the G rather than a tv commentator. Like Vanders a lot, good pick up, but he has speed and skill issues that he will work on. If you cannot acknowledge that then you need to take off your rose coloured glasses.

PS. perhaps time to change your profile name....

I like the sound of this kid.

it seems today he had a good one, getting the best Fantasy footy stats in the team.

29 disposals, 4 marks, & 11 tackles... now that's more like it Dees

go Aaron Vandenborg

Does he have speed issues? I'm pretty sure I read over the pre-season he is in the top 3 over 20m at the club.

I live overseas, would love to have been there. I have acknowledged that vandenBerg isn't the most skilled player already. Hasn't stopped him being one of the recruits of the year.

So is Jack Watts.....

There are no speed issues.

What I really look forward to is seeing this guy after he's had a real pre-season. Remember that he came to us recovering from surgery and didn't do a full load for a fair bit of the pre-season this time around. He can get bigger, stronger and faster.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • PREGAME: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
