Think he's trying to put himself in the positive books, not going to say anything else really. Would be better if he just shut his mouth and let his footy do the talking, in which case there would be silence.

And two of the best smothers I can remember seeing, both of which led to critical goals. In his first game!!

Doesn't ball watch does he? For the excellent Newton goal (hasn't he started well too?) Vanders saw the bloke get in the motion of a kick and 'bee lined' over and took advantage of a dumb footy play by the GC defender.

vandenBerg always seems to get his arms free in the tackle and gives off cleanly and his 'cut' inside Saad and kick to Garlett for Jeffy's first goal was a thing of beauty.

I also loved when he decked the living shlt out of Rischitelli in the centre square.

That hit on Rischitelli showed the sort of intent that we have been lacking for a decade. There are plenty of big bodied midfielders going around but plenty of them actually don't throw their weight around. Vanders showed he is completely comfortable with the physicality of the AFL game immediately along with the ability to take an overhead mark and decent foot skills. I think he should play most/all games for us this year as he can set the tone for us physically in the middle at times. Jones is hard as anyone but he gets himself hurt more than hurting others while Viney is a beast but not many are going to be intimidated by him. Vanders gives us a more unique mix through the middle along with Gartlett and Lamumba providing the speed.

know its been said before but i loved vanders and newtons game. incredible first up games. no nerves and both so good around the ball. great intensity and hardness. goes back to the northey years when we showed that hardness and take no prisoners attitude. great recruiting nous.

rpfc are you surprised he's achieved what he has to date? He looks very comfortable at the pace. If he can develop his tank he could be damaging.

What sort of mid was he in Canberra? Inside? Outside? Who would you compare him to in AFL? Did he have a history of kicking goals and if so from general play, crumbs or marks.

He's been very impressive to date and coming off a limited preseason it's amazing.

He just ended Rohan Bails career.

Good one Dazzle. That pleases you does it? Could also ended Matt Jones as well. How about Michie or Riley?

For heavens sake, can't we just enjoy the success of the weekend without having to dance on the grave of a player who gave his all, received lots of concussion as a result but just didn't have the skill set to really make it?

You can be a jerk sometimes.

No it doesn't please me. But its the truth.

That half forward role that Bail has been playing has now been taken by Vandenberg. He made such a big contribution in that one game more then Bail in his whole career. I like Bail but if you cant see that he is finished your delusional.

Mate, put your brain in gear. It's not that what you said was wrong, it's just that it was such a crap thing to say. And you've followed it up in your last post champ with "he made such a big contribution in that one game more then (sic) Bail in his whole career".

The ignore function works really well EXCEPT when you respond to his posts and it comes up in my feed. :(

I think he'll play quite a few as well but with limited pre-season training at AFL intensity I'd expect him to get quite a few rests as well.

I certainly hope they don't give him a spell this week... apart from what he brings to the game in terms of skill and hardness, it would be great for him to get to play in front of his "home" crowd.

Yeah, it wasn't really a smother I guess. But as you say, it showed how completely comfortable he is with the physical stuff, because he chose exactly the right thing to do. He didn't try to tackle him, or to knock the ball away, which would have been ineffective. Didn't hit him too high or too low, and didn't overcook it and risk a free. Just hit him hard enough to knock him right off balance, and the ball just dropped so that he could pick it up uncontested.

Speaking of Magner what an absolute [censored] that bloke is.

If anyone have read his recent HS article you will know why.

If CAS get a shot at Essendon, Magner may well get another run, more strategy than anything else from James. Or I'm just in a good mood today and feeling lenient.

Is he still on a rookie wage? Is it like $920,000p.a less than the one with the fat dad? Bargain

It does please you, it pleases me too. Team first, feelings second. You are a [censored], I'm a bltch, we are ruthless in our want for team success. Don't let the moral/PC brigade bring you down, you're better than that!

yea I agree I guess. This is Roos challenge this year. How many games does he have Vanders, Brayshaw, Newton and Toumpas play if they all keep their form and how many of those games are as sub. It's important that they all get used to being able to play 4 quarters of AFL footy. A mate who plays in the league spoke to me of how most players will actually lose some fitness during the season due to the extreme nature of preseason now. The amount of running they do significantly decreases during the season and the very best they can hope to is maintain current levels. I'd love to see Vanders play as much as possible though as he gives our side another element which isn't probably replaced by any player on our list who didn't play on Saturday. I hope he is only rested 2/3 weeks throughout the season and made sub rather than play at Casey/rested so we can get about 18 games into him.

Put your football hat for a second and tell where else you can see Bail play other then half forward... that half forward was his role last year and Vanders has that role stiched up already.
