MFC injury list - 2015

There's no official list yet but it seems that it's possible to compile a rough injury list as follows:-

Jack Trengove (navicular) - indefinite

Christian Petracca (ACL) - indefinite

Alex Neal-Bullen (knee) ?

Bernie Vince (hamstring) ?

Jeremy Howe (hamstring) ?

Angus Brayshaw (concussion) - 1 week ?

Max King (?) ?

Some others like Jack Watts and Aaron Vandenberg are just coming out of rehab.

If you have reliable information on the above or any others I might have missed out on, please provide it here.

You have covered all I know about, apart from Mitch White (toe) and Jayden Hunt (back) both still on restricted, although joining in more drills

Not sure what the issue is with King, will endeavour to find out, if he is doing off legs, he must be on a restricted program

For Vince and Howe, I would start at 3 weeks maybe

Neal -Bullen another 2 weeks or so, he is still straight line running, he will need to get confidence in the knee

I'd also be curious to know who the club consider as having not completed a "full pre-season" as I am always surprised to hear how many players are retrospectively referred to as having not done a pre-season 12 months down the track. By the training reports it sounds like nearly all the players are participating most sessions in some form, however many on restrictive programs for various reasons.

All the first year kids regardless of injury. Trengove obviously. Watts. Vince. King.

They are the obvious ones. I think Howe did enough prior to injury to say he's done a preseason and I think Terlich and Spencer were back running and then training early enough.

There are probably others besides the new guys, Dean Kent might be one, who can lay claim to improvement with another good full preseason, as those above (Howe, Terlich, Spencer) might be able to. But it's not a reason to blame poor form.

I can understand players being keen to improve at the end of a year and saying things like 'I want to attack pre-season in order to be fitter and improve', but I don't want to here about guys not performing due to lack of preseason. If they haven't done the work then get them out of games and in to a month long training block then put them back in!

I'd also be curious to know who the club consider as having not completed a "full pre-season"

In an interview with Roos, there was a number put on the sessions a little while back to "qualify", thought it was something like 25.

Yes I recall him saying this. Would that mean in Roos eyes someone like Watts could be considered as having done a quality pre season even though he has rarely been in the main group?

MELBOURNE

Chris Dawes Suspended Round 2, premiership season

Jeremy Howe Hamstring 3-4 weeks

Alex Neal-Bullen Knee 4-6 weeks

Christian Petracca Knee Season

Jack Trengove Foot Indefinite

Bernie Vince Hamstring 3-4 weeks

Jack Trengove is already as far as i'm aware out of a moon boot, so in theory should be running a little ways down the track, i personally don't think they will risk him this year, even if he is right, but is there any chance he could reach the point of having ticked most of the boxes of being available to play before the year is out?

So Howe did his hammy on Jan 21 and is still 3-4 weeks away.

I count that as a 9 week hammy. Must have been on the very serious end.

I guess there's a chance he might be back for the Essendon game on mar 22.

I have a feeling Vince won't be playing in round 1.

there's a whole book of tickets, don't worry about that ;)

TDI, is Howe further advanced than Vince in his hamstring recovery?

It's looking like 9 weeks on the sidelines for Howe which is incredibly long for a hamstring injury I would've thought.

I saw him doing laps at training like 3 weeks ago and he looked absolutely fine to me

Talk about being ultra-cautious..

I guess that all clubs are trying to get a full list available for Round 1.....which is still 5 weeks away....and will build their players up to get to that point

I actually trust the medical dept these days

Howie is champing at the bit, he was very descriptive at the Intra Club when I asked him how frustrating it was, club is being ultra cautious with every injury they have, and so they should be, if everything goes to plan and we have a bit of luck, we will have 2 players out, which isn't good, it's excellent

Agree, good position to be at start of season. Much rather the club be cautious at this stage so that players do not carry niggles, soreness into season proper. With the pressure on to play I always prefer to see the club allow a player more time rather than less. We do have greater depth this year so if we start winning some games early that takes the pressure off injured players.

As a matter of interest who are the medicos? Not talking Misson or physios but real dinky die doctors.

Couldn't name them, which is a surprise for me, think they are listed on club website, apart from the physios, there is normally at least one medico at training

thanks TDI just looked at the website ..quite an eye opener.we have 4 medicos headed up by a sports physician, dr paul blackman from olympic park sports medicine, a club doctor, a match day doctor and a VFL doctor. compared to the past that is impressive, we also have 2 physios including the well regarded gary nicholls. back in the northey days we did have the highly regarded dr peter brukner from olympic park sports medicine and also dr andrew daff.

after a period when we looked light on in this department we now look to have a solid group of medicos who presumably will engage in peer group reviews of player injuries and rehab. when you look at the support staff listed it is another example that at least on paper we have a super professional football dept.

I'm guessing that most of those with a question mark didn't really need a rest this weekend which suggests that the mystery injury of the week thread will be busy again this year.

White's coming back from his toe injury still. Not injured, but not ready to play a practice match when the combo of rest and rehab is better for him. Same goes for Terlich and Riley, both were running extra after training the other day. I'm not sure on Hunt and King but they both missed a lot of time last year as well and King's missed training time this year. Building their bodies maybe more important than early season games, or maybe they just weren't picked to give more Casey guys a run.

Either way it's 3 weeks until round 1 and these guys don't seem to be in contention, it's also a month or so until the VFL serious matches start. For their own sake I hope Terlich and Riley are declared fully fit and can start playing practice matches, but I don't think it's a conspiracy.

  • GAMEDAY: Hawthorn

It’s game day and the Demons are chasing a fourth straight win as we take on the high flying Hawks at the G. After decades of being tormented by the Hawks the Dees will be keen to extend their 7 year dominance over Hawthorn.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
