2015 Contracts Thread

Pretty good summation. My question marks would be:

Garland - As a RFA, if there's interest from other clubs, there's no way he'd accept a 1 year deal. I hope he goes.

Riley/Michie - Both play a similar role so I'd only re-sign 1 of them, and retain M. Jones.

Hunt - Worth another year of development, and a preferable option than pick 65/85.

Our record of trading for fringe players from other clubs (Riley, Michie, Newton) hasn't borne any fruit to date, though I've still got hopes for Newton. Conversely, our rookie list selections over the past 2 years have been more promising, so we may go down this path.

how can you say/know it hasn't born any fruit??? just because those players haven't burnt the Elliot grandstand down, doesn't mean they're inclusion hasn't aided the club.

and Pedo has helped us as well. just as our fringe players have aided other clubs. depth & change are both worth their while.

Terlich (paid out), Bail. Riley and McKenzie are the players out in the first 'rinse' as i see it.

Jamar, Howe and Dawes are three players who are also potential movers for various reasons. Howe is lining up to be the overrated exiting Demon of 2015, in the proud Johnstone/Scully/Sylvia/Frawley tradition.

So I'm anticipating 6 players out, which is enough for one off-season with an allegedly weak draft. That gives Grimes and Garland one more year to heal their scars, or at worst be depth behind Salem and Junior.

Hopefully this all translates into 4 draft picks (including one boosted by the Howe trade) and 2 free agents coming in.

That's where things really get complex.

Heal their scars....?

Roos

Goodwin

McCartney

Elite Management (or whatever they are bloody called)

Bonding sessions

Statement games

Lines in the sand

It's over, time to move on. The longer we carry these types the longer we serve up crap like yesterday.

The players don't want to make a statement, so hopefully the coaches do. I want big names on the trade table, as I've mentioned earlier wouldn't be too fussed on what we get its all about freeing up cap space.

Article in todays HUN about Melbourne trying to recruit Tom Lynch.

Further in it says Melbourne is adamant it will not over pay Howe.

List Chief Todd Viney said the club " cannot be foolish about how we spend our money"

"we need to be really disciplined the way we manage our list , so Jeremy is an important player for us, but within the constraints of the model we have got " Viney said.

" We will pay him what we think he is worth and hopefully he is going to be happy with that along with ( how) all the Geelong and Hawthorn players have done".

If there was any doubt Howe will not be at the MFC next year that settles it for me.

I read between the lines that Howe wants more than the MFC thinks he is worth.

Big signal to the fans IMO from Viney and the club.

I agree and I am glad. Howe is average at best.

Have we forgotten Trengove nearly out the door to Richmond last year. That caught everyone off guard, we approached Prestia and got knocked back now we've approached Lynch. The coaches aren't stupid, they are trying(unlike half the players) but we're competing with 17 other clubs.

Open Spots - PL: 0 RL: 1

* = Require confirmation...

Those underlined are player I think are the top 11 paid players; RFA is determined by players being among these 11 (obviously this will be wrong but hopefully indicative).

Ages are from the 1st April 2015 - an arbitrary date fit for a fool...

And so it begins...

Cross retirement updated.

I would say from the uncontracted list

Jamar, McKenzie, Howe, Bail, Riley, Howe will be gone by end of trading week. It wouldn't surprise me to see Garland go as well, Hunt might get a rookie downgrade replaced by Harmes. King and White get another year

I think Fitzpatrick gets another year only because we really don't have many true tall players as back up keys.

8 off senior list 2 rookie upgrades, 6 spots to fill plus a rookie. 3-4 at draft day 2-3 through trade week

Can people in the know post details of player contracts - I will edit the OP.

Retire -

Jamar

Cross

Delist/payout -

Bail

Riley

Terlich

McKenzie

Trade - (don't be fussy just get it done, the first 4 are forever stained whilst at this club)

Howe

Garland

Watts

Grimes

Dawes (would love him gone but think he'll survive)

Toumpas (one year under Neeld was not his undoing, put him up and see if there's any interest)

Give Michie one year(I think 11/12 is the max). All going well Michie/Newton/M Jones will play most of next year at Casey and be off the list in twelve months.

For those that would say your keeping Michie over Toumpas, when we're done with Michie its over for him. If we keep Toump next year and he still gets his game high 7 touches we get nothing for him as well. This year we might get something. Will Toumpas come good....who bloody knows. A full year under McCartney and he's gone backwards if anything.

3 years I have been doing this kind of Contracts thread and never been pinned, Mono tries it once and it's pinned...

If 'Mono' agrees we should close this thread.

Then the mods can pin your excellent, longstanding thread ;)

I'm sorta with rpfc pb this. His thread has been a gold mine and he updates regularly with references!

OK with me. I seem to remember a pinned thread in years passed, didn't see one this year, so I acted.

Happy to have rpfc own it.

I did ask for it to be pinned....maybe that was the trick.

Stay tuned.

Sounds like Crossy will take a few weeks to let the dust settle before deciding on whether to continue at the MFC under a new role. Really hope we sold him the opportunity to stick around with our victory today. The group clearly love him to bits.

I did mention it a few years ago.

And it's all good - I was just going for a laugh and to use that GIF - Jubal Early in the last ep of Firefly - great show.

Pinned.

Ah, pressure is on now (hyperventilating).

I really just took 'offence' so I could use the GIF, I swear...

The GIF!!

The end of next year hopefully marks the end of the dead wood.

Any chance Nasher/WJ of pinning this thread? As we enter the back half of the season I think this will be in high demand.

Cheers.

I asked a while back....

One of my favourite threads.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
