I don't think I quite emphasised the score of what I meant. I wasn't only talking current scenario.

The AFL have saved us when in dire straights through cash and through personnel support.

Im saying, that I the scenario Essendon loses players have massive legal fall out etc the AFL needs to either choose to save Essendon or take the license off them.

If it is not financially to save them the drop feeding and supporting should be off the table. Pull the plug and be done with it.

essendon is but one club. 17 other clubs whose members tally in the 100's of thousands might not/probably dont see it as a natural reflex that this bunch of crooks ought to be spared.

They have only sanctioned the EFC for governance breaches, not for anything else I think.

There is no way WADA would allow such a sweetheart deal. I agree the AFL tribunal may try it on, but there are other forces at work here. Oh yes, and open cheque books have their limits, even in the face of this sort of stupidity

I don't understand where the sweetheart deal is in my hypothesized scenario. The penalty i set out is in line with the WADA penelaites. The only wrinkle is whether WADA would accept the duped argument and halve the penalty. The backdating ASADA have already said is a possible (ie to the time of issuing of notices in November last year). The EFC losing 17 of its (best) players for a full season is huge so it would satisfy WADA and ASADA i would expect (but not the Hird media club). The players will be furious but will accept it to get it over and done with.

OD the sanctions to date refer to bringing the game into disrepute. If they are found guilty of systemic PED cheating you can be sure there is more pain to come.

Its not a given that the AFL will materialise as have total mastery of even their own destiny from amongst all of this.

this is Brave new world for not just our domestic code but for team sport globally. Might be a bit more at stake here than some suggest.

The logical alternate therefore is there are none.

Given the players ( WADA ,Work Cover, other ) and the Pandoras Box it would breach should there be no more sanctions/penalties I cant see how there can be none.

I don't see any clamour from people both football followers and others for the EFC to be further sanctioned. My experience is most people's eyes glace over when I raise the subject.

Most people will be happy with the players being given some sort of sanction.

They just want it over so the teams can get back to playing.

I don't agree they will halve the penalty. I think they will serve the full two years, and i seem to remember the ASADA offer of backdated penalties was made before Hird, Little and Essendon tied up the whole process in the courts challenging ASADA's methods and its association with the AFL. This will not be viewed kindly by ASADA and WADA. I seem to remember when ASADA was asked recently about backdating penalties for Essendon they pointedly refused to answer.

I believe the least penalties ASADA/WADA will accept are two year bans dated from the day the penalties are announced, and if it covers more than two players (more than likely), then Essendon may also find themselves banned for a time. Then let the writs fly.

So any ban the players serve, does that include training as well? That's basically career over for anyone 25 and over you would think. Sue for lost wages for time of suspension, future lost earnings, pain and suffering, what are we looking at- ballpark figure? 2-5 mill a head? 60 mill plus?

To me the most interesting aspect about this entire saga is the assumption that the AFL has its own best interest at heart and not that of the players.

That we, the football-going public, believe this to be true is a real indictment of our game. We know the AFL will attempt to back-room deal and politic its way out of this mess.

And we have good reason for believing this to be true.

The fact that WADA and CAS have the final say is good, but the way the AFL conducts business is simply appalling and honestly I think it's a larger threat to the game than the doping scandal itself.

I will take your bet but first we have to agree on what "more pain for the EFC" is?
