Would a 4 + 1 deal with triggers to guarantee the 5th year be suitable?

Whatever he wants should be what suits! He's earnt it, showed his loyal, if the club stiffs him I'm going with. I'll be barracking for whoever jones plays for in 2016

So if he asked for $1.5mill for 5 years you'd agree? (Not that he's asking for that)

Sure he's earned a significant pay increase and a long term contract, but the view of giving him anything he wants is not realistic.

4 + 1 with triggers and incentives for the 5th year may appeal to him. I don't know if that has been offered or likely to be. I too want him to stay.

No one is saying he isn't loyal or doesn't deserve a good deal or that the club is going to stiff him, but you may need to reassess some priorities if your support depends on one player.

A deal similar to what Clark was on seems around the mark to me

If he wants $3.5M over 5 years

Just front end it and pay him.

It's not overs based on the experience of our players.

N Jones contract

We have a good group of youngsters and we must keep them unlike GWS and GC losing players that have been there for 2 years.
Jesse Hogan, Viney, Tyson, Stretch, Bullen, Petracca, Brayshaw, JKH, Gawn, Frost, Oscar & Tom, Toumpas, Salem, Newton etc, there will be A grade in this lot,,

Hogan when he fires will be the player looking at a million..Petracca, Brayshaw and Tyson likely A grade 1/2 a mill..only time will tell

This lot will need looking after in the next 2 to 3 years ....Jones at best is B + grade, we need to pay him as such and no overs

Ah the never ending debate on where Jones is ranked. B+, A, A+, or star (although I don't think many rate him as star).

Jones is an A-grader IMO, he'd be a walk up in any team in the comp and fit in nicely. What he does isn't made better by the fact that we're average, in fact if he had better players around him it would probably (and hopefully will) make him better.

He's been paid unders for a while, pay him a bit over or give him an extra year as a repayment for sticking fat and being one of the guys driving the change. Just front end it so we can cover the others when they hit their straps.

Entirely agree. A great citizen, one of the few (if only) clear consistent 100% total effort players we have had recently.

Through coaching changes, deaths, administrative turmoil and an ever changing list he has relentlessly worked to make himself a better player for the Melbourne Football Club.

Heart and soul.

He has a great opportunity to truly be heart and soul for the next few years if he signs this long term deal. It really should parallel Robbie Flower's career nicely. Hopefully he'll get his second final series very soon. Can't see it happening until he's 29 or 30 though.

As mentioned above, average age/experience of our players. No Mitch, no Chip, Dawes in the third year of his contract, Vince might be on something half decent. We should be able to satisfy Jones and still be able to make a big play for a free agent come seasons end.

Love all the cocky heroes who think that because we got some good kids coming through that now Jones isn't as valuable and doesn't deserve the pay or contract length he required.

Jones deserves everything and more.

We can have varying opinions as to him being "elite" but you are not factoring in what he brings to field, the club and the group without even kicking/touching the ball. His intensity and desire and yes, leadership is A+.

I'm worried about this. If we don't have a signature by round one he is gone.

What's the hold up?

And the diagnosis is...?

The hold up is the usual argy-bargy re terms as negotiated by his manager. And now it's the Xmas break so expect an outcome next week or relax and wait until the new year. He's not going anywhere.

He's weighing up a multi million dollar deal with us, or the possibility of any sort of deal from Hawthorn.

Seek help.

A change of scenery might be the tonic. I've heard Geelong is a goer!

I looked in the dictionary for 'panic' and found the above example.

The Demons’ aggressive small forward who kicks goals and defends the Demons’ ball in the forward arc.
