Trengove..calling it now

if he can get over this injury..he will become the elite player we hoped. This new game plan suits him to a tee, he is an endurance runner who loves the contested footy and is clean in tight. If he gets fit, watch him get to contest after contest as the others tire off through out the game and use his clean hands to extract it and lets not forget his tackling, he's no slouch in that department.

He will thrive with the enthusiasm generated from the rest of the team (no wonder he looked so flat, imagine being a 21 year old captain with that sort of team morale). Another if, but if he gets that burst power back then he could be anything. We never got to see him play this game plan, just watch him run all day every game contest after contest, where his lack of speed won't be shown up as much. Could be a luke ball type. Hate to use the word but the potential of him and Hogan coming into this team next year is just massive so don't be as surprised if we are not as aggressive come trade time as you all think.

Lets just wait and see if he can get on the park again before making big calls.

getting on the park is a bit of a thing currently.

For mine...all bets about anyone remain off til they can ACTUALLY get on the ground in a meaningful maner.

Appreciate the sentiment...I just live in real world. Hope is one thing , realisation another.

edit...beat me to it YD :)

i know, but i'm confident.. the meds in the afl seem to have the nav bone injuries under control these days. Must of learnt a lot since egan and croad injuries.

  • 2 weeks later...

After seeing him speak to Burgo on the mfc website I thought I'd remind myself of his potential at draft time:

http://afldraftinfo.blogspot.com.au/2009/07/jack-trengove-sturtsa-draft-profile.html

Height: 185cm

Weight: 82kg

Position: Midfield

Potential: 8.5-9.5/10

Style: Trent Cotchin?

Strengths

> He has an outstanding football brain - reads the play very well as both an inside (including being a prolific 1st possession winner) and outside player – averaged 22.8dpg at U18 championships

> Tremendous poise, vision and DM with the football – has time with the football and is creative

> Sharp reflexes , decent-good pace off the mark and evasive ability – is capable of bursting from a stoppage into some space or weaving through traffic – can find a higher gear in space if needed - capable of a good leap too

> Good attack on the footy

> Excellent core strength and balance with great ability to stand up in tackles – very tough to bring down in a tackle

> Very good-excellent dual sided kick – weighting, control and accuracy over short-medium range is first class – OK-decent depth at best would be the only 'slight' knock

> Clean, reliable hands at ground level

> Very strong OH for a midfielder – uses his leap very well and attacks his marks – takes some classic floating marks across the pack

> Excellent work-rate in both directions – defensive ethic is good and does the 1%ers - in terms of ground coverage him and Scully are the clear standouts of those I’ve seen live

> Has been said to have excellent leadership ability and future captain potential at AFL

> Has very good scoreboard impact in terms of both assists as well as goal kicking ability averaging 1gpg across the U18 championships

Weaknesses

No notable concerns.

Other

> He’s a genuine midfielder, but is very capable and adaptable to playing off either a HB or HF flank or a wing

> Decent build at present and has the frame to develop into a strong midfielders build

> Outstanding form at SANFL level for an U18, was a consistently very good performer particularly in finals footy – was widely considered BOG in the preliminary final (29d, 8m including a match saving mark late in the game) – should be ready for AFL action R1 next year and best positioned amongst all in this draft to have the biggest impact next year

> 2009 SA U18 Captain, AA U18 RR and SA U18 MVP

Overall

Trengove is a potential elite midfield prospect – the complete package - with an excellent and very well rounded game without any real concerns. I think he has the potential to at best be a top 20 AFL player in the competition when he matures – and is a definite top 2 prospect in this draft.

timmy.

I really appreciate your positive outlook - FCS us old-timers have put up with a lot so maybe don't share your or anyone else's optomism - and I hope to hell you are 100% correct in all you say, but as others have pointed out, let us see the guy on the field before we say too much.

GO DEES

He was certainly looking much better in the nab cup

2011 Moloney, Rivers, Frawley, Jones, Trengove, Garland, Jamar, Martin, Watts, Sylvia
2012 Jones, Grimes, McDonald, McKenzie, Rivers, Garland, Howe, Trengove, Frawley, Dunn
2013 Jones, Garland, Terlich, MJones, Sylvia, Dunn, Frawley, Trengove, Howe, McDonald

Just looked at this and was very surprised to see .. he's just not a player I remember having much impact on many games. Then again, placing 5th-8th in a side like that isn't exactly a huge achievement.

Loooong way to go before he lives up to that draft description above

The thing about trenners is I reckon he's solid and makes decent decisions but with no pace or penetration just isn't as damaging as we'd hoped he would be, hopefully he is right after he comes back

i know, but i'm confident.. the meds in the afl seem to have the nav bone injuries under control these days. Must of learnt a lot since egan and croad injuries.

The only similarity in their injuries were that they were in the midfoot. Both Egan's and Croad's were far more complicated. Nothing to do with medical advance, just different pathologies.

Trenners looked very good in his first year and can play, he was a lesser player after he was suspended for his tackle on Dangerfield, not sure what the reason was but if he can regain the form of year one then it will be like having a new recruit.

Don't underestimate him.

It's all about confidence and he's had it knocked out of him over the last few years.

I remember thinking at the time we struck absolute Gold with Trengove because I thought he was a clear number 1 draft pick ahead of Scully. His first two years had us salivating at the thought of a future star on our hands.

I dont know what happened after that but I think one obvious why his form halted was because of the captaincy. He was just way too young. I also reckon he tried to play through injury aswell. He just lost the power and speed off the mark. I really he comes back fit and firing next year because he showed traits of a seriously gun midfielder. If Roos can turn Pedersen, Bail and and Mark Jamars career around I have full faith he can do the exact same to Trenners

That's the thing Roosy has turned Pedo, Bail, Dunn, Jamar and others from possibly not even AFL standard to solid AFL players in a few months, Trenners has more talent than all of them combined and it's a huge potential upside for our team if he can get him playing how well he is capable, i remember pre draft being told to watch him as he was the second coming of Nathan Buckley

Quality individual

Super competetive

Good athlete

Good football brain

Does an amazing amount off the ball - has led the club for 1%ers I believe

We all hope that his past two years are an aberration caused by his foot injury. Would love to see what he could really do with full fitness.

I still don't understand the reason why this apparently results in bad football. You can say he was too young to be a good captain, but why not a good footballer. Same as the 'we debuted Watts too early' argument.

I think we ll be lucky to see him on the park again. Didn't this type of injury end Trent Croads career?

Easy to forget how good this kid was pre-Neeld

Came 5th in the Best and Fairest in 2011 despite being suspended 3 games for a brilliant tackle on cry baby Dangerfield

Player Votes 1st Brent Moloney 227 2nd Jared Rivers 201 3rd James Frawley 178 4th Nathan Jones 171 5th Jack Trengove 170

If not for that ridiculous suspension he wouldd have come 3rd at worst

Hes a gun and I cant wait for him to return with his foot problems sorted and some pace and agility regained

Trengove himself has admitted that it effected his performance.

Its really not that hard to figure it out aswell CB.. a 20 year year given a big responsibility on top of Jim Stynes death then heated media scrutiny for two years tanking, poor form, coach sacking etc... With all the [censored] that went on it would have mentally affected his performance. He wasn't experienced enough or even taught how to handle the pressure that this club copped in what was one of Melbournes darkest period in its history.

Has been carrying some sort of injury for some time now.

Agree the tackle suspension knocked something out of him. Has not been the same since.

Can't wait for him to get back into it minus the star jumps whilst standing the mark.

In respect to an earlier post a category of weakness mentioned. I'd respectfully suggest an inability to take the park in the peak of fitness required to play to his ability is the unfortunate reality.

Love to see this kid re-boot as it were. Showed immense potential as warranted his high drafting but its been hit and miss since.

I already posted that

Needs to be leaner so he can cover the ground better. Seems a bit slow.

....and you could run at your best with a chronic navicular injury (presumably that his has in fact been chronic)?

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
