Geoff Tunbridge

Watching Christian Salem throw the ball onto his boot for a great goal in the first quarter against Adelaide reminded me of Geoff Tunbridge. Geoff kicked like that EVERY time and the ball would seemingly miraculously pass between the big posts. He could only kick with his left foot but always seemed to find the time to get himself into position to kick his very wobbly, looping goals. Yes, he would just throw the ball towards his boot and the result more times than often was the perfect one. Uglier goals you would never see BUT we Demon supporters thought they were just beautiful. We are on the way back thanks to Roos and our fantastic recruiting. Go Dees.

Reckon Salem meant to kick it the way it turned out. One of the commentators said it was an accident or a fluke but blokes with elite kicking skills can improvise well when under pressure.

It was a rushed ball drop but it didn't matter - he was able to adjust. The distance he kicked the ball was the "tell" He actually kicked through the ball and that generally doesn't happen when you miskick it. He knew what he was doing IMO.

Along with Watts, he's already one of our best kicks. I'd keep him as the sub for a bit longer though. There's plenty of time for Christian and we need to develop him properly. He may be a starter with Viney out though.

Edit: Viney is now playing! (and rightfully so)

Good pick up Bobby, its nice to reminisce occasionally. Fingers crossed, Christian won't attempt to emulate Brian Dixon's kicking style any time soon. Chip Frawley is already making a reasonable fist of that.

I have no idea what Brian's style was like Deeold but can i throw another player into the mix who needs some expert coaching with his kicking (i assume/hope he's getting it) and that T Mc. Ithink his limit is about 35 meters at full tilt or am i seeing things?

Amazing how often Dicko's team mates made his kicks look better than they were.

Barry Vagg was a lot like Tunna

Personally I still think he kicks like Adam Yze..

Well, of course I have to reply to this, Bobby, and indeed it was the memory of one of those high, looping kicks to goal that inspired my choice of nom-de-plume. Thank you.

I don't know anything about Geoff Tunbridge, so I looked him up on Wikipedia. Assuming what is written is correct (and I know that's a risk with Wikipedia) I'm amused that he refused payment and that he accepted a meat pie before each game. The man had style.

I haven't heard of the pie story but if true it sure helped his kicking for goal!

I have now seen Salem arse two ridiculous goals.

Daicos had a habit of doing that also. In fact, he won a Coleman with his flukey style.

The fact that Salem has been kicking the pill since he was two makes think there is some design to it.

I loved his playing. ..don't know exactly, but I thought most players then just got petrol money and a meat pie on game day.

I thought the commentary was bit off, some players can definitely adjust and can get the ball heading the right direction, even if they are being tackled or pressured. Just because it wasn't and end over end drop punt doesn't mean it was a fluke.

I heard train/tram fares and home-made sandwiches on the way to the G. I think they made up for it after game though.

Yes Deeold that's what I heard. Petrol money for those driving etc., but they all got the meat pie!

And I think the culture was better for it, without the huge player payments.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
