I have Essendon slipping so low, based purely on the fact I expect a few of their key players to be, err, unavailable for selection.

I believe GCS will make their mark this year and I think GWS will show little or no improvement on last year.

Richmond will regain their rightful position just outside the 8 and Collingwood will start to fade.

As for the MFC, I would like to think that the Richmond and Geelong pre season games were more indicative of our form and that we will win enough this year to progress up to 12th. Hawthorn in their first two NAB games and practice match against us showed they are an unstoppable force.

- wanted to be able to put melbourne up around where we were under bailey, but i can't see us improving so much that we overtake the teams above us.

God how lovely would it be if those three all missed the eight?

I personally don't understand why everyone is writing off Port Adelaide. Their key midfielders like Wingard, Boak, Hartlett, Wines, Ebert, Polec, Gray etc are only going to get better. As will their developing KPP's like Lobbe, Trengove etc. Add this to their established KPP's like Schulz, Westhoff and Carlisle, and I believe they'll sneak up on everyone again this year.

Not to mention they have Ken Hinkley, who IMO is one of the top few coaches in the league.

for me it's more about stiff competition than anything, they will have to knock off some real quality teams to play finals this year, going to be an extremely even season with a few standouts and a couple of easy beats

The reason Port won't be top 4 is last night, third quarter. They dropped off the face of the planet and let a very average Carlton dominate them.

Hawks and Freo will tear them to shreds.

Based on the first four matches though, I'd say the gulf between top 2 and everyone else is simply enormous. Sydney, Carlton and Collingwood all looked very, very average. And that makes me incredibly happy!

Hawks & Freo will tear many sides to shreads, doesn't mean Port wont be pushing top 4

I actually want to revise mine, Collingwood and Carlton look seriously ordinary, I can't see either getting anywhere near the top 8

I reckon this will be a year of big change and big surprise. The ladder is really tough to predict and I have no confidence in my predictions at all, with my biggest confusion being around Collingwood, Richmond and Carlton. But here goes:

Hawthorn
Fremantle
Richmond
Sydney
Collingwood
Essendon
Port Adelaide
Gold Coast
Geelong
Western Bulldogs
North Melbourne
Melbourne
Adelaide
Carlton
West Coast
GWS
Brisbane
St. Kilda

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
