While the deal in the end was Vince for Sylvia we infact gave up pick 23 for Vince.

The Crows picked Matt Crouch with pick 23 who from 6 games this year is ave 18 disposals.

Compare that to Brayshaws 15.

Vince is what we needed at the time but we did give up a 10-12 year A-B grade midfielder for him.

Brayshaw having 10 disposals in a match, would be more effective than Matt Crouch having 20 disposals.

I wouldn't put too much weight on Matt Crouch having a lot of the football, because he has been largely ineffective.

I would be very surprised if we look back at the end of Crouch's career - and kick ourselves for taking Bernie Vince ahead of him, Vince is effective, that is what we need.

The amount of benefit our young brigade will receive, having Bernie Vince out there, cannot be measured.

Out of all the kids we could've taken with the Sylvia pick, there is only 1 player that would outweigh the Vince trade. So 9.5 times out of 10, you would take Bernie Vince.

This isn't even taking into account that amount of improvement that Vince could have in him, he is in career best form, is a 'footballer's' footballer, and could play till he is 35.

My kids love Bernie Vince. He's a crowd pleaser and we need that as well as a club....

Pleaaaaaaaase. Crouch looks ok, but so did Jordan Gysberts and Cale Morton once. If he was the 10-12 year A-B grade midfielder that you're so certain he will become, then he would have played more than 6 games. Hyperbole. We wouldn't have selected him anyway.

Vince was a classic Paul Roos trade and I don't see any reason why he can't play until he's 32-33 if the injuries stay away. He started his career later than most and doesn't rely on pace or athleticism to dominate games.

In terms of what he brings to the side in terms of balance, experience, and a bit of spark around the place, Vince is irreplaceable, and the trade was a master stroke.

Watch how many times Jones/Vince exchange the ball - a midfield that stays together, plays together.

There's rarely an obvious player to pick at pick 23 though. The Crows would've had him in mind due to the fact he's Brad's younger brother too. Vince is a bargain in anyone's eyes, very talented player who was too young to pack up shop after the Crows tired of him

Yeah he and Jones seem to have a great onfield relationship. Jonesy was loving it when Vince put that one through on his left.

The Crows had the luxury of having Dangerfield, Sloane, Thompson, Douglas, Reilly etc... And they needed to get back into the draft.

We had Nathan Jones...

A lot of Adelaide supporters would still prefer Bernie, especially this year pushing for finals.

I think it's a deal everyone won, except the emotional supporters that had Bernie as a favourite son. But [censored] them, he's ours now.

It was definitely a win win deal I reckon.

Except for Fremantle, they well and truly stuffed that up... but he was a free agent, so it didn't cost them anything really.

They didn't give up anything though.

Didn't they, Nasher? Didn't they?

Hey, now wait, they didn't...

And, we have/had enough kids, we needed Bernie Vince to alleviate the pressure on those kids, not add another one for them to have no-one (bar Jones) to look up to.

Vince is not only highly effective, he has virtually invented a new role, that of the creative stopper, shutting down a key opposition player while being a playmaker and finisher himself.

Equally important I think, is his work as chief morale officer. Clubs need blokes like Bernie - always up beat, likeable and ready for a laugh.

Anyone can make themselves a dour professional if they try hard enough (think a former number one draft pick who absconded north), but professionals who also lift everyone up around them regardless of what else is happening are invaluable. That's how I see Bernie giving us some X factor.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
