Colin Sylvia going ... going ... GONE!

Featured Replies

Actually this always tickles me...the notion of nothing to play for. its actually this that goes to the heart of Cols problem, his attitude. That he ( or indeed you summise ) he has nothing to play for suggest he is most definitely the wrong type of person to ever have.

THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING TO PLAY FOR

Ask the Vineys and the nuggets of this world , indeed this team, ask Garland , ask Trengove, Grimes, Clark Dawes the same question and be astounded by their response, that is after they get over the incredulity of the question.

There is pride. Pride in self, of the club and its jumper of the value your team mates instill in you. there is the accomplishment and satisfaction of adding to something, in building not just the participating.

even if these real values dont get yo there... I would like to think honouring a contract whereby someone is paying you a very large sum to perform to your ability might actually mean something.

but your'e probably right...Col couldnt find anything to play for.

hes a midfielder's a..... btw

disagree Bbsy... The chicken Or the egg.

its a losing mentality-attitude that has been infected in this club for over the last 45 + years... it has at times been less prevalent, but is still embedded in our spirit, even if sometimes dormant.

in the past our kids have come in to a friendly, laughing, & happygolucky environment that is a bit of pretense. a cover for the disappointment felt from the expectation of another likely wasted season of hard work & playhard.

This has embedded itself into the clubs subconscious culture, it effects all. unwittingly taking its hostages, while there looking over there.

once its embedded into individuals, its mostly too hard to eradicate with out them moving on to new clubs where they are no longer in any sort of power. there they are at the mercy of the cultural environment of the new club, & its hierarchy.

its Hard to shift out without dropping a bomb on the place & starting again.. especially after four & a half decades mostly of this going on.

This is why, even when we've had powerful lists, we've have fallen short at the crunch, Prelims' & GrandFinals.

& this is why I want the Clubs Offices & Boardroom moved out of the 'G'..... the hunger has to become insatiable, & unpalatable... OnField success the only break-fast for the hunger.

.

Actually further to the ideas of compo keep in mind its the residual that is compensated . If we bring a FA in and lose Sylvia we may well get nothing . just saying

How quickly we forget Watts re-signing...

Anyway, it'll be hilarious if Col stays, after all the distaste towards him in this thread.

Look a bit like this I think:

FsKhvQS.gif

I don't mind him leaving for Freo, he has a chance to win a flag. If he leaves for Essendon I'll be staggered, what a poor choice that would be.

Regarding compo, I have said and rpfc has said, there are 6 bands:

1. After our 1st round (pick 3)

2. After the first round (pick 17)

3. After our 2nd round (pick 19)

4. After the second round (pick 33)

5. After our 3rd round (pick 35)

6. Not good enough to warrant compo

The above picks take into account Essendon and Adelaide draft suspensions but not other free agent compensation picks.

I think it's likely we will get band 2 or 3 compo which I would be happy with for sylvia.

I can't see us getting band 1, and with 4th band I'd be disappointed because while on a competition scale he may not be one of the elite, he is clearly one of our best players, one of our few senior players, and that should be a big part of the "compensation" process.

5th or 6th I'd be fuming and accusing the AFL of trying to kill us quickly.

Anyone claiming "late second or 3rd round as compo" doesn't understand the compo band process.

Thanks for clarifying that Deanox. Very useful info. Of course, the compo is also calculated (as much as the AFL does any transparent calculations) using any FAs picked up by the club losing a FA.

Sylvia has nominated Fremantle

Denham is a spud! Col won't end up in Perth and I GUARANTEE that.

Col just announced that Freo is now his preferred club of choice - how are you feeling ?

i know how inconsistent he has been, but i liked him.. i for one am sad to see him go.. but i wish him well.

haha you look like the biggest spud now

gone

tears shed ..zero. Show me the compo.

Really sad news... All the best to him. Will be great for them.

Only positive is it will free up a bit more cash for a FA

Ok now this frees up some cap space. And hopefully a 2nd round compo.

Dont care that hes gone.

We better get a high compo pick though.

Anyone who thinks this is a good thing are in denial.

And I can almost guarantee we will all be left underwhelmed when the compensation is announced.

Once we pick up Cross and another FA, we wont get any compensation....

Lose him for nothing

This is a loss for us - just another senior player and a solid contributor that we have to replace.

As we know this has not been easy recently.

Big loss

I can not fathom the flippancy being demonstrated here about the impending loss of Sylvia. There is a hint of the mouse with the electric pellet.

Exactly how many times does the club need to be decimated on the field by the loss of its senior players for it to sink in? Without Sylvia this year, we would have quite literally had ONE senior contributor in the midfield in Jones. We are talking here about the loss of our only other senior midfielder worth a pinch of muck.

Edit: Just seen confirmation he's gone. Getting fair compensation is now vital.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • PREGAME: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
