Sydney Swans offer Franklin $7 million

If reports are true then that is 2.2m per season on two players! Makes it difficult to squeeze in everyone else!

lol - if they want to blow all their money on one player then go ahead.

You don't get it Young Dee. We thought they had blown all their money with Tippett and lo and behold, they still have a little more to squeeze in a superstar.

The competition is rapidly becoming two tier. IMO, never before has there been such a divide between the haves and have nots. There are at least 4 teams that may never win a Premiership in my lifetime. Eventually, people will become disenfranchised with the AFL and there will be big clubs and corporates. Worrying.

I know that's the issue but this will mean they will be seriously tight for salary room going forward.

They are paying a huge amount for one player and a player that we do not want/need.

Now we can circle their under paid midfielders.

"The Swans must clear the decks to fit Franklin into the salary cap but are helped by a combination of retirements and players on the move.

Space in the salary cap has been created by the retirement of three 2012 premiership players Jude Bolton, Marty Mattner and Mitch Morton.

Power forward Jesse White has also requested a trade and has met with Collingwood.

The big blow for the Swans would be the almost certain departure of premiership ruckman Shane Mumford."

  1. The GIANTS have withdrawn their offer to Buddy Franklin based on advice that he will accept an offer from the Swans

Huge.

Tony Sheahan was on the money before anyone else. Good on him.

This is seriously huge. First, that Sydney can afford Franklin. Second, that he would have one successful club for another (if I were a Hawks fan I'd be more upset). Third, that GWS has missed out - where do they go now?

Posted

This is what the AFL deserves..The living expense that Sydney are allowed and can now fit in to afford Buddy after what happened with Tippet is a joke, and now the one player that could have brought so much publicity and lime light to the struggling GWS giant fan base is now not joining? Andrew Demetriou screw your head on..

Absolute farce. $9.13 million is the base salary.
We add in the allowance and we call it a flat $10 million for Sydney.

$2.2 mill will be to two players.

That means the average wage for the remaining 42 players on the list is 185,000$.
Now it sounds like alot, but Jack, Hannebury, Reid, McVeigh & Kennedy must be on minimum 350k each. All of Rookie contracts and all stars or not far off. Thats another nearly $2million of the cap. 5.7 million left for 37 players. 4 rookies can be on 50k so 5.5 million for 33 players. Let's call in 10 players on rookie contracts of an average of 100k a year that still leaves 23 non rookie players with 4.5 million. An average of 195,000. To afford players like Pyke, McGlynn, Bird, Grundy, Malceski, O'Keefe, Richards and Parker on that money which is less than what we'd be paying Tapscott is not possible.

Posted

I've completely forgotten Adam Goodes in that list. He'd be on at least 300k himself. It just reduces the amounts left. You also need to leave salary cap room for match payments to players...

Something is wrong here, and I hope everyone brings up hell.

and to think that all the other clubs were worried about MFC getting a PP.............................priorities?

this will serve them all right

Total agreement! Goodes would be on more than 300k though but will he retire? It makes me wonder whether the AFL really gives a toss about us?

This is why we should come in quick smart and chase one of their midfielders which some will be squeezed. Bird or Luke Parker is who we should chase hard.

Maybe Rawlings was on his way to Sydney to speak to them?

Bad move by Sydney

This will end the COLA for them. The other 17 clubs will make sure of it. It will also be terrible for team morale.

Two players taking up half the salary cap, when they have a few midfielders that deserve just as much money.

Posted

What a joke. Obviously the cost of living had zero impact on Buddies decision because he's happily going to move into a Bondi pad.

They should scrap the COLA immediately or change the rule to give rookies and draftees and extra 5,000 over the first year to help with rent differences.

Every other player on an AFL list besides first and second season rookies and draftees makes over 80,000 if not more at which point cost of living is a load of crap. They aren't scraping by on 30,000 a year.

The AFL have out cheated themselves on this one.

Posted

A couple of points.

It would seem then that the Swans have ditched their "no dick head" policy

It is now time for that hypocrite Dimitriou who bleats on and on about "the integrity of the game" to tender his resignation. It is scandalous that the Swans have it seems an unlimited salary cap, with third party deals etc topping up their already inflated cap. NO INTEGRITY HERE, ANDREW.

Posted

One thing that particularly irritates me about this is that the AFL coaches kicked up a stink when we applied for another Priority Pick (i know we don't really deserve one) being the worst side in the AFL for years, which the Priority Pick may help as get off the bottom and perhaps win more than 2 games and help us be competitive, ultimately bringing more money to the clubs we play. Which the AFL rejected our application.
Yet they let this rubbish go on, with Sydney ( a consistent top 4 side) being able to secure Tippett and now Buddy (perhaps) through the use of this extra million dollars they receive in the salary cap due to "expensive living" in Sydney, all approved by the AFL. Absolute joke.

Mumford and White already leaving because the Tippett and Franklin money took it all off the table for them

So now Sydney will be:

Ruck: Pyke

FF/ruck: Tippett

CHF: Reid or Franklin

+/- Goodes

Compared to before:

Ruck: Mumford

FF/ruck: Pyke

CHF: Tippett

+/- Reid, White, Goodes

So Sydney will have lost a lot of depth (who's their back up ruck if Pyke goes down) and placed pressure on the rest of the list financially.

Hawthorn star Lance Franklin set to join Sydney Swans after GWS withdraws offer

After GWS have reportedly withdrawn the offer to Buddy, it would seem the Swans are now in the van to pick him up.

Given Colless' recent out burst against Roos, seems he is more than comfortable to use the salary cap concessions Sydney has long been afforded by the AFL, to gasump GWS, right under their noses.

Gooses and ganders come to mind here

Dear Mr Demetriou ,

The AFL equalisation dream is a buddy farce.

It is now clear the AFL is absolutely determined to give favoured nation status to certain clubs to the detriment of others.

Can you please pronounce equalisation dead and invite the also rans to abandon any hope of success under your administration.

Its the only decent thing to do.

Ps: Eddie, yourself and the others should refund the costs of the USA trip

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
