When he left we suddenly went on an era far more successful than the previous two decades. That has a lot to do with recruitment under his tenure but also intangibles like culture would have been affected.

Perhaps he left a foundation that Northey brought to boil and we kept it warm with occasional tepid and hot moments for 20 years.

I am expecting the effect of Roos to be felt long after he has moved on.

I would just like to see the end of the weekly floggings.

If we get Paul Roos it could mean more than just a coach.

Because the thing is that Melbourne will offer some big names some big money and instead of them dismissing us.. they might decide to come to Melbourne as playing under Roos is even more of an incentive.

You don't pay a years wage in one week.

Our overhead each week will go up but revenue streams will start coming out of areas we didn't know existed with Roos on board.

Oh, and more people might sign up and come to games if we suck less...

Obviously you don't pay a years wage in one week. I just don't imagine that signing Roos on will automatically solve all our financial worries and allow us to pay him that much.

Stadium situation will be similar I think - it doesn't take one season to boost crowd numbers significantly enough to make more money. Membership will probably be a similar situation.

Hopefully our new administration can get sponsors on board but I think the situation is a little concerning, especially with paying the rest of the coaching staff.

As you say though, no doubt Jackson and co will be sorting this out. They wouldn't have made an offer which isn't viable.

I would suspect though that the AFL will pay Melbourne 3 million dollars for next year and another 3 million dollars in 2015.

So that would put us on track and hopefully the money will flow in from revenue, sales and crowds

so that would explain it in my opinion.

We can rise quickly with some smart decisions recruiting very good midfielders. This is the only thing we are lacking!

I would expect a clearly more competitive and better coached unit in 2014, not sure if that will mean more wins, but i would hope far less floggings, far more respect from the comp and some exciting footy from our boys.

reckon 3-4 players might have huge break outs under a decent coach, going to guess now it will be

A previous post spoke of dormant talent. I agree with this. I think of Michael Evans as a prime example of a bloke with a great deal to offer but injury has curtailed a promising start. Roos appears to have the ability to get the best out of players. Most importantly, he gives them specific roles.

If we finish higher I would be very surprised. Him coming in (hypothetically) will not make us this super competitive side. We have a long way to go before we can match the big boys in the AFL. A team with a full pre season under Roos and a few games into them under him would be well aware you tow the line or your out, you do the 1%ers, you take ownership when they get a run on and you kill the game and their momentum, you remain disciplined and never leave your man free, you force stoppages to kill the oppositions free running style or just to break momentum. It is the way the Swans played and it is the way Freo play, had we played that way today

• the goals we gave away with lose checking would have been far less
• the clearances and breakaways made from them with lose checking resulting in numerous inside 50's would have been reduced
• the discipline and team ethos to adhere to game plan and run hard for each other would make us some what robotic but reduce turnovers
• his game style pressurises opposition sides at stoppages, negates quick ball movement on the rebound and forces them to over possess increasing the capacity to turn the ball over
• whilst some consider this style not pretty under Roos we would be within range of opponents on most occasions due to his game plan.

It is for these reasons we will see improvement against the sides in the bottom 6/7 and this will bring more wins. We will continue to struggle against the stronger sides but we will see improvement and small steps which IMO will make us a mid table side fairly quickly.

Well, if Aleister Crowley did come back from the grave (I believe he has the right connections), he would be picking a team whose nicknames symbolize many of his beliefs (Devils, torturing poor innocents (Melbourne supporters), getting sodomized (the players rolling over to the opposition).

Another prediction (if Roos signs on): Sydney v Melbourne at the SCG, Round 2, Saturday night televised on Channel 7. (Round 1 still likely to be GWS v Sydney, in my view).

Yep that's what I'm saying, there have been games this year and last where we have been blown away in 20 minutes, that IMO would not happen under Roos.

Interesting that almost a third think the best we could do in 2014 under Roos is 15th or lower.

Exactly RP. The AFL know that helping us to pay overs to get Roos is a short term loss making venture that offers a medium to long term pay off. It's about limiting the amount they would have to fund us for over say 5 to 7 years if we don't snag the big sausage.

In any business, especially team oriented sport, its all about selling the sizzle and winning. But for us to even start selling the sizzle (eg Friday night matches Demons v Swans etc ) we need the big sausage.

If reports are correct that he met with certain members of the leadership group last week then I believe we have our sausage.

Having Roos is charge means we're not going to get pushed around by the media like Neeld was, plus all the other positves

Demoneyes I think only one of your eyes is working.

We have no CHB and still 2 HBF short ( If Grimes leaves the midfield make that one )]

We have two ruckman who show promise but they are still far from the top half of the competitions ruckmen.

We have two key Forwards who are injury crocks and IMO we will struggle to ever have both of them on the field at the one time.

We have no small forwards and with loss of Davey and potentially Sylvia our experience level will again fall for 2014.

Now of course this takes no account of any senior players we might recruit this off season.

But don't deluded yourself that we only need a few midfield players.

There is a reason we had two wins, got belted in another dozen and were generally uncompetitive.

We have a crap list and it will take 3 years make a serious impact with replacement players.
