Agree with comment that a really good midfield coach would help (eg: Simpson or Voss) and I reckon he has the vision and smarts to be elite, but the big issue is his leg-speed.

Misson has been good for getting the boys endurance fit, but the club needs to employ a genuine sprints coach who can get him and his mate Tapscott working on leg-drills and improving their leg drive.

If the club can't afford to employ one then I reckon they should employ one themselves - after all it's their career on the line.

Both boys have the right attitude and are courageous.

But unless they can find an extra yard, they cannot provide us with enough run and carry or the ability to chase down opponents to make a genuine impact at AFL level.

Why will he be a gun?

He hasn't shown it yet. I think we are praying he will get there purely based on the position he went in the draft.

Can't just look at what's on the surface mate, he is the best defensive footballer at our club by a mile, in his first two years he had some great offensive flair, put them together and you have a complete player, we have 3-5 on our list maybe

he gets his zipp back with an injury free run at it and he will get to 20% more contests and the 20 touches goes up to 25-30, 30 touches and 5 tackles a game is all you could ask from him really, providing he uses it well ( which can be worked on and will improve with confidence )

I disagree with the OP. You could say that about any underperforming player. Trengove is greatly underperforming and a midfield liability.

The support argument is certainly valid, amazed people are saying it's not, Put Jack Viney or Nathan Jones in Geelongs midfield and see if they improve,

that is not an issue with Trengove though, he wins his own ball and on the most part his disposal is okay, the issue is his agility, which i'd bet my liver is OP mixed with confidence issues and the stress fracture a little bit and probably just the terrible development programs of the MFC

Roos, Eade, Williams, Bailey, Craig and Neeld all have said he will be Elite, he works too hard not to be

A lot can be said about having experience players to guide the young players.... But the evidenced is Bartram and Bate.... When they debut, they had a solid team to guide them and they looked a million dollars... When Trengove and Watts debut all the experience was moved on.... Hopefully this hasn't hampered their development....

Trengove has a real class about they way he moves... Currently we only get snippets of this.... But its there.... Scully was the one drafted for speed.... Trengove was drafted for his skill and class.... Hopefully we see his full potential.... With confidence he could be our Jobe Watson or our Luke hodge....

And Scully's still quick, but Trengove's skill is average at best and if he shows class when moving it's working class movement. Some of his running efforts have been borderline embarrassing. There's either something physically wrong with him or he doesn't have his complete heart in to playing for and captaining Melbourne. I mean, if you were going to argue for the personnel issue making Trengove a worse player, I'd say Scully's void has hit him like a ton of bricks. There's really little to suggest Trengove is a gun player, he's one of our best tacklers and gets to stoppages, but he's largely invisible during games and he hasn't done enough to help this sinking club.

Liability means it decreases your value. Trengove is definitely disappointing, but I think it's ridiculous to assert that having Trengove in our midfield makes our midfield worse.

yesterday was pretty solid boys. 27 possessions, looked to be fitter and fierce tackling. i was impressed.

With that, i was only happy with about 4/5 players games yesterday, but Trengove looked like he was getting better.

My worry is with the other captain. Grimes is still a horrible decision maker. Trenners still looks slow but I love his endeavour. He'd be first on the team sheet every week for me, along with Col Garland and J Viney.

Trengove has been to the Colin Sylvia school of long kicking in hope of it finding a target and wasting it, rarely to an opposition player, but just into space and it becoming a 50/50 prospect rather than to our advantage.

Needs to lower his eyes, and look in board for targets, as without our top forwards in, its a turnover everytime!

That said, his tackling and pressure were great, and confidence is growing, a solid, not torturous, preseason is what he needs, body wont stand up to being flogged 4 times a week!

I was talking to an employee of Freos footy department last week. I asked about Melbourne. He commented that many in the industry believe Neeld and Misson have put too many endurance miles in their legs in the pre season.

Upshot is a list of players who are sluggish over the first 5-10 metres. I mentioned Blease as a refute. He commented that endurance training is good for the really quick players, but if they aren't explosive to start with they'll end up sluggish. Trengove clearly in the latter category.

With some high draft picks it feels like blind faith waiting for them to come on. I don't feel that way with Trengove. I think he will be a very, very good player. His awareness is already there, just needs to stop running in the shallows.

To be honest, Trengove even looks like he is getting fitter. I have no doubt he will be a very good outside player, maybe better/as good as Sidebottom.

I personally didn't notice any increase in his speed during Sundays game however he looked very confident in his marking again, which I haven't noticed for a while. In patches he really looked like his 2010/2011 self however there is a way to go.

For the last month he's been high up on the stats sheet then dropped off in the second half. Good to see him make a consistent effort and get the 27 touches. I'd like to see him crack 30 in the last 2 matches. I'm still concerned about the virtues of a slow outside player but if he accumulates and runs hard defensively then he's clever enough to contribute.

Remember Nathan Jones looked slow for a couple of years there. Then when he started to get really confident he's now incredibly hard to run down. He's learnt all about sidestepping and baulking. Hopefully Trenners gets some initial speed back after the preseason and combined with that confidence a new coach and season can bring can find consistency.
