I'm kicking off GAMEDAY with what, in hindsight, has turned out to be a rather bizarre coincidence in the history of Geelong v Melbourne meetings.

This was my opening post to the GAMEDAY thread from last year's encounter between the clubs:-

Starts early today with a tweet from the ground where the VFL game has started:-

Expect two changes for @CatsInsider today. Gillies and Byrnes not out there. #VFL

Byrnes and Gillies were the emergencies who came into the Cats' senior side to replace Selwood and Lonergan. Both are now with the MFC.

Welcome to the twilight zone.

On the Vline Footy Special and it is very light for Dees support. According to my mate in Geelong plenty of rain at the Cattery. Keen to see how we handle another top quality side today who play a different style of footy to the Swans. Hope we persist in taking the game on like we did last week and that Fitz and Watts back up again this week.

Brave people lol

If you're going down there today, you are a true bad-ass and have my eternal respect.

Just arriving there on the train...

Raaiiiiiiinnnnnn

Lights are on

I can still recall the numb sick feeling of 2011.

So can Brent Moloney.

Stokes late out for Cats. Blease and Horlin-Smith subs

Showing highlights of 186. Cruel bastards

and Stokes is a huge out

they are how good we want to be, get your note pads out lads

So can Brent Moloney.

Beamer didn't feel anything that day. He spent half of it asleep.

Blease sub?

Would rather see Byrnes with the green vest on personally. Hope he can pull his finger out today against his old side.

I think we'll be competitive for 3 quarters and make a game of it.

If Stokes is out, that is massive... Especially given that I think Christensen is out as well.

They are very underrated players.

raining heavily down here today

4 inside 50s without a score according to stats?

Don't have it on tv yet.

How stiff is that? Punch from the kick direct to Geelong hands

Like today isn't going to be tough enough, we have Dwayne Russell and David King to inflict a bit more pain.

This mob are just mudders.

We are playing against one of the best wet weather sides of recent times.

Geelong would do what they are doing to us - to any side.

And Bartel has barely even touched it, the best wet weather footballer in the comp - barring Ablett/McVeigh.

If we cannot take our chances inside 50, we will get smashed. FFS so many handballs inside 50. Why?

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
