The Trade/Draft Rumour Mill

GWS can have Frawley when they hand over Shiel, picks 1, 9, and Scully's ashes.

As for Dew, it's hardly a loss if it ensures Roos sees out at least 3 years.

Well, if you want to keep compensation, you better start liking this version of free agency because the player managers are already using discontent with the whole thing to sow the seed of removing compensation altogether.

Grab a hold of this FA because it is the softest form of it on this green earth.

Out of interest, what would player managers have to gain from removing compensation?

I think the biggest beef is that waiting to understand what compensation clubs will receive can hold up current negotiations if they are going to involve that compensation pick.

Remove the comp and you remove this hold up we have seen while teams are waiting for the comp, and removes the desire to not 'spoil' your comp by not signing a FA if you lost one.

It has restricted movement of players.

But a simplified compensation model is the answer in my book.

Agree with the hold up. Surely the way around that is to wrap up free agency and dispense compensation well before the end of the second week of trade period.

Maybe just Scully's ashes....

If Frawley is off then a swap this year makes sense but how do they convince him to go to GWS?

You can tell he is just sick of losing and having to try and stem the tide for 80% of a game.

The way the compensation should work is if your on bottom of ladder and lose a free agent you get a good pick, if your on top and lose a player you get a late pick in draft or nothing at all because let's be honest players will leave the bottom sides for a chance at a flag and the teams on bottom will need compo

Rumour - Frawley/Shiel - Straight swap - I heard it I am passing it on for what it is worth.

Frawley is worth much more than this. Pick one and Shiel I might consider but really Frawley is going nowhere.

I watch 360 sometimes and he doesn't annoy me, so much as he makes me chuckle. He cannot string a sentence together. Given he's the head football writer at the Sun, it says all you really need to know about AFL journalism.

Yes, and you can see how acutely embarrassed Gerard Whateley is by his antics, particularly his bizaar habit of periodically wanting to give Gerard a hug.

Robinson is a [censored] and a lightweight. He is simply unable to match either Caroline Wilson or Patrick Smith for intelligence and professionalism. It says as lot about the standards of journalism at the Herald-Sun that he is still employed, particularly when he missed most of the twists and turns in the biggest AFL story in a decade, the Essendon drug scandal. He has no business being employed at such a senior level by a major metropolitan newspaper.

Just in regards to the saints rumour - them chasing Billy Longer for their pick just after ours in the 2nd round...

I'm a fan of Gawn and think he's a decent developing prospect, but he's an ACL away from his career being on the rocks.

Spencer I'm more lukewarm on.

Jamar is gone.

Fitzy is a fwd, not a ruck.

None of these 4 have claimed the number 1 spot as theirs in recent times.

Longer however is a promising young ruckman, available on the cheap.

I've heard whispers about iffy character, but know no more.

Surely a decent prospect to bolster our ruck stocks for a 2nd round pick in a weak draft?

Worth having a crack at gazumping the saints?

Can't see how they'd be a more attractive destination than MFC.

Viv certainly agrees.

Good post. I would trade Jamar and Spencer, and go after Longer. After all, we tatgetted Hannath last year and just missed out. I think also Roos has plans of using Fitzy and Clark as ruckmen particularly in the front half. Clark, I think I'm right in saying, played the majority of his football in the ruck for Brisbane, and is very competent at it. With Dawes, Hogan, Fitzy and Howe down forward this year, Clark's forward skills are not so much needed, although he was extraordinarily good at it in his first half year at the club. The thing I really like about Clark up forward is he is an elite kick for goal. Nevertheless, I think we will see big Max and Clark as our primary ruckmen this year. I expect max to be one of the standout improvers under Roos.

I see where he is coming from. I was sure that we needed to trade pick 2 but having looked at it realistically what are the chances of us getting a star for pick 2?

If we cant - we should keep pick 2 (provided we can still bring in enough midfield players - both young potentials like Myers and seniors like Vince).

Losing Dew also seemed like a chink in Roos and PJ's unbreakable armour.

I think losing Dew might be a blessing in disguise. If it is true they have postponed the appointment of Roos successor for twelve months, then it would certainly ensure Roos has a third year, and maybe even PR gets the taste of coaching again and decides to commit for the long term. If we have some success next year (and the way we are positioning ourselves over this trade period I think that is increasingly likely), Roos might be so encouraged by this that he might once again see himself again as a 5-8 year coach. And that would have to be good for all of us.

When we match that offer, he has the right to reject it and go through the draft.

But why would he? To reunite with that [censored] Skully? Don't think so....

I assume compensatioon offset is the reason why nobody has signed Daniel Cross yet? Or as an unlisted free agent, does he not factor into the offset compensation equation.

What I'd do with compensation would be to scrap it for teams who play finals and then lose a FA the following year. That way, the bottom half of the table has a chance to pick up FA's to close the gap and the "successful" teams have to provide an enivronment that retains players (where this is not always possible for lower teams for myriad reasons). Just my thought.

I don't believe Frawley trade rumours one bit.

They are purely mischievous.

I would have to agree.

It's probably my fault for putting out a 'hypothetical' in the other thread.

Mention a 'slightly' potential scenario on this forum and people take it as gospel....

From GWS Twitter:

GWS Giants

The GIANTS will have picks 1 & 2 in this year's draft after a deal exchanging Dom Tyson & draft selections to@melbournefc. More to come.

Holy [censored]

Boom.

Dom Tyson is a decent get, was pick 3 himself.

Hope we have some good draft picks along with that.

I'm expecting 9 and maybe even their 2nd rounder.

Wow, suppose it depends on the draft picks we get back

Dom Tyson and draft picks for pick 2 done deal just tweeted by gws

Better be a first rounder thrown in if its Tyson and a pick.

I actually rate Tyson quite highly though.

If its this then I would say its a win for us! Fingers crossed.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
