Another Potential Presidential Candidate

Featured Replies

I really cannot understand the logic that supporters are making a big deal about what side of politics anyone pursues

This is a Football Club and i am sure there are members on all levels representing both sides of politics at the polling booth

Alan Stockdale is a Melbourne supporter and that is one box ticked and that is one more than anyone that is not

I really think that until Peter Jackson has made his recommendations i would think every position in our club will be left as it is

This would also include player movements and coaching positions

Unfortunately we need to be patient as we don't need any more bad decisions

Pure speculation but how many 'prominent Melbourne supporters' would Jeff Kennett know better than Alan Stockdale? They are very close.

Ex Melbourne Lord Mayor and former Liberal president, Ron Walker (whose business partner Lloyd Williams is a Hawthorn supporter same as Kennett)! Melbourne is incestuous without even introducing Stockdale into the equation)!

A very successful friend of mine was on the Board of Symex Holdings with him. He speaks very highly of him.

At least you and Canplay were evaluating something useful - his actual performance in roles, rather than partisan politics. Now, combine that with personality assessment and we'll have a mature discussion.

holding breath

and essentially its about human beings, people, not bloody numbers thru a checkout... & not coal slipping up a conveyor belt.

it's the business of passions, of feelings & emotives, & excitement. quick go get stockdale...

Correct 'dee-luded'.

He was Jeff Kennett's Treasurer and left Victoria in a very solid financial condition. He was I believe on the MFC Board around 2000 for a while and some sort of big wig in Maquarie Bank.

So he is experienced in high business*, and also a true believer (in MFC).

PS* Also Federal President of the Liberal Party, so to answer dimmy, above, he has a high profile. Also a very articulate speaker, and smart mover - ex top Barrister (and I don't mean he makes good coffee).

Thanks for that Mono

shaking my head at all the old brighton toffs in this thread talking about politics

so sad and boring

You guys do realize its likely it was Stockdale that approached Kennett?

You know what they say when you 'speculate'?

I highly doubt it, because while Stockdale was concillatory towards Kennett in his comments recently, he did intimate to the report thus:

Stockdale confirmed his former boss had been in contact about Melbourne's predicament, but admitted he had reservations about whether Kennett was the solution to club's woes.

In fact, this quote leads one to believe that Kennett had approached Stockdale and not the other way around. Thankfully, the club approached him aswell and there was no need for him to flirt with a destabilising, costly, in no way AFL-endorsed Kennett ticket which would involve a spilling of the Board.

Everyone gets your position, we get it , YOU don't want Jeff, your no different to wyl , you just post over and over about the same thing.

Another name has come forward, he might be worth a look at.

He has the runs on the board, fierceless, brave, loyal. Ex WW1 ace,so we know he can perform under duress.

he would take it on for peanuts. He doesnt say much, but gets the job done.

I'd rarther geff, than another tail wagger...

The Lefties will be up in arms, but I'd strongly welcome his input.

Don't like his politics but as I've said before, I have few reservations about this. I didn't like his monumental dummy spit around 2001 after Joe got tipped out of office but he is a doer without Kennett's court jester style personality.

If you are after a WW1 ace with vast leadership experience deevoted, I would think this bloke would fit the Melbourne stereotype quite well. ;)

No objections to Stockdale-as long as he doesn't have Kennett involved .

Two big differences-he's not a complete [censored] ,and he has a magnificent set of eyebrows ,which is a pre-requisite for anyone in a position of power .

That's great biff, but let's be bold and courageous and get Jeff

Yeah, let's get Stockdale with his youthful ideologies and super/extraordinary recent successful corporate and governmental experience!

C'mon, who is he ??????????????? nowadays.

He will be 70 in 2015. That should help us bigtime.

What exciting persona and up to date bonafides, can he presently offer the club?

Another nice old, low profile, semi retired, silver haired gentleman with no openly apparent fire in the belly to grab this club by the throat and shake it till something positive finally happens................................................WTF?

Frank Costa says hello.

I think you might find that Alan Stockdale is one of the Melbourne people Kennett will claim have asked him to stand. Perhaps another pollie also. So would not be on opposing tickets....

Only sookies don't want Kennett. Let's(MFC) remain pathetic until we the club totally self destruct. Perhaps will be re badged as the Tassie Demons or we could be the Swans reserves.

Stockdale is a great MFC man, has put a lot of money into the club & he does clearly love it..... However, he's just too busy!! Has been approached before, hasn't committed on a couple of occasions, why would we want another president who is too busy to commit to the role?!? We just has one who was pushed aside because he's been more focused on selling his business than us (don't give me that crap about focuses on the sale for the next 12 months when you've already been working on it for 12 months prior!). I'm sick of the boys club at MFC, it needs a real shake up, & Stockdale, great supporter that he is, is still more or the same. Maybe someone who isn't already committed to 3 paying board member roles elsewhere and actively runs a large corporation could put more time into fixing this club? Just a thought..... I reckon even Eddie with media commitments has more free time to president a club than this bloke. And why such hesitation on his part???

Btw, Stockdale lists Jeff as one of his closest friends. Doubt they'll run opposed!!

I have it on good authority that Stockde is a very very good operator who would be an outstanding President. No idea whether be is running or not but from what I hear from those that know him closely be would be a real asset.

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
