With what appears to be a serious and potentially relatively long term injury to Jack Grimes, and Jack Trengove having a few issues which might lead to a spell at Casey, the club is facing a shortage of official leaders. I am not suggesting replacing either of the co-captains, but perhaps its time for the club to consider filling the apparently vacant spots of vice-captain and deputy vice-captain.

While I truly wish JG a speedy recovery, and JT a speedy return to form, there is an opportunity to reward courage, commitment and on-field leadership by designating Nathan Jones as vice-captain. The deputy spot would be a bit of a raffle, given Clark is out, but I reckon Sylvia (or maybe co-deputy vice-captains and fit the whole leadership group in).

Next week let's see N.Jones (vc).

I'll be surprised if Trengrove is played at Casey - humiliating for a captain... mind you now I just remembered Viney played Green as a substitute when he was captain so I guess anything is possible

He already is.

It's stupid playing him purely because he's captain. He was a total passenger today and it is hurting us.

Due to Grimes injury give him the chance to make amends next week. If he fails he can spend round 8 at Casey.

If Trengove was a real leader he would go to Neeld and say "I don't think I am the best person for the job".

He needs to swallow his pride for the team - If he goes that then Neeld can put him in Casey to find form and in come Jones (about time this guy gets some respect for effort)

The younger players can't look up to Trengove as a captain when he plays like he did today - Jones is one who I see taking Viney, Toumpas etc. under his nuggety wings.

You may be right P_man, I couldn't recall any official announcement, so I was going by the list on Wikipedia.

I suppose it could be seen as humiliating for JT to go to Casey, but better now than later. I thought the appointment of such a young and relatively untried captain was a risk. For one thing, he didn't have the benefit of playing under an experienced captain, and secondly, it puts so much more pressure on him. I'd not give up on him yet as captain, but if he's not in form, how long does ne stay there? When you have such a young captain, the expectations have to be a little different in terms of him being guaranteed a spot.

I think we rushed Trenners back and considering how slow we've taken it with Dawes I don't know why. He should've played at Casey until his form warranted promotion.

I'm a Trengove man and was comfortable (not happy) with them making him captain with Grimes, but he was WOG today and when Grimes went down he needed to step up.

Play him next week V GC, if he doesn't perform I say a stint at Casey is in order.

How about we just leave Jones alone and let him play well without any extra pressure. He is already carrying an entire midfield on his shoulders and looks utterly depressed and exhausted in the post match conference.

He leads by example no matter what his title is because he is a star.

This is why he should be captain! He is an inspiration to the rest.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
