Not sure on Pedersen's pre-season form, but I think he will be given the chance to play the role he was recruited for - "link forward and ruck" - with our other key forwards actually in the team.

I'd also like to see Frawley take on more small forward jobs, I seem to remember him doing this very well in the past. Garland seems too loose on smalls and needs to be able to take on talls (or Gillies should come in for him).

Assuming Trengove and Blease not available. Slightly worried about run from backline, Would love to see JW present strongly in the corridor from time to time to mix things up.

Plenty of permutations, but I just feel from the noises coming out of the club (Neeld, Garland), that Terlich and Matt Jones will play, and probably Pederson. I'd take Sellar over Pederson, but there you go. Neeld mentioned six new faces, and Garland mentioned 8, so that would make it: Dawes, Byrnes, Rodan ... and then Terlich, Jones and one or both of Pederson or Toumpas.

Also, I'd be surprised if Jetta isn't included. From all reports he's done pretty well everything right in the off-season, was close to BOG in the Casey trial and in Renmark, and for the first time has a full pre-season under his belt. Is a "Neeld" type player, nuggety and hard at it, and with decent disposal.

Feel that it's too probably too early for Kent, not forgetting that he was apparently carrying some kind of injury.

I think Dean Kent and Terlich have done enough. Id like to see them in the side.

Watts-McDonald-Dunn is going to be a common lineup this year. We should come up with a new guess each week. What HAS McDonald done?

I don't think Trengove gets up.

Obvious Sellar comes in if Clark or Dawes don't get up. I've gone with the 2 big forwards and Pedersen because I think this is Neeld's preference but I wonder if we could play Clark as back up ruck with just Dawes at the end of the year.

It's really difficult to predict the 6th and 7th defenders, I've gone with Terlich and with Jetta on the bench because he can play both ends. Could understand if they went with Strauss or Nicholson instead.

All the forwards can rotate onto a wing or centre in Sylvia's case.

I really like Kent but with Toumpas and Viney already out there I think we don't want to overload the team with young blokes.

I'm really hoping Blease and McDonald are right to go. Gillies and Tapscott on standby.

I don't like debuting guys as the sub but to me Matt Jones makes sense to come on fresh. Another option would be to start him and take away a bit of x factor from the forwards and bring Blease on fresh as the sub.

With a good run of injuries I can see us building some depth to our forward line and backline depending on the ability of guys to take the next step (Strauss, Nicholson, Jetta, Bail, Tapscott, Gillies, Sellar are examples of guys to come in who have played some decent football). But we don't have the depth in the midfield considering I'm looking at 3 debutants (Viney, Toumpas and M. Jones) to be important players. We need to find a diamond in the rough out of Kent, Taggert, Evans or somewhere!!!

Tricky stuff, some tough decisions for the selectors!

*I reckon based on preseason form, Sellar HAS to get a spot. He's averaged more than 3 goals a game, which is a really good season return if he matches it through the season. Pederson? Not really much to recommend him yet.

*Jetta has been in our best preseason when he's played. He's fit, firing, and Neeld likes him. A shoe in I'd say.

*Like him or not, so has James Magner. Hard and in form. Hard to ignore. Competing with Matt Jones probably, but I think they'll go with AFL experience for round 1.

*Terlich has been mentioned a lot by Neeld and others....have a hunch he'll be there.

*Dean Kent looks like a great prospect, if maybe a bit underdone for a full game. Might depend on Blease being ready.

BRING. IT. ON.

The Round ! 2012 side

B: Joel Macdonald, James Frawley, Clint Bartram

HB: Rohan Bail, Jared Rivers, Colin Garland

C: Jack Watts, Jack Grimes, Nathan Jones

HF: Jack Trengove, Brad Green, Jeremy Howe

F: Aaron Davey, Mitchell Clark, Stefan Martin

Foll: Mark Jamar, Brent Moloney, James Magner

I/C: Matthew Bate, Sam Blease, Jordie McKenzie, Josh Tynan

Emg: Lynden Dunn, James Sellar, Thomas Couch

New: Mitchell Clark (Brisbane Lions), Josh Tynan (Gippsland Power), James Magner (Sandringham)

Those who won't play Round 1 2013 and who may replace them

Bartram - Dunn

Rivers - Tom McDonald/Gillies

Bail - Strauss/Kent

Green - Rodan/Jones

Martin - Dawes/Pedersen/Sellar

Davey - Byrnes/Sylvia

Moloney - Viney

Magner - Toumpas/Jetta

Looking at that not only is it a much stronger side, there's also much better depth with a few of those positions able to be filled by 2 or more new players.

Hogan and 2 elite midfielders and we're quite possibly a useful side again.

Magner can't be picked, he is a rookie, we didn't upgrade a rookie, only Max Gawn long term injured and he is ok in about 2 weeks

I am glad somebody else is paying attention and realised that Magner cannot play.

My thoughts for what they are worth:

  • Sellar ahead of Pederson (and play him up forward not down back where he has been training)
  • M. Jones & Terlich ahead of Nicholson (better disposals)
  • Davey and/or Jetta (based on their VFL and NAB Cup form)
  • Dawes at Full-forward (where Neeld seems to want him) not at CHF where many Demonlanders have placed him!

GO DEES!

I can see a repeat of Moloney, where the minute he gets dropped, he throws the toys out of the cot and wants out.

Baseless and ignorant assertion.

Every time Col has made a mistake in his career, he has worked his butt off to make up for it, and has always taken all of the knocks on him square on the chin, from keyboard warriors and knobs on the street alike.

He's a ripper bloke and loves the club.

Try showing our players some respect.

Again, there are TWO ROOKIE SPOTS OPEN FOR ELEVATION. Gawn LTI listing isn't tied to his fitness - they have to apply to get him off the LTI.

There is plenty of time to elevate Magner before Rd 1.

If he is in the 25 - he will be on the Primary List.

If he isn't then he will most likely be delisted at the end of the year.

EDIT: This is wrong. We have one spot open with an LTI. I forgot about the movement to a 40 man squad last year instead of 38 plus max 2 vets. As we had one last year, it meant we could elevate a rookie straight away.

We can elevate a rookie 11 rounds into the season or in the event of a LTI.

- McKenzie to do a job, otherwise not in the 22 based on talent alone

- Sellars form gets him in over Pedo

- Nicho and Jetta very stiff. Terlich based on form.

- Kent to be subbed off halfway through the third and Toumpa to be let loose

No there isn't, we have a full Primary list.......or we would have done it......there may be one mid season or LTI, but you would think that if there was one we would have elevated, Josh Mahoney said that we weren't going to.....unless he's lying

You are dead right. I forgot about the move to a 40 man primary list but as you say. LTIs can be used to elevate and we have one at the moment.

The delay may have less to do with Magner and more to do with whether there will be another injury in the meantime that leads to a longer layoff than Gawn - and Magner would take that spot.

I do expect Magner to be made available at some point over the next week. Otherwise, I question how the club sees Magner.

I like the team as you proposed but you have listed Sellar twice, once in a forward pocket and once as an interchange. Having said that you have also left out the co-captain Trengove. If you substitute Trengove for Sellar No. 2 then you have a good team. Also, assuming that your centreman is N. Jones, I would have M. Jones as emergency ahead of any of the others you nominated (with the possible exception of Jetta)

I think the Club sees him as a second year rookie, as we have all said previously Neeld takes no prisoners, nobody pointed a gun at either Magner or Couch to stay on as rookies so assume exactly where they are has been explained to them.......Magner filled a hole last year, perhaps Neeld feels he has others to do it as well this year........

I still think he will be elevated however.

Club rookie elevations all had to be nominated by yesterday and Magner wasn't. I am sure that there will be an opportunity as it would be remarkable if we escape injury to the entire 40-man list.

Where are you getting that date from? We have no scope to automatically nominate rookies but we would surely be able to elevate rookies at any time for LTIs.

This morning's papers had the rookie elevations all listed for the Clubs and it was fore-shadowed in the previous morning's papers. We had no option and were reluctant to nominate Magner due to Gawn's imminent recovery and without that [with a full list of 40] we could not elevate a rookie. Most teams were in the same boat however Richmond elevated Petterd! At the moment we have no LTIL players apart from Gawn and Bail who are due to come off it. Blame Misson if you wish to blame anyone!

If we take more than 2 of Clark, Dawes, TMac, Trengove, Blease into the game we will not win. Clark Even rusty will command the best defender plus have others looking about. Blease can be subbed out if he runs out of puff.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
