Sneaky, to catch a crook, think like a crook. IF I am right, that 'missed due to injury' was too throw everyone off the track

Sneaky question, and damn good get if you are on the money.

Doug Heywood

Nice lateral thinking however Doug was dropped for the replay final in '48 to make way for Bobby McKenzie.

Wrecker Leahy meets the criteria but it's obviously someone else.

Hmmmm tough one.

The way it was worded made it seem someone that had a injury and couldnt play. So wrecker Leahy was my favorite.

When that was wrong, I was scratching my head. I keep thinking who got droped through an injury.

Bobby Mckenzie couldnt play because of injury in the drawn GF, Heywood got a game, McKenzie came back in from injury,in the GF replay.Heywood got dropped for McKenzie

Have to wait on the result. Gone to the photo :)

ah Jack our resident mfc expert, I got a question for ya.

When Schwarz was running around in the 2's wearing No44?

There was a young gun at FF. Chris Farrell, whatever happened to him?

I thought he and the ox were about par,but he disappeard off my radar.

If my memory is correct he wore No35 in the 2's.

According to Demonwiki:-

Chris Farrell

DOB: 26 March 1970

Games: 0

Goals: 0

From: Assumption College

191cm centre half-forward who was recruited in 1988 and remained on the list through 1991 but failed to play a senior game. Wore number 35 in 1990 and 1991.

Did you ever see him playing in the twos? he looked the goods. The OX was running aroung with his GI haircut. I looked we have got 2 gun forwards on our hands. Schwarz we all know, Farrell looked every bit as good. Perhaps training or studies, was all too much and he quit.?

My memory is a bit hazy but these reserves games I watched, was probably their 1st season on our list. For a talenetd footballer, I always wondered

what happened to him.If you dont know, I will die wondering :)

McKenzie missed the draw through suspension.

I'll accept your word on that. I'll stick with my theory, that Mckenzie came back for the replay at the cost of Heywoods spot.

Wiki has Heywood out, with Macca back after injury. We'll have to wait on the judges descsion, if I got it right .

Len Mann played in the 1960 premiership and was at the club in 1964. Not sure if he was injured that year but played very few games and definitely didn't play in the grand final.

Anyway, he's my guess.

Good guess. just cant confirm if he was injured, every chance he was.

Interesting point Deevoted, the publication I was relying on - '125 Years of the Melbourne Demons' by Greg Hobbs clearly states that McKenzie was serving suspension yet after stingrays post I checked 'The Grand Old Flag' by Lynda Carroll and she states that he was injured.

If that is correct I owe you an apology.

Perhaps Jack or someone else may be able to shed some light.

two good books there and are part of the selection I have been using for my clues...

have also been using Heroes - Garrie Hutchinson

100 years of football - the story of the melbourne football clun 1858-1958 E.C.H. Taylor

as well as some research on demonwiki.

Heroes is a wonderful publication however it sheds no light in the comments on Bobby.

I was lucky enough to attend the Heroes dinner, sensational evening. Surrounded by legends of our great footy club.

No, Bob McKenzie missed the 1954 GF V Footscray because of suspension. (He had a fist fight with North Melbourne's Percy Johnson in the preliminary final). He did NOT miss playing in the1948 GF draw V Essendon because of suspension. He was out injured.

And you should know Bobby!

Don't forget however, that you did play in another grand final in 1955 when we beat the Pies therefore giving you the distinction of playing in a premiership in your first and last seasons at the club.

Lets not get into apologies, not everything written are the real facts. (looking at Gasoline Wilson here)

The books you guys are using for references, you would think, have been thoroughly researched before going to print.

I still liked by theory,it had a devious twist to it. I vote that it should be correct, even though our "QM" stated none correct yet.

Before my time, I never knew you had a mean streak. Nothing like a good stouse to relive some tension.

I hope it was worth it.

Not like Greg Hobbs to be making basic errors particularly when writing about an individual club. One of the better footy journos over the years.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w
