As rpfc pointed out above, Adrian Anderson was quoted by Jon Pierik in the Age - Saints in the dark over Goddard plans:-

''We confirm that the compensation formula will produce a points rating for players based on two factors:

1) new contract of the free agent and

2) age of the free agent.

''Draft picks will be allocated to clubs based on the net total points for free agents lost and gained during the transfer period. Draft picks will be allocated to one of five places: first round, end first round, second round, end of second round and third round.''

The criteria are very simple in the case of the compo for Moloney/Byrnes. They are both of similar age and therefore the only aspect that comes into play between Moloney/Byrnes on the matter of compensation is what they are going to be paid and the length of their contracts.

I only know that they both got 2 years.

Port Adelaide apparently believe that the longer the contract - the bigger the compensation (Pearce got 4 years at Freo) but we will see.

Why hasn't the AFL released the criteria for awarding picks and I mean the real detail? In other words how many dollars change the level of compo. What is $500k worth, what is $1m worth, what is $1.5m and so on.

It is all a big secret.

Byrnes worth nothing to Cats in compo, somehow negates all of Moloney's compo to us. How did that happen? What were the criteria used to come to that decision? Surely deducting Byrnes from Moloney leaves a balance in our favour. How is it when that is added to Rivers you still get a single pick at the worst band of compo. How are Young and Murphy only worth pick 66. Young would be on very good money to leave the Hawks.

The AFL's lack of transparency in these types of decisions, leaves it open to criticism and they couldn't care less. If the media weren't up their arse, the real questions would be asked.

If you think about that is the club's fault. I think by the end most of us knew that Moloney's compensation would be negated by acquiring Byrnes. We should have done what Port Adelaide have done and actually thought about it and decided to trade for Byrnes instead of using free agency.

No UFAs were traded. Monfries was RFA. The distinction matters because it gives the home club some rights to hold the player.

UFA has none. I believe that it was not possible to trade for Byrnes.
