Free Agency compensation picks

Ok. My understanding is should any player leave your club or join then the League will apply a vlue to that loss/gain and when the dust settles ascribe a compensatory pick.

Two questions:

When are these picks used ? I.e. The current draft or next years ? I understand also they arent bankable.

Other question:

If a club has an overall benefit due to FA movements are they docked ? OR is it only applicable to teams that lose out ?

cheers

They cannot be banked and have to be used in the upcoming draft, don't know how they figure out what pick to give though.

So some round 1 compensations picks could interfere with our pick 12/13?

We might not get anything if we sign a few FAs of our own...

If Moloney would like to go I would prefer we trade him to the team by threatening to match his offer and keep him.

But they may just say 'screw it, we will see you in the draft Brent' and they may get him that way.

Maybe more likely, 2nd Rnd or 3rd Rnd picks would be impacted.

I don't think their will be many or any top 15 picks unless Collingwood get one for Cloke.

What if Collingwood get awarded Pick 1 ??? What IF they get awarded 2 Picks.

Doesn't work that way, it's tied to their finishing position on the ladder (as were ours, Geelong, Dogs etc.) so the earliest pick they will get will be past our 2 compo picks.

I don't like the idea of a comprised draft with priorty and compensations picks. 18 clubs should mean 18picks per round. Better to keep it simple.

If Cloke leaves Collingwood...Cloke will be getting approx 1mil over 5years.

Would it be fair for the AFL to hand the new clubs first round draft pick to Collingwood as compenstation? Based on what he will be getting paid etc.

Wow, I hope thats right. Otherwise we'll see top teams doing this, allowing surplus players go to Rort the Draft.

Here's a good article from The Age that clarifies a few concerns.

These are compensation picks for the loss/gain of free agents. The picks are in addition to the picks we would normally get and are doled out by the AFL (No-one has to use their normal/standard draft picks)

They can't be banked (as has been previously mentioned)

The highest compensation possible is a first round pick, taken after the clubs normal pick (based on finishing position)

Yes that's a good article thanks. Interesting that the lowest compensation is a 3rd round pick - that could be quite a good deal in some cases.

Any chance we could get picks 3,4,5 if beamer (longer service, reigning bnf and top 5 finishes, big $$) and rivers (long service, high bnf finishes) and bate (long service) all go elsewhere?

Bloody interesting question.

My opinion:

I don't think they will be bundled together.

But, I think when the dust settles after FA the AFL will give picks based on the 'net loss' of players and their worth.

ie. Gain 2 players at the 3rd band and lost 3 players (2 at 2nd band, 1 at the 3rd band) - Gain one pick at the first band (equation done using a 'points' system of 5 for the first band and 1 for the last band).

Bloody interesting question.

October 19, 5pm - Close to Restricted Free Agency Offer and Unrestricted Free Agency Period.

October 26, 2pm - End of Trade Period.

Wonder when the compensation picks will be awarded - they'd have to be super-quick if the picks were to be tradable.

I'm lead to believe we will know by the Monday morning giving us the 5 days to trade them. Basically this is why trade week was extended to deal with FA's.

You are a smart man and exactly our strategy - why we have left so many free agents on the table. This is not to say we wont offer them deals we just have to wait for the interest. However, at this stage interest has been good but all positions are fluid and quickly changeable.

The key point is Free agency benefits lower finishing sides. :o

Bet you never will guess who is the lowest finishing side with free agents.

All of the info out from the AFL has been vague about the vlaue of picks that will be given but I have come up with a rough theory to work out what pick(s) clubs will get for FA.

rpfc's idea of how it will work:

There are 5 bands of compensation - from mid-1st round to 3rd round. I will give the highest band 5 points and the lowest 1 point.

If your team loses 3 players that earns you 3 2nd band picks you will 'earn' 12 points.

If your team signs 2 players at the 1st band they will 'lose' 10 points.

Leaving them with 2 'net' points one draft pick at the 4th band.

It must stay based on points and not on how many 'net' players a team has.

So if a team 'earns' 12 points and sign no FAs then perhaps you can just award based on how many players lost (3 picks for 3 players), but what if you have signed one player but have 11 points left over?

Would you get 2 1st band picks and a 5th band pick for the 'net' loss of two players?

Sorry, this stuff is complicated...

You only receive compensation if you lose more players than you gain. For instance Collingwood could lose Cloke and then sign Bate as a Free Agent and wouldn't be rewarded with any compensation

Err - the relative value of the players is considered too.

His original club will receive a compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula to apply where clubs lose more free agents than they gain in any single transfer period.

Critically, the AFL will award a club ''net'' compensation for losing or gaining a free agent player. Thus, if St Kilda lost Brendon Goddard, but gained another player, the compensation would be based on the difference between the players.

If the player gained is judged to be at the same level to the one lost, the relevant club would receive nothing.

The Age article is more recent and has the input of "The AFL's head of game development, Andrew Dillon."

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
