Terry Wallace on our trading/drafting

I just saw Terry Wallet-I-mean-Wallace's analysis of the Demon's draft choices since Cale Morton.

He did say that he could have a go about it but he 'didnt want to be nasty'.

He created a side of players we 'should have' with hindsight picked and I must say its was a cracker.

Best part was the fact that he thinks we can turn it around with our draft and trading this week. Caddy should be on the radar as a trade for pick 13 and Moloney/Sylvia, with an agreement that the Suns wont force us to activate early for Viney who he thinks is a second round pick at this stage. Plus pick 4 and a move on Cloke we could turn it around was the concensus.

I'll listen to Terry Wallace's drafting tips right after I finish my book on Hitler's Advice for World Peace.

lol HINDSIGHT we could all come up with what he said you could also do it with every team in the comp

What was the list he came up with our of curiosity?

Tell me about it. Listing a long list of players or a team that were looked over is the most pointless exercise anyone can do.

The official Easiest Job In The World is being a retired player/coach in the media.

You never had to decide anything. Never have to make a hard call or risk anything.

You can just wax on about what club X "should have" done or what player Y "shouldn't have" done.

You don't have to do any research, homework, or practice.

The only thing you're accountable for are your weekly tips.

I like this idea....

I like Wallace and greatly respect his footy acumen.

Never been directly associated with a premiership, overly tactical (out of balance with being strategic) and a terrible revisionist in my opinion.

Do you? Sylvia and pick 13 for Caddy. Did you see Caddy play today? 11 possies and not much better last few games. If we had any chance to get him I would offer some of our Queensland players, Spencer, Petterd and Bail. They have no rucks other than Smith and could be desperate for someone of Spencer's size.

Terry Who?

Dont like this bloke and the content of his peices or opinion

Never been directly associated with a premiership,

How is being a triple premiership player not "directly associated"?

Wasn't he a premiership player with Hawthorn?

D'oh! I meant as a coach - butchered Footscrays list and then Richmond's.

This is the man who was in charge of a recruiting team that took Richard Tambling over Franklin?

Move on.

This old chestnut..?

Didn't realise Wallace was in charge of recruitment and list management - I was under the impression he was the head coach.

Surely the coach decides what type of players he wants and the direction the club should take, but isn't responsible for judging the ability of these picks in isolation.

The recruiting manager should shoulder the blame for this one.

First time I've seen Caddy live today. Has impressed in patches on TV but I must say I was a bit 'meh' about him today.

Wouldn't be overly concerned if he wasn't on our radar.

I think people can be overly dismissive of these types of exercises. Sure its all hindsight, but I think it's beyond reproach that you can establish a pattern of misses in our drafting that is more than worthy of scrutiny.

We have simply botched things up too many times to not have this area of our FD held to account.

Thank God BP is gone but the heat is right on Viney and whoever is making the big calls this time. You only had to look at Harley Bennell today to realize that you must do everything possible to get a rolled gold gun with a top 3 draft pick.

Half right. If the coach thinks they are close to a flag, then instructions to the recruiters are surely modified in favour of developed players.

Wallace, twice, was proven to be further from a winning combo than he was.

Just got home from the Presidents lunch and those who feel we are interested in Caddy will be happy to know the club are definitely keen on him. Some of his family were guests there today and mentioned the club has let him know we are interested.

Great news.

Not the best performance from him today, but he definitely has some of what we need and will improve into a consistent performer based on what I've seen previously and heard about him.

Don't worry. I'm sure with our development he will be a gun

Definitely, but to list a team simply by going through picks after ours and slotting in the best player from the remainder of the draft is a fruitless exercise. For example, we might have stuffed up pick 19, and someone will say 'and you overlooked player X' who was actually taken at pick 50 meaning he was obviously not highly rated and everyone overlooked him. That was what I was referring to and it could be done to any club in the competition. But by all means go through and scrutinise our selections, just not in that way.

Don't worry. I'm sure with our development he will be a gun

I get the sarcasm, but I really do have faith in our ability to effectively develop players now.

Blease looks to be a bit better every week, and he seems to be maturing.

Tommy McDonald is great value for a late pick in spite of his

Tapscott showed signs of it starting to click for him.

Watts has shown serious improvement this year.

Ditto Morton - as bad as some may think he has been, he has shown some serious improvement from the last few seasons.

The development thing is like an old joke that's not really relevant now.

Mind you, that's faith, but not blind faith.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
