Lol... That old chestnut again

It's an interesting chestnut too!

But while I agree that Magner won't be at the core of the flag winning team (nearly said a term some on here would slap me for...) there are plenty of periphery spots that a Magner could definitely fulfill.

You don't win a flag with 22 'stars.'

I would happy to have 6 incredibly good players (3 of those mids) and surround them with 'Magners' of varying heights.

I think Couch will be everything that Magner is. Just dosn't have as much trade value.

Wow, who would trade for one of our battlers, currently playing at Casey, we are 16th with two wins.

What are you going to do with this Pick 47 that has so much value?

Get another kid?

I mean I would trot out the old adage about having 'a bird in the hand worth more than two in the bush,' but this isn't even that - it's like 'a bird in the hand is worth as much as the egg that's on the ground near the bush that could end up being a similar bird or some sort of reptile-like creature that is ugly and scares the cat'...

I think Somerset Maugham coined that one...

Olisik, you're using the scattershot method in terms of creating threads, and with a very low percentage of hitting a target...

Upgrade our round 3 pick perhaps

Or late round 2 pick for our round 3 + magner

Just to clarify, are you talking about Magner here?

Battler playing at Casey? Hasn't played at Casey all year.

Most threads these days ends up having the bulls and the bears.

The ones who want to be aggressive in the trade game and try to get the best, then you got the ones who like to be conservative and stick with what we have.

At the moment I am in the first group as we are ranked 16th with 2 wins. If we were higher up the ladder then maybe I would be the latter but at the end of the day, Magner is a player in a terrible team who plays the same role as half a dozen other players in the current team and I think our list needs a realistic overhaul.

I think there's a 3rd group of: Don't want to trade the best we have, want to be aggressive in trade time, realize we have a fair bit of cash and picks to make good deals with and are henceforth in a relatively strong position to make things happen.

I wouldn't rate Magner as being 'the best we have'

We need to put players on the table who can perform but we can do without. I see Magner as being one of those.

Cash is good for free-agents.

Picks are good for getting players like Beams and Co

Magners are good for upgrading picks to get better quality in the draft. Could even be good to help score us an u17 as GWS need some bigger bodies.

For once Bluey is right. Anyone who thinks Magner has some sort of trade value is absolutely deluded.

Just like people who thought drafting Junior Mac were deluded?

GWS would jump on a player like Magner. Good body, low cost and has quite a few years in him.

You seem to think that if you keep posting the same crap...that eventualy it'll be correct.

Teams need players like Magner. They show heart, work ethic and a willingness to succeed. This breeds a good culture, you know, the thing melbourne's been lacking for god knows how long.

Your belief that if we draft 4 mids, we need to delist 4 mids is laughable. You honestly think that Melbourne's balance within our list is perfect do you?

How about we get rid of the 4 worst players we can....and bring in the best 4 we can....that'd be a start!

Oh and this talk about matching Moloney's offer and then trading him....i'm pretty sure that under free agency we get compensated for any player that moves to a different club under the same guide lines as when GCS and GWS came in. If we don't want to match the money for Moloney...let him walk and receive afl compo for him.

Actually he's not right at all, Magner hasn't even played at Casey.

Sounds like a player Melbourne would be interested in.

Didn't say Magner was the best we have.

But I don't like posters that try and summarize everyone and put people into 2 groups.

Reality is somewhere inbetween. I want an active offseason and trade period where we draft some great young talent, trade for a good player or 2, and maybe even pick up a free agent, all while doing some list trimming.

But I don't want a reactionary offseason where we do rash things that are a big gamble.

Lawrence also shows heart, hard work and ethic. Lets keep him to.

We need results, not just heart, hard work and ethic. We have always have had these types of players and always will.

We are 16th for a reason and we have as much heart as any other club.

I am with you, few good mids from the draft, maybe pick up a Cloke or Goddard with our spare cash.

I think that if we want to trade players then these players need to

A: Be performing reasonably well

B: We can lose them and not take a big hit.

I think Magner falls into this category. Like everyone else I would prefer to use the Bates, Mortons, Bennells and Dunns but unfortunately they do not satisfy the 'A' part of the above.

Oh i'm sorry i hadn't realised that Lawrence had played every game of the season in the seniors except the last one...how silly of me.

Lawrence and Magner = chalk and cheese

Don't let that get in the way of your cool story

A quick perusal of the first 2 pages of this forum offer up the following thread titles:

Brendon Goddard

Trade Magner

If Melbourne traded Trengove

Should Nathan Jones be captain in 2013

Trade Jamar

Would you let Jack Viney go to GWS! (sic)

Chappy, culture personified!

Is this Demonland or Bay 13?

Seeing as you ignored the other part of my post...i'm going to assume that you think Melbourne currently has a perfectly balanced list.

Did you just change your criteria from having 'heart, hard work and ethic', to 'playing every game of the seniors exept one?' as your argument to keeping Magner?

Did you want to add anything else to this criteria before I bother responding or will you just change it again when i do.

Seeing as you ignored the other part of my post...i'm going to assume that you think Melbourne currently has a perfectly balanced list.

I am sure the list management team has a criteria that they need to follow in terms of balancing it. Not perfect but as close to as possible that they could probably have gotten it.

Here are 2 options for making room on our list, one includes Magner. (Ignoring Green as he is on Vets list)

Option 1

Delist - Bennell, Lawrence, Spencer, Petterd

Option 2

Delist - Lawrence, Spencer, Petterd, Bennell

Trade - Magner,

Option 1 we keep Magner

Option 2 we end up keeping Evans, and upgrading a pick

List management may think that Evans could be a better fit going forward, though no other teams are willing to take him and we get to upgrade a pick.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
