Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Trade Magner

Well, seeing Moloney, Magner and Couch have been played a lot as forwards, and Trengove on the wing, I don't see the problem mate.

Wing is classified as a mid

So you think we draft say....Viney, Wines and Toumpas as mids

Moloney Couch and Magner to play as forwards

Petterd, Dunn and Jetta to delist for example?

Honestly that makes a bit of sence, though I think the cut will be balanced, we will need to cut players who perform a combination of roles. It is better we trade them to get value and so that they can continue there career

FFS... Someone just go through our list and start a thread for EVERYONE please...

This is getting ridiculous.

OK. Lets trade Clark and Jones, because they are our best players.

Unbelievable, why wouldnt you suggest Morton or Bate or Dunn?

FFS why dont we trade Watts Clark Jones Howe Blease Grimes or even anyone who has shown some talent this year just so we can maybe get some good draft picks and draft a brand new team?

Thats already been suggested. Don't think we would get much for Dunn. Bate maybe a pick upgrade? Morton....hmmm its hard to say.

Thought I would put Magners name in the mix. He is a solid support player though not a game breaker.

Evans will probably go.

No he probably won't. Did you see what he did in his first game back last week? Did you see his first AFL game last year? We need talent and he has it.

A Shining light this year, may not have a long term future when our midfield is developed but for now we need his grunt and determination.

B Zero value, we would be very lucky if we got a 2nd round pick for him. Most likely we would get 3rd rounder, and those ones are lotteries.

He's a cheap player on our list, a seasoned body, and he creates competition for spots (as he has with Couch). Much more value keeping him on.

Some truly amazing posting going on here at the moment.

I just don't see us drafting in say 4 mids and then cutting 4 mids.

We'll draft in mids no doubt, and probably trade a pick or two, but we'll cut the players that aren't having an impact, simple as that.

Id have no problem delisting Dunn to make room for 4 new mids, same goes for Bate and Morton. They have had plenty of chances and they just havent made the cut, thanks for your time but goodbye.

I get what you're saying. But wont it work both ways?

Moloney says I'm going to Carlton because they're offering me 350K over 2 years. We say, well we can match that offer but if you really want to go then we'll trade you?

Yeah, it is known as a 'sign and trade' in US sports. Sign him and then trade him to the team that gave him the contract. It's a way of maximizing the value of RFA. But beware, if that club is nefarious (or not THAT interested) they may walk away leaving you with the bloated contract and an unhappy player.

We need to recruit players who can play similair roles to Bate, Dunn and Morton if thats the case to maintain balance.

Cheers mate, I was wondering how those types of scenarios might work?

As you said, it does sound like it has it's risks though.

No I am not. Are you one of those on here who wanted Jones gone a couple of years ago? Plenty did. He will win the B& F this year.

Evans is a rookie who can play but has been injured. Have you seen him play a game?

I honestly dont see how thats possible though.

Example

Freo: we ll pay you 350 per year

Melb: we ll pay you 350 per year

Freo Recruiting: Hmmm pay 360 a year or pay 350 year and give up a 2nd rounder. Think the extra 10k is worth it

Melb: 360 a year

Freo: 400k a year

Melb: 400k a year

Freo: 450 a year

Melb: 450 a year (overs)

A: Freo will just keep going higher to make us pay overs and to avoid having to give something to Melbourne

B: Melb will just let him go as they dont want to pay overs

I have seen him play and I think he is a gun. He can actually turn a game around and I admit it.

That said how many games has he had in the last 2 years? The guy is worse then Jurrah in terms of injuries.

I would rather have someone fit, who isn't as good but can at least get on the park and improve.

Remmeber, every week Evans is injured is another week we could have someone else on our list improving.

No we dont, with Trengove Jones Howe Blease Grimes Moloney Mckenzie Sylvia all of which who can rotate through the midfield/forward then, then add in Viney Toumpass Wines or whoever into that mix then we dont need Bate, Dunn or Morton to keep a balance, they are weighing us down atm

I forgot about Howe, though his versatility makes it more feasible.

Dunn, Bate and Morton are medium talls while Viney Wines and Toumpas are more grunt mids. (Not sure on Toumpas's height)

They are different types of players though if guys like Howe and maybe Garland get a bit more flexibility I guess they can fill the gap.

But then if they go down injured...

I feel if i answer your last line we would begin to go off track.

My point is that I think there are others in line before we should look at trading magner

Neeld mentioned the extra value in a player like Magner when we first got him in that he is a great player to have at training for the younger players.

Obviously this is not the sole consideration but it is a consideration on top of his playing ability.

I'm sure Melbourne will have a value that they wouldn't be willing to go over, as would clubs that may be after him.

If Freo (for example) offered him more then what Melbourne are willing to offer then yeah we let him go. But if they're not willing to go over our amount but still want him then we can trade so they can keep him on their terms.

I'm not saying it doesn't make things more difficult for Melbourne. Clearly it does. But there's still value there.

If we need better mids and we believe Magner is expendable in a bottom quartile midfield then guess what?........lets not rookie him again.

And trade value.....FMD..... Dime a dozen hard at it with a lack of class is not worth a 2nd round pick.......not even worth a 3rd or 4th picks

Honestly some posters have a basic clue about trading.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
