Sadly, this is all I look forward to most weeks this season, but alas...

Guessing on injuries, and going on having watched Casey's game yesterday, I would think:

IN:

Spencer, Morton, Gysberts, Moloney (just)

OUT:

Jamar (thigh), Bennell (ACL), Grimes (ankle), Strauss

Not sure where Watts and Tappy are at, so left them out for now. Strauss out mainly due to having to play a whole game when initially a sub and may struggle in the conditions at Darwin given he wouldn't have a full fitness base as yet. I would guess Magner would get another week off rather than being subjected to the sapping game coming up.

Really hope Petterd is left in, thought his intent was good yesterday, just needs to get more in tune with our setups etc.

In: Spencer, three best MFC players for Casey yesterday (or Watts if fit).

Out: Jamar, Bennell, Grimes, Strauss

Spencer has to replace Jamar, unfortunately (although Spencer did look OK from what I saw of the Casey game).

Replace Bennell, Grimes and Strauss with whoever our best three were from Casey yesterday. Strauss needs match fitness, he looked so incredibly out of it yesterday. Doesn't really deserve his spot until he shows form at Casey.

Not quite sure Jetta is fit enough yet, especially for a game in Darwin.

Moloney's game was borderline, but combined with his senior body (important for the upcoming conditions), he should just get a game, but who would have thought you wouldn't pick him hey Jose....

- I'd love to see Gysberts get a game, but I feel like he's still got a bit of work to do before making the jump.

Physical development maybe the biggest factor.

- Fitzpatrick also, but I think he needs to have some really dominant games to make the jump.

- Cook still a fair way off, but there's no shame in that at his stage of development.

- Moloney will have to do more to get back in the 1s.

I think everyone else at AFL level did just enough to keep their spot in a tough game to run out due to an injury depleted bench.

At this stage of the season and with our injury list, minimal changes and careful injury management will be paramount.

I reckon Gys is probably ahead of Jetta though as far as games under his belt, wouldn't think Nev would have enough in the tank yet for a game in Darwin conditions.

Agree about the rest though, even Beamer, only reason I had him as an in is he's a fitter senior player who will last in this energy sapping game, and we already have alot of under done players in due to injuries etc.

We need Jetta in ASAP. Exactly what we need in our midfield at the moment. Incredibly evasive, disposal looked good yesterday, good spread and we know he has the prerequisite grunt.

From memory, Nev Jetta produced one of if not his best game for the club in one of the Darwin games. I'm a big believer in certain players playing well on certain tracks (and against certain clubs). If he performed at Casey yesterday as has been mentioned I wouldn't hesitate to bring Nev in.

Jetta also traditionally wheels around and advances the ball quickly - something we need to continue to do.

When we get stagnant, we are in a lot of trouble.

Fitness permitting.

If he's not fit enough, I'd agree that he shouldn't be selected.

That's up to Misson and the fitness staff to decide.

He did.

He starred that day.

I'd be wrapped if Mission etc thought he'd get through fine and could play! Love the Jet!

How long has he been back for though?

This wasn't his first week back, was it?

In: Watts, Morton, Fitzpatrick

Out: Jamar, Bennell, Grimes (if ankle is dodgy)

Watts is an obvious in, and the FD said he would only be out for the one week.

Morton really stood up when he needed to yesterday and his contested work was fine.

Fitzpatrick gives much more around the ground than Spencer, and the PA ruck unit looks pretty shonky, so he won't be badly outmatched when he spells Martin.

The outs are all forced ones obviously. Jamar and Bennell are certain to miss while Grimes looked pretty proppy on that leg.

Of the other contenders from Casey, I just can't see any of them coming in yet. Jetta started well and had some glimpses of class through the game, but it wasn't a sustained effort, and Gysberts I don't think is quite ready fitness-wise.

Either first or second week back I think, not 100% tho... KC might know more if he's around... Or someone with more time could have a look at the last few Casey MFC player reports to see if he's on there?

2 weeks back. I think he played a half last week. From what we saw this weekend I don't think he's there yet.

Watching the TV replay, I thought the MRP might have a look at Bail's forearm to the head of a Freo player (uncertain who) while the ball was oob. Didn't look to be very forceful, but it attracted the attention of a few Freo players. Did anyone else notice it?

I know Spencer was BOG but surely Martin is still a better option as first ruck and therefore we are looking at a second ruck/ forward type and Fitzpatrick has Spencer covered in that role. Therefore I'd rather Fitzy in.

Pretty much what I'm saying is Martin (ruck) + Fitzpatrick (Forward/Ruck) is a better combination than Spencer (ruck) + Martin (forward/ruck).

Jetta for Bennell seems a straight forward change given we need to give Jetta a few more goes then if Grimes is out you have to decide who has earnt a recall more - Gysberts or Morton.

I'd go with that.

On a side note, not sure we're going to have to worry about who's going to play on Travis Boak ...

I was going to say bring Pencil in but I tend to agree with you about Fitzpatrick Bring him in as the mobile tall and let him play the majority of the game down forward. Only problem is Stef looks like he needs a rest after 3 minutes of rucking.

Gotta love teams getting sprung trying to speak to other players. I wonder how the cats will spin their way out of answering any questions.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
