    Apparently North has the most 10 goal losses over the last couple of years, surprisingly we're about the 4th or 5th worst team, I expected us to be bottom two.

    Disagree. Admittedly, I don't like the term 'honorable loss'. It gives the impression that you're content and taking pride in losing. But under certain circumstances losing isn't always the end of the world. Take the roos and freo on the weekend for example. Supporters of those respective sides would be feeling very differently about their teams loss, and rightly so. Freo had a crack against a quality opposition, but the better team won. North may have well not even turned up, and it's that kind of effort that is unacceptable.

    Melbourne are nowhere near the most talented side, (at the moment anyway), but there is never an excuse for a lack of effort.

    Well, that sounds pathetic and disgusting doesn't it?

    And can we can the semantics over "honourable losses."

    We all mean the same thing - there can be merit in losses, we all prefer to see wins but we would prefer to see merit in a loss than annihilation.

    Argument over.

    I'm sorry RPFC, I didn't follow the 'honourable losses' argument because I was interested, I just responded to the post about 10+ goal losses. I take it your comment was 'tongue in cheek'? (Bit slow on the uptake today)

    I know I'm going to cop it for this but imho our win/loss ratio is largely irrelevent this year, just as long as we get the odd win to keep the masses happy. This year is about setting the foundations for the future and ensuring the right behaviours are being followed. I heard Neeld explain why Collingwood is successful as a club, and it's because as soon as you walk in the door you know what the expectations are and if you don't achieve them then you're quickly left behind.

    I am truly excited about our future and feel free to laugh at me for it, I don't care.

    I was just saying that NM's performance has been 'pathetic and disgusting' but that no-one seems to want to come out and say that the Shinboner Spirit is as relevant as Ansett Airlines. That was my only point, really.

    there is a reason the Kangas are the side people talk about when they slag us both and say that we should merge!

    I'd say they cop it pretty hard from the media too, maybe not to the level we have this year though.

    It frustrates me the way some Dees fans say North should pack up and move north or disband.

    We are not too far away from being in the same position.

    This will be the story of this year - "setting the foundations for the future and ensuring the right behaviours are being followed". That's the absolute priority.

    And that's exactly the right way to go about it. That's what we needed Neeld for.

    I think Essendon's fixture, which has been soft so far, explains why they were equal first. Once they start playing some likely finalists I wouldn't be surprised if they slide down the ladder and finish with a ranking equal or lower than teams we beat in 2010/2011

    I said it earlier Essendon are a bunch of pretenders and I agree they will fall on their ass when they play a decent side.

    Having said that i was at the other game and sang the club song just as hard as I have for any other win it was a great relief.

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.  They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
