THE CONTRACTS THREAD [with updates]

A question regarding Dawes' contract:

Did the trade nullify the contract that he was previously on with Collingwood, and as such did he sign a brand new contract with us? Or will he get the terms that were in his Collingwood contract from the MFC for 2013, and then have a new contract extension that will begin when his Collingwood contract expires?

I know the wording of that question is awkward, but I think it's easy enough to understand...

I will be very happily surprised if there are any offers for Davey next year.

With 8 years of service I thought that the only difference between UFA and RFA was being in the top 25% of earners at the club. If either Sylvia or Davey are in that bracket they'll be RFA, otherwise UFA. Isn't that how it works?

All 10+ year players will be UFA?

It will be interesting to see what sort of seasons Watts and Sylvia have in 2013. Both coming out of contract and both not really living up to expectations at present. What's the bet Sylvia produces a ripping year heading towards UFA status?

But Watts is the more interesting one. Very unusual that a club isn't doing all it can to tie up it's number 1 draft pick to a long term deal. But that's where he's at I guess.

I have spoken to Neeld personally about this and his view was Hardwick saw Clarkson go through 'hell' by not culling when he first got to Hawthorn and therefore decided to go hard first year. Neeld said he could have done this first year but wanted to give players an opportunity. I think halfway through last year he was regretting that decision as he was let down badly by certain players and their level of commitment and ability.

I agree, he could have done it before our Christmas break in 2011. But only remove maybe 3 at the time.

Now he has all the first hand knowledge he needs to go to work. He just needs our understanding, & the time required to get things ship shape.

Ok, bear with me here. It can get convoluted.

Sylvia is UFA because he was 'RFA' at the end of 2011 when he signed on for two years. Therefore he will be UFA after his tenth year - 2013.

Davey signed a 4 year deal which means he has never had his 'RFA contract' and therefore will be a RFA.

Outside of that small caveat any one who has been at a club for 8 years or longer is OOC and not paid in the top 25% is an UFA.

Thanks. I guess convoluted is par for the course with AFLHQ.

What happens if contracts aren't signed by list lodgement next week?

I don't believe it is the end of it.

We can re-sign or they can go into one of the drafts.

In fact I am sure of it. Some players will go into the draft but be on that 'list' for lodgement.

If not, they are delisted prior to that and qualify for Delisted FA.

Along with Jurrah, Moloney, Green and Rivers ... I would add Bail and Petterd to that list for a total of 11 departures.

Bartram will surive I think, as will Strauss and Jetta.

Why save a spot for a pre-season pick? Theres no need. If we want an uncontracted players we can just sign them as they become FA once delisted.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season. Under cloudy but calm conditions for Casey Fields, the home side, wearing the old Springvale guernsey as a mark of res

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
