THE HEAT IS ON by the Oracle

The forecast for the coming days in Melbourne is that the place is warming up. Friday will be hot and sunny and likewise for Saturday with a maximum temperature predicted of 29 degrees with a possible late shower.

Not only that but the heat is well and truly on at the Melbourne Football Club because nothing else will be acceptable for this week's season opener and the coaching debut of Mark Neeld than a big win over the Brisbane Lions.

The Demons had a lacklustre 2011 after promising so much late the year before and they failed to deliver. Instead, they fell in a disappointing heap during the last couple of months of the home and away season as things turned ugly with the sacking of coach Dean Bailey attended by rumours of internal divisions.

However, there was one area where the team excelled during the year and that was in MCG home matches against clubs from interstate. They drew their opening encounter against the Swans, beat the Lions a fortnight later and had some monster victories against the likes of Adelaide and Fremantle at the home of football.

Consequently, it must be considered a bonanza for the Melbourne Football Club to be handed a round 1 home game against Brisbane who finished 15th last year and who start without the services of their forward line playmaker in Jonathan Brown against the club that managed to steal the Lions' other key forward Mitch Clark from under their noses during the off season.

In turn, Clark will have a pivotal role in his first game for his adopted club. Having been presented with Jimmy Stynes' famous number 11, Clark will undoubtedly feel the sense of occasion wearing the champion Demon's guernsey into battle on an emotional afternoon in which the fans will have the opportunity to applaud their fallen hero's exploits in the week following his funeral.

And after that, they will be hoping to applaud the new generation of heroes in the cauldron of their home ground.

Why not?

The Demons have had a tough pre-season with the fallout from the departure of Tom Scully, the reconstruction of the football department with a new coach and a number of new assistants and other key personnel, the changes of leadership at the top both on and off the field, injuries, the Liam Jurrah saga, the controversy over the development of Jack Watts and the passing of the great Jimmy Stynes.

These Demons must be used to the heat by now!

THE HARDEST TEAM TO BEAT

Rookie coach Mark Neeld has been working over the summer in an attempt to make Melbourne a harder team to play against and the reason is obvious.

The feeling in the football fraternity is that the Demons are fragile and this was borne out in 2011 when they gave supporters a roller coaster ride lurching from massive victories to pathetic losses from one week to another. Inconsistency in performance is not only infuriating, it's a sign that a team has some deep seated problems. When the chips were down this team awful as it was on that fateful day in July last year when it meekly succumbed to the eventual premiers Geelong without so much of a whimper to Geelong at Skilled Park or Simmonds Stadium (whatever they’re calling it these days – we all know where it is).

Several months down the track and the entire group is well aware that this performance needs to be erased from the memory banks and that it can only be atoned for on the field by a major improvement in standard and endeavour right across the ground. Many of us thought we were getting there when the team beat Collingwood in NAB Cup Week 2 despite it being a pre season game against a weakened Magpie line up. But it took less than a week for that to unravel with a weak effort against Hawthorn and then again a week later in Adelaide.

The excuse that these aberrations occurred in Mickey Mouse matches played in March was proffered but only partly accepted. The fact is that Melbourne has not finished higher than 12th since 2006 and the team building excuse is wearing off. What is needed are some visible signs of progress and Saturday can't come soon enough.

So what will we be looking to see with the Demons?

The way is see it, Melbourne looks the better side on paper in most of the positions around the ground but the big question mark is how will its revamped midfield perform? What can it do against an up and coming Brisbane group that includes the likes of Rich, Rockliff, Redden and the irrepressible Simon Black. Melbourne has a good array of hard workers who have been winning the contested ball but falling down with the (in)efficiency of their disposal and some poor decision-making. Neeld has worked them hard in the off season and there's more grunt there so if his team can win in this department and get the ball to Clark and co on the forward line, I expect the Dees will get off to a good start.

Melbourne by 33 points.

Wow...very surprised that we've got the better record since 2000...considering the Lions' glory years. Probably one of the only teams we've got the upper hand on since then.

The lions have been slightly worse than us over the last few years GTG

Yes, but in 7 of the 12 seasons since 2000 they have finished above us. I was surprised that we have been better head to head since 2000.

You are right but for whatever reason we have been able to handle them after their glory days had passed.

Don't know what to expect from our first game and I feel somewhat flat about it. Last year round one was the only game of the season where we played out four quarters and it left me overinflated with false encouragement. Whatever the result I'll feel It won't prove anything yet. I wished we got our first game at Etihad or some other black hole instead with one of those sides that just pump us as a matter of routine.

Very true, especially at the G. I loved the Round 14, 2008 game (when we won by a point), as well as Round 5 in 2010 (Ruining their perfect start to the season with a dominant performance). Hopefully there will be positive signs that come out of this weekend.

Not sure what you had for lunch Jackie but I cannot work out what you are trying to tell us.

Perhaps it is what I did not have!

I am just worried round one will be a unique event like last season. I wish we were given a real tough game instead of mild opposition at home.

We only played the Lions once a year from 2001 to 2007 . The record was 5 - 2 in their favour . All the games were at the Gabba and I think all or most were our "home" games ! We've won 4 of our last 5 encounters against them .

By the way , we beat them at the Gabba in 2002 . Neitz bagged 7 . Ward got 4 .

Cheers

We've been given tough round 1 games every year in my recent memory. Each year, with the exception of last year, we've been thrashed. I really think we're a chance to break out of our round 1 slump this weekend.

I remember that game fondly. I watched most of it in the sports department at Myer.

Interesting to note all of the tipsters from The Age, except for Rohan Connolly (and the Village Idiot), have tipped us. I have a feeling that this game will be much closer than a lot of Demons fans might like, though all things considered I think we should win it.

We're going to thump them and will be sitting pretty at the top of the table at the end of Round 1.

So you think we'll have a percentage over 270% (which is what Sydney has right now)? I'm not that bullish. But I'm never too shy to make a bold yet uneducated prediction. Melbourne 82 d Brisbane 65, which would be a percentage of 126%.

Petterd didn't train with the main squad yesterday, therefore, must be doubtful. With the amount of injuries we currently have, I think it will be very close- Dees by 11 points but I hope it is 110 points.

Go Dees.

Without this meaning to sound cold, with the 'Big Jim factor' put aside we should just win!

We finished higher than them last year, whe SHOULD be much further advanced than them, we managed to snare one of their best in Mitch, and we have finally got the profecional footy department we all wanted.

But like alot of you i know to well the dramas we have had in getting seasons off to a winning start.

That said we should just win and for some strange reason im confident we will.

Go DEES!

Nothing like some optimism. Perhaps you should just wish for the end of the world while you're at it. If nothing else be happy that footy is back. Geez, lighten up.

Believe it or not I am worried about the 29 degrees predicted. That will help them enormously.

Providing it's under 86% humidity, the 29 degrees shouldn't favour them.

Very excited, but nervious and not that confident.

Watts must play. I know Neeld may well be trying to send a strong message to him to attack the ball or play for Casey, in the long run leaving him out may well pay dividends, but it could also backfire. We are a much weaker team without him. Even when he plays badly he takes the #1 or #2 defender and sets up many goals often through cleaver tap ons and blocks, when he plays well he can be a match winner (v Richmond last year). His form midseason last year was excellent. He dropped off with the team in the last 8 weeks.

He is almost 21, he showed the desire at Casey last week and I would much prefer he given the opportunity to show us this desire in round 1.

Brisbane just moved their best defender up forward, because he played well against Carlton in the NAB. With all due respect considering the state of Carlton's back line at the moment I don't see that as a great achievement, They also seem to be focussed on shutting down Mitch Clark. Should give our other forwards a chance to sneak a few in.

Would i be correct in saying we have to wait until 6.30 for the teams this year due to an agreement the AFL made with 7? Very very annoying.

I expect the aggression/toughness of Mitch and Magner to inspire the rest of the team. Here's hoping

Jack Watts will play when the coach is ready to back his attitude...if that is saturday, great..But if Jack needs a few more at Casey, that is what should happen...No Easy Games for Anyone..From now on....
