Gawn was not expected to play much senior footy if at all but a combination of injuries to other ruckmen and his own  outstanding form at Casey saw him play four AFL games this year.

Another pre season and some hard work in the gym and on the track could see him rise to regular status at the top level.

Games MFC 2011 4 MFC Total 4 Goals MFC 2011 1 MFC Total 1

Games CSFC 2011  13 Goals CSFC 2011 4

For a man of his size and youth, and the circumstances of his forced debut, Gawnius Maximus I thought had a great first taste in the big time.

I have little doubt that in a couple of years he will be a dominant force.

Love this guy too. Moves exceptionally well for a guy his size and his second efforts are great. Ahead of schedule at this stage.

Highly overrated. One tackle and one goalsquare mark is all I've seen from him. Is not "destined" to be a star, as many posters on this site seem to believe. This is not to say he sucks, by any stretch.

Not sure about highly overrated but I do agree that the fawning over Gawn by many posters is way over the top at this stage.

Has attributes and obvious size advantage but still has a long way to go. Needs another 40 - 50 games (mostly at Casey) to really learn his trade.

I think the fawning comes from the fact this fine young fella is 19 and 206cm and at that age the fans are not thinking of what they can do, but what they might do.

He won't play regularly for a few years yet, probably the same amount of time Jamar has left...

I hope we can keep him because he could be a Sandilands like weapon when he is 22/23.

Circumstances dictated that Big Max got some senior experience ahead of when most of us expected, and imo he showed in those few games that he has the makings of a top flight ruckman. Fawning (?) maybe, but I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of his tap-work, his mobility, his second efforts, and in particular, his general football nouse. For someone who was recruited as a 'project' ruckman he is well ahead of schedule, and imo you can't ask more than that. I look forward to his continued development over the next few years with a fair bit of excitement. A real positive for me is that Maxy got through the season without significant knee problems. What he now needs most is lots of game time, which I expect to be mostly at Casey in 2012 and probably even 2013.

He's probably my favourite player. But more for his golfing prowess than anything else.

Let me guess .... just ahead of Baddeley, Allenby and Adam Scott.

Just what I was trying to express in different words.

I don't really think anyone could say that he isn't ahead of schedule, significantly so - if they see it as fawning...well, to each his own.

Well done.

Gawning or fawning ..... that is the question?

I like this one too ... http://www.twitvid.com/Y3XBJ

I challenge you to pay your moniker the respect it deserves and start talking like Yoda does. Provide some much needed comic relief to this stale place.

Use the force, you must.

I don't think I've read any "over the top" or "destined to be a star" comments on here regarding Gawn. I've either obviously missed the particular thread in question (if there is one), or comments have been mis-represented in the extreme.

I think some posters like to 'shine their own helmet' with such comments regarding other posters opinions. The use of the term "many posters" without presenting substance is none other than pi$$ weak.

The "208cm" young ruckman I think has the competitive streak in him to push ahead and become a good contributor for the Melbourne Football Club.

PS. Chook, if you've only seen one tackle and one goalsquare mark from him.......I honestly think that just about sums up your observations re: assessment.

I agree with all of that H_T. Who knows where Gawn will end up, but I'm stunned someone can NOT be excited about a 208cm bloke who doesn't move like a glacier. This is almost unprecedented at AFL level - Sandi certainly didn't move in the same manner at the same age. He only needs to develop a little bit to become an adequate AFL ruck, so if he develops a lot?

At the cricket on Friday night I was chatting with an MCG attendant; it transpires that she went to school with him and said he is a fantastic fella.

It was a funny comment and yes he is a funny bloke who is going through a trying period for a pro footballer.

No harm done.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
