Nathan Bock suspended for "reckless" breach of betting code

Featured Replies

2 week suspension, $10 grand fine for providing inside information to a mate that he would start a match at full forward.

AFL says it "wasn't intentional" despite the fact that someone won a motza on him kicking the first goal of the game.

Bock says it was a "careless conversation with his mate".

Soft, inconsistent response that will only encourage further incidents.

He plays for an expansion club...they won't make him miss games.

Yes if a victorian club was involved, it does make you wonder doesn't it.

insider info happens every week across the AFL in my eyes

get rid of first goal betting and this all stops

He plays for an expansion club...they won't make him miss games.

He's missing two games.

Who cares.

Horse racing is built around insider info. All this does is hurt bookmakers, since when do we care about them?

His actions had no influence on the outcome of the game, only on the bookmakers accounts.

Are the AFL ever going to reprimand bookmakers when they find out inside information and change their markets accordingly without informing punters. I doubt it.

You're kidding me. Not a GC or Bock fan in the slightest but jeez give him a break.

The man has taken absolute 100% responsibility for his actions, fully backed the AFL stance on betting and stated how much he is behind the actions they are taking. Not only did he do that he also alerted authorities the weekend that the alleged offence occured. And you think he's hard done by.

What about Maxwell who took no responsibility, got no weeks and told no-one about his indiscretions until it was bought on him.

Think he specifically needs to be commended and at least the AFL is stepping in the right direction.

Yes they did as far as scores are concerned...if he had been smarter he should have kicked a point.

Betting is a Cancer on Sport..and must be stopped.

Should have fined him $50,000 and then players would learn once and for all.

Insider trading is not allowed either.

Have you read the article WYL?

He didn't know his friend had put money on it- he simply realised the day after that something may have happened and thus informed the needed sources. Heath Shaw put a physical bet on, all Nathan has done has unfortunately mentioned he would be playing in the forward line. These days that is considered the wrong thing and a 2 match penalty was given.

You want to fine him 50,000 to make a statement. All well and good to make these huge statements but you're punishing a man's life for a slip of the tongue as opposed to a physical action he intentionally committed.

Thats a poor defence for a stupid action DL7.

After the fuss over maxwell and shaw it's indefensible.

The rules are pretty clear about these thing, the time of pleading ignorance has past.

So he says.

If this year's events have taught us anything, we should be erring on the side of skepticism when it comes to money and dodgy dealings involving players.

HSC ENGLISH EXAM:

Consistency.......AFL...........put the two in a positively orientated paragraph.

REQUIRED ANSWER : admit that it is impossible.

Does him playing in the forward line guarantee he kicks the first goal?

Thats a poor defence for a stupid action DL7.

After the fuss over maxwell and shaw it's indefensible.

The rules are pretty clear about these thing, the time of pleading ignorance has past.

what ACTION did he actually take?

the only ACTION he took was to effectively dob him and his mate in.

"An investigation found Bock broke the rules recklessly, but, importantly, he did not intend the information to be used for betting," Anderson said.

how can this be the case if he recieving a harsher penalty than the most undeserving captain in afl history? maxwell didn't miss games and the only reason i can come up with as to why would be the fact that the bet lost.

"Bock co-operated fully with investigation and the investigation team is absolutely satisfied he was honest at all times."- the same cannot be said of the 2 members of the filth brigade...this is a shocking, shocking decision which only serves to highlight a growing lack of consistancy within the afl.

Anderson said the cases were on the "same tier" but Bock's offences were worse because he told two people and one of them "was known to bet on AFL football from time to time"... 90% of people i know will have a punt "from time to time". they're not even close to being on the same tier and he certainly doesn't deserve to recieve a heavier punishment.

afl missed a chance here to give Bock a well done on his forthrightness and hoensty, what incentive is there to do the right thing now? not saying that players should be betting on themselves or encouraging people to do so, but i mean really...what did HE personally do wrong except have a casual conversation with friends and family...

EDIT- his only real mistake was to tell the authorites of a potential breach...can't see many more players coming forth if this is the treatment they recieve

not to mention a cancer on society in general.. anyone who knows someone who just hands their paycheck over every week will know what I mean

You believe all that do you??

The Group of Friends he was with all went and laid $$ on him kicking that first goal.....(I think he knew what telling these people would do) If not he is plain foolish.

The Nick Maxwell situation set the tone....and the first rule of law...."Ignorance is no excuse"

$50,000 fine would clean up betting straight away...

What you do is.....Keep your mouth closed about your game before the ball is bounced....to everyone...You are being well paid as it is.

The real culprit is Andrew Demetriou, who sets the ridiculously pro-gambling tone of the sporting organization he fronts.

I agree.

I feel sorry for Nathan but 10k is pocket money to these guys. It must be stopped dead.

Good. There goes the horse racing industry. This is far more complex issue than your one liners.

Should have fined him $50,000 and then players would learn once and for all.

Fat chance of that.

Shaw......Wallis......Bock......the list goes on.

Increasing fines will do nothing to counter player stupidity or lack of ethics.

The real culprit is Andrew Demetriou, who sets the ridiculously pro-gambling tone of the sporting organization he fronts.

The real culprits are actually elsewhere but the association of AFL with gambling odds on TV and Scoreboard is a scourge.

Bock was backed from $101 into $21. Thats a plunge in my book. His family was in court over different matters at the same time, which IMO shows It wasnt an accident. He was let off and if he had have been a Krakouer i wonder if the result may have been a fair bit different.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
