Breakfast Point - are the players paying rent there?

Featured Replies

This has been bothering me for a while. Is GWS proivding free accommodation and meals to these guys? If so, I would assume this is counted in the salary cap right?

Would be no different to players from the country or interstate comining to Melbourne and being billetted with supporters, board members, etc. so no issue. The difference with GWS is they have no supporters! I would imagine keeping players together at Breakfast Point is a strategic move to try keep them united....except I imagine most would probably vote out $cully given an opportunity!

I reckon that is different. GWS are paying for this facility and the accomm is an addtional perk for the players. Rent could be worth another $30k per year. Supporters accommodating players for free is clearly different. Why not buy them a house if this is ok?

I agree. This would clearly be a perk provided by the club and as such has to be included in their cap. The obvious thing for the club to then do is charge them a nominal rate that is far less than they would normally expect for this kind of accommodation so that they can give the appearance of being above board. Hit them up for $100/week or so to stay there and the AFL would sign off on it.

I hope our players are paying for their lunch at AAMI...

There are allowances made in the salary cap for relocation and accommodation for interstaters. I am guessing that GWS are taking advantage of those conditions. Does anyone know if they have been granted some extra concessions in this area?

$100/week wouldn't even cover Phat Phils pie sauce bill!

Any danger of a single "we hate GW$" thread instead of 500 different ones.

Is he there?

Would not think he would fit in all that well.

besides he can afford much better around Point Piper!

Breakfast point is a classic AFL Tax right off i bet. Perfect way to use up legitimate surplus each year.

You are a cynic wyl.

It is for the expansion of the game

This will mean bigger TV rights and all clubs will benefit in the long term.

Come to thing of it I am the same!

thinking of getting drafted? ^_^

Haha!! Well said OD. I am very cynical on this issue. Today's double spread in the HUN is just so much carp.

Well hopefully the Commmissioner of Taxation will look at GW$ FBT records pretty closely.....this is surely a fringe benefit, though I must say at Breakfast Creek a benefit that most would be happy without.

No doubt it is a FB, but GWS will just pay it on behalf which means the AFL really pays which means you really pay ulimately

At least Phat Phil's not staying at Breakfast Point or we'd all go bankrupt pretty quickly

Phat Phil's job is melbourne based, but I'm sure he'll visit regularly

And I doubt HWFUA will last long at Breakfast point with the plebs as it might necessitate him making friends heaven forbid

who said $30,000 extra for rent? What kind of place are you renting?

all aboard the $100 a week.... that'd be sweet.

But seriously, chuck that in as an extra for 18,19,20 year olds and its a big bonus. I wouldn't mind it myself. Rent's the worst.

Of course they arent !!!

Excuse me for being slightly off the topic.

Can anyone throw any light on the fact that GWS can ask for any kid that nominates and gets selected in the draft, to give up a dream to go to Uni.

Apparently they have told draftees that they must concentrate and train 100% on footy.

Is this the norm for all draftees or just another GWS thing?

To the contrary - I understood that the AFL, and most clubs, actively encourage if not require players to work on something other than footy....but then GW$ aren't tied by any existing AFL rules or conventions.

Yes, Steve Alesio was on SEN talking about this very topic this afternoon. Clubs take it very seriously. But GW$ are not a club are they ....
