2011 Player Review - # 19 Addam Maric

The small forward produced a couple of handy performances but generally struggled for consistency at AFL level. He did show some promising form at Casey but ended the season with an injured foot.

Maric is now of contract and has asked to be traded.

Hasn't done enough and although he's shown some nice skills and an increased workrate, he's on the block.

Needs a lot more hardness at the contest and/or explosive athelticism to make an impact at his size, I think.

But... No one else has laid claim to the small forward role at MFC, for varying reasons.

It's still up for grabs.

It's yours if you want it Addam, but that's always been the case.

Ive been bitterly dissappointed with his journey at Melbourne. Some his doing, or lack of , other is just fate. I still remember a game at Sandy where he turned Goddard ( yes the same one ) inside out and upside down despite his size and weight disadvantage. I thought gee this guys got something. I still do but I'm buggered as to know where its gone.

Sometimes things aren't meant to be I guess, more the shame.

I wish him well at his next club.

Lack of opportunity, and lack of grasp of those rare chances tells me that, once again the secret one-on-one with Neeld pending, he is very likely to be traded or if not in contract, delisted.

Yes, we do need a crumbing forward, but unless Neeld has seen of with Addam devised a scheme, something that most of us haven't seen then......bye bye.

I disagree, we lack true KPF's. The undersized guys trying to fill those roles will become the quality small types. Jurrah, Sylvia, Howe, Wonaeamirri, Green, Petterd. Although not proven yet I'm fairly confident you can add Tapscott, Trengove and Gysberts to that list.

Small forwards are supposed to have a few tricks up their sleave and be unpredictable (or atleast productive), all I've ever seen Maric do is snap kicks for goal. 15 goals from 21 games says pretty clearly what he has to offer as an AFL forward.

May just need clearer goals and better delivery .A new coach could be the answer for a lot of our guys .

Referring to any of Jurrah, Sylvia, Howe, Green or Petterd as a small forward is laughable.

Same goes for Tapscott, Trengove or Gysberts.

Medium forwards maybe, but I'm talking small crumbing forwards.

That's all Maric has a chance to ever be.

I remember when he had a 6 goal haul in one of his first VFL games. And then about a year later during a game against West Coast kicked two monsters from outside 50 on the run. Wonder where it all went wrong for him.

Scott is no dummy as coach. He no doubt has something in mind for Maric and my guess is that he will rejuvenate his career.

There were arguments to say that Addam had been afforded only limited opportunities in his first few seasons, but I don't think that was the case in 2011. He was given good opportunities to cement a place in our best 22, but failed to make anything of them. After reports of an outstanding pre-season, I had high hopes 2011 would be his 'breakout' year, but he didn't make it happen. On reflection, I just don't think he has enough tricks in his kit-bag to be the high quality crumbing small forward that we need. The best small forwards play 'instinctive' football, and I certainly don't see that in Addam. Aside from that, he's not particularly quick, his marking is only average, and his work-rate (endurance?) could be a lot better. Even his kicking, which was touted as outstanding in his junior days, has been nothing special. Too much 'vanilla' for me! I've run out of patience and hope he gets an opportunity elsewhere.

"Addam Maric to North Melbourne

Apparently the Melbourne small forward/midfielder has not only been interviewed by the Roos, but also undergone medical testing. It seems a deal is imminent."

MFC do lack a small forward option. Both Maric and Wonna have not stepped up there

Good summary DOF.

I sure hope you are right there Biffen, however I don't see that Maric will be one of them.

It's pretty fair to say that Wonna has had fair reason for not stepping up. And I am not referring so much to this season, but his constant injuries prior. And this year was an aberration due to terrible circumstances. I have no doubt that if he gets a good uninterrupted preseason into him, and can play most games next year, he will return to the Wonna we loved in 2008.

Notwithstanding his personal tragedy this year there were questions about Wonna coming into 2011. If he keen for AFL in 2012 and MFC are prepared to keep him (as a rookie) then he has to work his clacker off, drop some weight, improve his fitness and hope to hell his body stands up to it when his opportunity arises.

What a waste of the Pick 21 we used on him...

I thought he would be better, and I thought he pulled his finger out.

Maybe he did.

We will see. Just not at the Demons.

i think maric will be a servicable player at the Roos. Quite often you see players flourish at new clubs and i think he'll be decent enough for them to get a regular game at the roos

i wonder what we're trading for? Ben Mckinley perhaps?

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons have the Bye next week but then are on the road once again when they come up against the Gold Coast Suns on the Gold Coast in what could be a last ditch effort to salvage their season. Who comes in and who comes out?

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
