1987 Elimination Final Melbourne vs North Melbourne (match stats)

Was there that day and it remains one of if not the sporting highlight of my life.

After watching our team finally play in a final after seeing them miss out since the late 60's, I along with tens of thousands of other loyal Demon fans was gobsmacked about how we absolutely smashed a team that had done the same to our team for many years.  Euphoric isn't a strong enough word to describe how we Melbourne supporters felt that day.

The main reason I opened up a new topic was to emphasise how young and inexperienced our team was that day and that the impossible is possible if you want it badly enough - and that youth is not always a barrier

Average games per player around about 46! Northey in charge and Robbie kicked 5 - unforgettable! ... Demons 22.26.158 North 5.10.40

If the link doesn't work just google up "afl tables" and you'll be able to find the game in the stats.rugbyleague website . Or some kind soul may be able to post the link .

2011 is done with - bring on 2012 !

Yeah great feeling in 87 I was 23 & always laughed at by friends etc about melb growing up watching them get flogged & not playing finals. It was like a rebirth of a footy club with supporters so exited & so much passion/belief in the players. We could have gone all the way except for that last game with Hawthorn.............

I was 28 and also remember the jibes - interesting that Clarko and Demetriou played for North that day - Stynes had played 11 games , Viney 14 , Warren Dean 17 , Ricky Jackson 14 , Spalding 22 , Wight 30 and Brett Lovett 22 . The numbers are so low it doesn't seem right - but it is !

And Rhino Richards was our 2nd most experienced player with 81 games played ! Augurs well for next year hey with our young list ! GO DEMONS !

I was there as a 15 year old. Great memory.

I was 3 years old... I couldn't make it to the game. I wish I could have seen the great flower play.

Oh what a day. Traveled down with a bus load of Demon fans. Joked about what if we win told not to expect to much. Walked around to the rooms which were thown open by Northey. Could not believe we were allowed in before the game. When back to my seat and was asked what the smile was wall about. Made the statement just been in the rooms we are going to win by 100 points. You could just feel it.

Robbie was taken off by Northey with 10 minutes to go to save him for next week. He received the greatest cheer for an individual as he ran off that I have ever heard.

Repleced by the inimitable Rhino Richards - who got a few kicks as well I remember.

This is all possible again

I was there. Great day. Smacked the Swans the following week from memory.

Only 1 player with more than 81 games. Makes a joke of people saying we have to build our list over 4-5 years.

It was the most surreal month of my life...

The complete euphoria after beating the doggies to get into to the finals. Hugging randoms in the street ( I could get locked up for that now)

I still have distinct memories of the pre-game and how I was like a sausage on hot plate.

I remember the Tony Campbell was a virtual unknown and did well up forward

I remember the Swans games the week after and feeling a little smug watching Gerard Healy walking dejectedly off the ground for the Swans and thinking " glad you left for greater success"

I remember the week after ( Prelim final vs Hawks) and sitting speechless in the stands for about 30 minutes after game - not moving - not speaking. Shattered.

I prefer the 3 previous weeks

Oh that doggies game driving down the road to melbourne listening to the footy and the crosses from Geelong, how did i make it to Melbourne that day.

I remember standing around listening to the final moments of the Geelong/Hawthorn game and the euphoria when reality hit home that we were going to be a part of the finals action after all those years. The train trip home to Clayton with fellow Demon supporters was full of the same words being repeated over and over again... "We're in the finals. We're in the finals."

Bliss!

I know i have the video of this game out in the shed, but I found this:

still gives me a lift watching this game.

Geez the Old Smokers stand was a rocking that day....Todd Viney's first goal is still in my head....THAT ROAR.

I agree this team has the TALENT to play finals next year....The Mental Toughness must be nurtured, not just for one Quarter (2nd Q against Hawthorn Round 2 2011)

Gotta do it for the whole game.

Defence must become EVIL. Midfield must ATTACK

Become Fearsome Demons

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
