Vandalism; I'm in Florence at he amount of graffiti here is a joke on national treasures and anywhere there is a clear surface. Where's the art in defacing other people's property?

Both.

It depends on where the graffiti is, and the context. A simple tag or scribble is definitely vandalism, but some of the graffiti around Melbourne and LA and the rest of the world are works of art. Dynamic and inspiring. And graffiti is a part of Melbourne culture. It brings otherwise gritty and dull lane ways and empty spaces to life.

Graffiti, > Art form. As long as it's not vandalising personal property. But on the dirty back wall of a Richmond factory, or a dark laneway, fine. Creative.

Tagging, > is just rubbish, and to me is Vandalism. And destructive.

Expression can be an art form.

Historical relics in museums, or in Galleries. Are not always paintings of http://www.vangoghgallery.com/catalog/Painting/244/Irises.html

Some times they're things of war, or aggression. Or the Right Wings, Napoleon, or Hitler, or Mussolini, Bashir Assad. And people have things to say about these things they have a distaste for.

And some express it in Graffiti (Art), and some just Tag. Unfortunately

For real graffiti, some of the work people do with a few cans of paint is absolutely amazing. There are some really talented artists out there, but if you don't have permission then it's not on.

Tagging is just pathetic.

I am not a huge fan of most Graffiti, apart from Led Zepellin's seminal Double of '75...although i know many of the Artists do have Talent.

Graffiti should be shown in Galleries and not on a public Wall or shed etc...and for my eyes Graffiti is just too busy...Where do i look to get a perspective.

Kids who tag should be put in the Army...Costs a lot of coin to repaint a fence every 2 weeks.

When you get to your office on Monday morning and some idiots have scratched their graffiti on your front windows costing you $1500 to replace, or when you get to your office and they've painted crap all over the tiles on your front and you have to spend half a day cleaning it after spending money to get the proper cleaner, only to find they do it again a couple of weeks later and again and again.

When all the businesses in the area have to invest in cameras to try to prevent it; I reckon it's vandalism.

It's only art when it's done on someone else's property; isn't it?

What you describe in your post is criminal vandalism, and is nothing but destructive. There is nothing creative in what you've mentioned.

The problem is that graffiti is usually done on "someone else's" property therefore is usually vandalism. Graffiti Artist rarely graffiti their own house or their parents house.

Whilst you might admire the graffiti I bet most of the owners of the property don't.

Your casting a wide net over the whole shebang.

Years ago when on the train to the city, daily commute to the construction sites, I hated the dirty and dreary back walls of the factories, facing the rail users. When the real graffiti artists decided to cheer up these sites, I cheered inside. What a positive it was to End the filth that the factory owners had let go out of sight, out of mind for them.

And in the cultured laneways of inner Melburne. The artist Graffiti is fantastic. \]

As I said, 'Tagging' and destructive so called graffiti, is just vandalsism.

the difference I believe is in the Hearts of the Graffitiist. whether they're trying to Enhance a sight, or be purely destructive.

Thats the motto of life: Are we being creative, giving,,, constructive to our community,,, or are we being self centered and destructive, taking what we can from those about us.
