Funny thing. Waaaaaaay back when I was in high school, they made me captain of the open soccer team. I was a pretty decent player, a really hard defender who could be counted on in a pinch, and had a fair bit of respect in the team. Unfortunately, we discovered that I reacted very badly to having a formal leadership role. All of a sudden I was paying too much attention to what everyone else in the team was doing and not focusing on my own game. I couldn't get my head around the notion that 99% of the time I could trust my teammates to know their jobs and all I really needed to do during a game was keep the talk going, have the odd chat to the ref and otherwise play exactly as I had every year leading up to this one. The obvious result of this is that my form dropped off, I lost the respect of my teammates, and spent the end of the season in the B's. Not what I'd call a good result.

The point I'm making here is that some people are not cut out to be captains, however good they are as leaders. Sometimes the addition of a title makes you forget everything you did to earn it and you suddenly find your game going out the window. I think this is what's happened to Brad. It isn't a reflection on his ability as a player, and I don't think he is even close to finished in the game. He needs to either get his head around the role he's playing or accept that he can be a leader, and even a member of the leadership group, but the captaincy may be a little beyond him.

HAHAHAHA. Cut the crap you were captain of a soccer team yet want to make a comparision about leadership with a bloke who is a captain of an AFL side. Please make your point but to mention yourself is an embarrassment. Brad has had a bad year but there are 22 blokes who take the field each week who have been collectively terrible with the worst coach of all team. Seriously Dean Bailey has been the biggest hindrance. Worst coaching record of any coach over 80 games in the history of the afl/vfl. Melbournes last two weeks have been that embarrassing. 186 points followed by 70+, seriously. Dean Bailey need i say more

If you think our problems onfield start and end with Dean Bailey you are kidding yourself.

We have the worst set of leaders in the league.

FFS, Other that the 1st 5-6 weeks our mids have been horrible. Has anyone here played forward with bad delivery?? Before you all jump up and down yes there have been instances which are cringeworthy, they have always been in his game but just stand out alot more now that we are looking for a scapegoat.

I agree his form is all over the place but we have no idea what he is doing around the club. The way all the players seem to be sticking together he must be doing something right.

It isn't just form.

He isn't a natural leader, and I don't want him leading other natural leaders just because those other leaders are 8 years younger than him.

"General Soreness" was the official line. Saw him walking to the coaches box with Todd from the rooms at the start of the game - seemed a comfortable conversation, so didnt look like an issue between these guys.

Did he look sore?

Probably didn't help his cause that Moloney was more of a captain in 1 game than Brad has been all year.

btw - Please don't put him in the back lines, the guy goes to ground at EVERY contest. Backs need to keep their feet more than forwards do and he can't do it as one of those.

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
